finiteseries··on Basement Fertility
If you turn labels off, and Google Earth the CA - MX - AZ border, you can spot the All-American canal diverting the Colorado river across actual Saharaesque fields of sand dunes long before you see the thin grey lines of Interstate 8 right next to it.

It feeds that large patch of green/farms/food entirely surrounded by sand, and drains north into the inland sea created by the first botched attempt at diverting in the 1900s.

That’s arguably the least important part of the state that isn’t desert (anymore), and a small scale version of what we’ve done to the Central Valley.

finiteseries··on Basement Fertility
Yes, having 4 retired grandparents and 2 retired parents supported by 1 working adult with 0 young children, at scale, is generally bad.

Worrying about the ideal balance of births : deaths, today, is like worrying about ballast in a sinking ship. Insatiable growth doesn’t exist anymore and hasn’t for some time, we’re squarely in flattening the curve territory with the fun twist that discharges take 18 years to raise.

finiteseries··on Basement Fertility
That isn’t the measure of growth people are worried about, tap Growth Rate on each of [1], [2], and [3].

Subsaharan Africa was completely bypassed by the Green Revolution and largely lacks access to basic infrastructure like eg consistent electricity (outside portable fuel powered generators) on the typical small, family, partly subsistence based farm.

It’s not a solved problem with all the geographical and political issues, but it’s quite literally the world’s last frontier for trade.

China will depopulate >50% by 2100 (conservatively) and we’re still worrying about mid 20th century concepts like carrying capacities as if we aren’t a highly advanced (and depopulating) tool making species entirely capable of creating ecosystems wholesale and affecting said capacities.

finiteseries··on Most of the world’s grain is not eaten by humans
Neither cornmeal nor cornflour are nixtamalized, but historically most consumed corn was before the inexperienced European colonizers began using it.
finiteseries··on DOE announces breakthrough in residential cold climate heat pump technology
Europe is resource poor and suffering from a dependency on Russia.

55 billion cubic meters annually were set to be added to this dependency as recently as February 21st of this year before yet another land war erupted on the continent, forcing them to suspend certification.

The pipeline is already built though.

finiteseries··on What’s Going on with Sriracha?
Fermentation and the texture of laurel leaves sadly prevents that, but it does create the exciting opportunity to simply buy/make different sauces for different flavors and moods!
finiteseries··on What’s Going on with Sriracha?
It’s actually interesting how little I’ve experienced this sort of aggressively close minded purism in cuisines that tend to use heat and/or hot sauce, to the point this comment feels genuinely “off”.

At least IME “al gusto” type takes on food are the overwhelming vibe, quite far from the ancient buffalo milk dairies producing PGI cheese or whatever.

It might honestly be difficult to stick to pure chile x vinegar x salt hot sauces in eg the Caribbean as well, everyone and their mother tends to add something special!

finiteseries··on Resident Evil Village in the browser through Stadia
It’s incredible, happy to spread the good word. Highly recommend the 3080 tier and playing with the GFN app streaming settings & any in-game visual settings as well, the default configs can be a little conservative!
finiteseries··on Resident Evil Village in the browser through Stadia
It is entirely possible to do, and even surpass the quality of a local Xbox Series X: https://youtu.be/oSMt43BOyeU

Stadia ports/limits games on top of underpowered hardware and limits the bitrate to ~44Mbit/s with a “4K” stream, ~30 with 1080p.

It was amazing 2 years ago or so, it’s quite far behind competing services like GeForce Now nowadays with double the bitrate, true 4K streaming, ray tracing, Steam/Epic support etc.

finiteseries··on Germany paying $5.5B for Intel fab
The median age in Germany is now 46 years old, ie closer to retirement than doing anything new/risky.
finiteseries··on SwiftUI in 2022
It’s the natural move, it’s just odd I’ve mostly seen adoption using web developers so far.
finiteseries··on SwiftUI in 2022
Flutter is almost exclusively used by web developers in my professional and personal experience which is odd considering the lack of JS.

The types of companies that hire iOS developers and build iOS apps also hire android developers and build android apps, again, IME.

finiteseries··on DARPA wants to combine traditional sealift and airlift
There is already a seaplane capable of efficient theater-range transport of large payloads at speeds far exceeding existing sea lift platforms?

Because this is an article about DARPA asking for a new sea plane capable of efficient theater-range transport of large payloads at speeds far exceeding existing sea lift platforms.

finiteseries··on A world grain shortage puts tens of millions at risk
I tried copy and pasting certain paragraphs from the article here, (weather/price of inputs/farmer incentives/how wheat is purchased by nations/monetary policies/etc) but there are so many compounding global issues here one might just consider rereading the article instead.

It is quite a big deal.

finiteseries··on 2022/23 worldwide grain consumption will exceed production [pdf]
Without any additional context, of course. It’s the effect on global markets x when/how they’ve been stocking on reserves that can be questioned.

Chinese food (in)security is world food (in)security.

finiteseries··on 2022/23 worldwide grain consumption will exceed production [pdf]
It’s not about exporting, China can’t feed itself. Dependency on food imports doubled within like 3-4 years recently.
finiteseries··on See's Candies is Warren Buffett’s ‘dream’ investment
For an entire book’s worth of this article, I highly recommend Lowenstein’s biography of Buffet.

Fantastic, detailed read and I had zero interest in the man beforehand.

finiteseries··on The Texas electric grid can barely keep the lights on
It’s very common throughout hot & humid climates in the US to leave the central air conditioner maintaining set temperatures all day.

How often it’s actually blowing cool dry air out of all the vents depends on the unit/weather/setting/insulation etc.

finiteseries··on Finland will seek NATO membership immediately
The Cold War involved competing blocs of military & economic peers fighting over the alignment of uninvolved nations, it isn’t just a fancy laymen word for proxy or general US - USSR remnant conflict.

This is not a world wide conflict involving superpowers with the ability to project power (hard/soft) globally, it’s at best a regional power struggle involving regional powers.

You can make a case this is the American dagger to Russia’s future aspirations beyond regional powerdom, but peers, and blocs, and cold war there is not.

finiteseries··on The ACLU Has Lost Its Way
Core:

…since Trump’s election, according to The New York Times, the organization’s annual budget has grown threefold and its lawyer staff has doubled—but only four of its attorneys specialize in free-speech issues, a number that has not changed in a decade.

Instead, the ACLU has expanded its services—and filled its coffers—as it takes partisan stances or embraces dubious causes. Meanwhile, when it comes to the red-hot culture-war issues squarely within its wheelhouse, such as the right to free, albeit hateful, speech on campus, the ACLU has stayed largely on the sidelines.

From a web POV I think, yes, but from a platform with something like AppKit it’s very, very straightforward honestly.

Note they’re explicitly encouraging the use of something like JTable/NSTableView in the cells example, the focus is on appearance/behavior customization and change propagation. And in the circles example, undo/redo is ideally provided for “free” by the environment, and with the system’s drawing frameworks & dialogs it really does make for a simple task.

If the environment lacks these basic capabilities though..

Russia is entirely incapable of projecting force that far, Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova and the Baltics are about their level.

finiteseries··on World military expenditure passes $2T for first time
I’m sorry but there is a literal land war in Europe with plenty of Ukrainians imagining a future without Russia, wishing their neighbors had made different choices, still there. Still left.

This sort of hysterical nuclear naivety denying the continued existence of conventional war is best left to the 90s frankly.

finiteseries··on Android loses 8% of its global OS market share in five years
Yes, but I don’t know what’s like without a developer account.

All extensions are distributed as native apps, usually bundled into the primary app and are (when applicable) installed into Safari when they’re installed onto the device.

There are Content Blockers, App Extensions (into/out of Safari), Web Extensions (“of” Safari), share extensions etc with different limitations and abilities that run individually within their apps and message Safari and other apps, or have rules read ahead of time by Safari with no runtime access, or run within Safari using the WebExtension API etc etc

The archetypal web browser plug-in via the WebExtension API totally exists and are convertible for the most part to Safari’s very proprietary but very user conscious ecosystem.
