finiteseries··on DarkPattern.games: Find Healthy Mobile Games
Video games and tablets are not eroding our societies.

Children’s usage of video games and tablets is their parents job, not the national government’s.

I don’t know what country you’re in, but the thought of whoever is in control of mine “protecting” anyone from bad contents, let alone children, is enough to send chills down one’s spine.

That is a blank check on info consumption and the sheer naivety required to entertain that idea for more than a second is bewildering.

finiteseries··on The Fireless Cooker That Feeds
Everything related to heat transfer is still relevant and very, very interesting, but I love how dated the assumption of non renewable energy is now in that method of calculating thermal efficiency.

Who cares if the perfect turbine could only ever convert 59% of the wind power through it!

finiteseries··on How will Europe cope if Russia cuts off its gas?
Germany is a single country in Europe (many countries).

Nordstream 2 is a single unfinished pipeline in a network (many pipelines).

Neither were mentioned (pipeline no flow = no cut, Germany != Europe).

finiteseries··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
They’re not European though, let’s not forget the zeal of the convert.
finiteseries··on Uniqlo dangles $8.8M salaries to draw talent in Big Tech showdown
Subscriptions as a vehicle of some sort?
finiteseries··on Ask HN: Anyone making a living building desktop applications?
Sharing it here wouldn’t even qualify as an advertisement mate, feel free to throw that link in there and maybe scoop up a few more users for your troubles.
finiteseries··on Police in tiny Alabama town suck drivers into legal ‘black hole’
In a sense, but that’s more a “how” than a what.

As you’ve described re: drinking, tying it to funding is a clear, well trodden path for the feds but let’s not forget the even clearer message, motivation and inertia that was behind it in the MADD type stuff all of a few decades after the temperance movement.

What policing is, and what its standards should be was the single most divisive topic in a year we were overrun by plague though. Nationwide protests. No resolution. Every particular reform (atm, under the current systems) takes years to see through and is shackled to locality, socioeconómics, different explanations, political warfare

Very wicked problem, and that’s not even getting into anti federalism…

finiteseries··on Police in tiny Alabama town suck drivers into legal ‘black hole’
There are 18,000 different police agencies at all levels of federal, state, county, and municipal government with the bulk of the force distributed at the municipal & county levels, and essentially zero agreement on how to, or whether or not to reform any given one, what the end state should like, etc. Very, very wicked problem.
finiteseries··on Basic income would not reduce people’s willingness to work
The question is whether UBI reduces willingness to work, not whether small business owners struggling agrees with your politics, i.e. it is not “fine”.
finiteseries··on Exploiting IndexedDB API information leaks in Safari 15
I’ve come around on Figma these days honestly, but will take Paw’s quality over Postman’s funding any day.

I will say as a former Mac developer who came of age and experience during the Carbon Y2K transition days, the fact you can just expect some form of availability regardless of Linux or iOS or macOS or Chrome or Safari is a genuine fucking achievement for the human race, how far and low we’ve come.

finiteseries··on Rail Theft Soars in California
It’s 90% Chicago & LA 90% of the time, historically.

There are two ports where consumer products enter the United States from the ocean/Asia: LA, and to a much lesser degree Seattle. That’s it.

Both essentially lead directly to Chicago from the west coast, with very little inbetween.

Eg Texas freight lines are for transporting things like animal feed and crushed gravel to export terminals with little in the way of hubs. Florida isn’t significant and its port capacity is minuscule, repeat for most of the country.

Massive (unguarded) consumer products hub x population, Chicago is the only other qualifier, where rail theft is unsurprisingly also a constant issue.

finiteseries··on Exploiting IndexedDB API information leaks in Safari 15
TablePlus looks cool! Also the only one started in the last decade.

Inertia is the most powerful force in the universe, and gravity is up there as well. Adobe & Microsoft dynastyware dating back to 1990, and two also rans devoured by the web (Figma/Postman). And TablePlus which genuinely looks cool and gives just enough hope to mourn again.

finiteseries··on Exploiting IndexedDB API information leaks in Safari 15
iOS sure but native mac applications are dead, D-E-A-D, muerto, morte, morto etc on macOS and have been almost entirely ejected in favor of web based SAAS and electron apps over the past 4 years.

I genuinely can’t name a native application released for macOS built with AppKit or SwiftUI or whatever that didn’t come from Apple.

finiteseries··on PayPal faces lawsuit for freezing customer accounts and funds
Seizing funds without explanation or restitution is a well known use case for cryptocurrencies at this point.
finiteseries··on Russia says Ukraine talks hit 'dead end', Poland warns of risk of war
Mearsheimer doesn’t even recognize the sovereignty of Ukraine, it’s realist vs liberal schools of thought (with realism having been sidelined for decades in the west).

There’s a Foreign Affairs article version instead of the hour long random YouTube lecture version: https://www.mearsheimer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Why-t...

In a nutshell of what it’s like: One also hears the claim that Ukraine has the right to determine whom it wants to ally with and the Russians have no right to prevent Kiev from joining the West. This is a dangerous way for Ukraine to think about its foreign policy choices. The sad truth is that might often makes right when great-power politics are at play. Abstract rights such as self-determination are largely meaningless when powerful states get into brawls with weaker states. … Even if one rejects this analysis, however, and believes that Ukraine has the right to petition to join the EU and NATO, the fact remains that the United States and its European allies have the right to reject these requests.

Guy did argue for Ukraine to keep nukes in the 90s though, it’s just a much more mechanistic type of thinking.

finiteseries··on Ask HN: Are Microsoft development stack and Azure a dead-end career path?
The conditions that lead an organization to utilize C#, .NET, etc in the first place do.
finiteseries··on Command Line Video Player
I can’t think of a single other video player competing on macOS UX adherence over the last 20 years, source/name a couple of these many others so we can see how they died. Because it would die.

Yes, if IINA is no longer modern, it will cease being modern.

If IINA doesn’t adhere to modern macOS UX standards, but advertises that it does, there will be a compelling reason not to use it.

In general, macOS apps require constant updates every year in order to run on new versions, period. The idea that an app that competes on UX would continue implementing updates solely in the non ui realm and as a result fall out of current macOS UX practices year after year is unlikely, to say the least. It’ll just die normally.

finiteseries··on Command Line Video Player
Meaning often comes easier when sentences are finished.

IINA is born to be a modern macOS application, from its framework to the user interface. It adopts the post-Yosemite design language of macOS and keeps up the pace of new technologies like Force Touch, Touch Bar, and Picture-in-Picture.

finiteseries··on Ask HN: Why does Cloudflare/hCaptcha care so much about buses, boats and trains?
They’re implying having recorded video of a bunch of westerners on TikTok = western recognition tech.
finiteseries··on Why Not Just Nationalize Tyson Foods?
They’re talking about ownership and management, not the cogs who couldn’t give a shit either way if it’s public or private as long as they get (under) paid.
finiteseries··on Why Sneering Critics Dislike Netflix’s ‘Don’t Look Up,’ but Scientists Love It
So essentially, it’s a poorly made movie by the standards of moviedom (that makes fun of moviedom types on top of it all) but the content, message, and vibes are cutting and relatable from the view of climate scientists.
finiteseries··on Show HN: We built an app for reading articles saved for later
Impossible on iOS, no APIs available. Would need a macOS companion app and even then it probably won’t be allowed on the App Store.
finiteseries··on Show HN: We built an app for reading articles saved for later
They don’t allow it in their TOS or App Store guidelines?

Desktop Safari supports bookmark (& reading list) export via an HTML file on the off chance you’re not aware, and it isn’t banned.

finiteseries··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021?
I remember it getting “easier” once the universe & style sank in a bit after they ventured out into the desert IIRC but yeah, definitely a reread while reading type experience.

Absolutely worth it if you can stomach it though, especially the second book with the wizard students and extensive civil engineering!

finiteseries··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021?
You’ve done much better in summing them up here then I’ve ever seen elsewhere or done myself personally. Well sluiced.

Will note the writing style is almost weirder and more niche than the rigidly strange content though if that’s possible. It’s not difficult to get past and without a doubt enhances the general vibe & chewiness of it all, but man the sentence structures are just downright convoluted at times. Totally fitting.

finiteseries··on How are Rome's monuments still standing?
You’re in for a treat, it’s within a timescale of 200 years or so, but definitely. The climate, terrain, distances, ownership, and uselessness of most of the land involved really encourage preservation, albeit rotted out and rusting.
finiteseries··on Apple’s use of Swift and SwiftUI in iOS 15
Swift.org is decent, framework docs are still very bad. Bridging RN - Apple is a hell of a market at the moment though, getting the transition on your resume is worth a look.
finiteseries··on Income Inequality Is Big, Wealth Inequality Is 100 Times Bigger
Will I also find something that actually vaguely resembles a population pyramid instead of 2020’s squeezed tube of toothpaste? i.e. proportionally more 25-35 year olds & infinitely fewer 35+?

finiteseries··on Americans are rethinking where they want to live
This isn’t an article about developers, tech, or remote work.

It’s about a general trend of existing US residents across many industries relocating to the affordable, low tax, business friendly suburbs of cities where people do things besides converting funding into JSON.

finiteseries··on Number of journalists in jail reaches global high
Because most people genuinely aren’t aware of this, and labor under the impression a US citizen/journalist was randomly butchered by the powers of evil.

An immensely wealthy, heavily connected Saudi political actor got taken out by a new Saudi ruler asserting himself.

I am personally not okay with foreign nobles attempting to hide behind the same label as eg Assange, it’s fucking absurd.
