finnh··on Fixing the Loading in Myst IV: Revelation
This has happened to me so many times. Especially in the distributed database I work on ... "hmm maybe I need to let the experiment run for longer, this data is noisy so it probably needs more time to show a trend line".
finnh··on Show HN: Quantus – LeetCode for Financial Modeling

finnh··on USC Student Rocket Group Shatters International Amateur Space Record
What's weird is my pediatrician here in Seattle uses kg for my ~10 year old kids' weights but inches for their heights. Why the kg? They always translate to pounds for discussion, but the record is in kg.

It was always pounds and ounces when they were babies though. Not sure when it switched to kg; probably when we switched from "baby specialist" to "standard pediatrician" so around toddler age.

finnh··on Murderbot, she wrote
A Memory Called Empire was so good! Seems like nobody has heard of it.
finnh··on Murderbot, she wrote
Definitely don't read the most recent one, Translation Space. It's some very bad "I like you but I don't know how to say it!" YA-vein tropes and the climactic scene is, essentially, people walking around a circular hallway a couple times.

It was so bad it caused me to re-read the original three, and I realized that only the first was one was any good.

Not a beaver, but close: an otter wreaked repeat havoc in the Sun Yat-sen botanical garden in Vancouver, eating many valuable koi:

finnh··on Extreme, Extreme! The literature of laughing gas. (2014)
Zappos founder Tony Hsieh was addicted to nitrous. It sounded real bad! He ended up dying in a house fire while locked in a basement, in a situation that had "bizarre suicide" written all over it.

I've certainly enjoyed a huff or two in my day, but learning someone could become dependent was news to me. And then last year a close friend had to go into residential rehab for nitrous issues. Who knew?

finnh··on Amazon Makes It Harder for Disabled Employees to Work from Home
I don't disagree about any of this, but it's also true that pill mills were a very real part of the early trajectory of the opioid crisis.

finnh··on Amazon Makes It Harder for Disabled Employees to Work from Home
Opioid epidemic disagrees that only the rich can get shady Rx written.
finnh··on Functional ultrasound through the skull
JFK's sister Rosemary was lobotomized. Because her dad was an asshole, basically.
finnh··on Functional ultrasound through the skull
love the writing in this

"In physics, there's a word for 14 orders of magnitude of attenuation. It's called zero, i.e., you will measure nothing."

Lots of great sentences in here as noted in the other comments.

finnh··on The egg or the chicken? An ancient unicellular says egg
I'm glad you couldn't tell! It's basically tongue in cheek, as the question is silly to begin with.

And of course eggs predate chicken, eggs are seriously old technology.

Back to the tongue in cheek: there is something easily tautological that chickens come from eggs. At some point a non-chicken laid an egg, and the first chicken was born from it. This is true regardless of which mutation one decides is "the" mutation that makes for the "first" chicken.

QED it's the egg

finnh··on The egg or the chicken? An ancient unicellular says egg
Also I think by definition a chicken is a bird that hatches from an egg (among other defining characteristics). So th egg must have come first, as a chicken-like creature that didn't come from an egg wouldn't be a chicken.
finnh··on Get me out of data hell
I welcome the day when the US stops devoting enormous amounts of useful real estate to bank branches. They are a sad simulacrum of actual street life, taking up tons of space to advertise a bank and contributing to high rents that preclude less-profitable small businesses. One step up from billboards.
finnh··on Touchscreens are out, and tactile controls are back
Thanks for explaining something I've never understood. I still think it is silly, tho - it makes sense only if each driver always wants vents pointing at the same place. my preferences change by season, by day, by hour, so needing to go through a screen is a time-loss and annoyance generator, not vice-versa.
finnh··on Working from home is powering productivity
I agree in that I don't think explaining a write off is a problem, per se. But I do see Amazon taking a long term view of their real estate investment and saying "OK we have it in our power to make this payoff" which dynamic is not in play with most writedowns.
finnh··on Working from home is powering productivity
I think it explains some of Amazon's choices, as they made multibillion dollar bets on office space and real estate in Seattle.
finnh··on The profit-obsessed monster destroying American emergency rooms
200 dollars for an MRI with no referring reason is inexpensive for sure. Where is that?
finnh··on Our digital lives need data centers. What goes on inside them?
From my own adventures in colocation, i came to conclude that data centers are Narnia, in the worst possible way: you enter to perform what feels like 30 minutes worth of work, and somehow 8 hours pass before you see the outside world again.

The quoted section is about net revenue, which in this article means total revenue minus the payouts to creators. In other worse, revenue minus COGS. It's a valid comparison.

finnh··on How French Drains Work
We cut a french drain into a below-grade room a few years ago. I was definitely happy to pay someone else to do it - cutting the concrete alone was a nasty piece of work and only the start of the job. Plus the unexpected footing running beneath an interior wall they had to cross below, such hard work.
