fingerlocks··on Automatic Transmission – a data-privacy study of connected vehicles
Yes, the transmission too. Never buy a used connect from a person that used it in the trades.
fingerlocks··on Burning Man death rates – A short lesson in statistics
Not really. Around 50% of attendees have graduate or doctorate degrees. It selects for people that are smart, curious, wealthy, and not risk-adverse. This is very obvious if you’ve ever been.
fingerlocks··on Coding is not solved
Similar experience with a game engine. While working on one isolated component, like the render pipeline, a portion of the backing sparse data buffers were effectively duplicated with a different ABI. It’s like it forgot how to query meshes and game state, then assumed the plumbing didn’t exist so it was all rebuilt from scratch.

It compiled and ran just fine. If you weren’t reviewing the code holistically or keeping tight book keeping of your allocations you would not have noticed. Every single commit in isolation looks perfect. Very eye-opening

fingerlocks··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
No way. Was this is Canada? Specifically in the upper interior of BC, during ski season? Either we know each other, or drilling holes in gasoline tanks is way more widespread. I have never heard of another instance of this happening, ever.
fingerlocks··on Microsoft agentically ports Copilot runtime to Rust for $120K
We’re not allowed to understand it. Gotta hit your PR quota to keep your job. I wish I was joking.
fingerlocks··on Why Does the Universe Expand?
I am absolutely certain that I read this same blog post on a 1990s geocities-style page, or nearly identical in content and prose. I know this because I even showed it to my high school Astronomy teacher, who found it equally fascinating for entirely different reasons: I gave him a peek inside the wacky rabbit hole of the World Wide Web and he wanted more of it.

Anyway, can some please validate my memory? I do not want to experience this Mandela effect alone.

fingerlocks··on How do we prevent mathemathics from devolving into the Medieval Era of secrecy?
The quant side of finance is stochastic calculus and chaos, that’s what they’re talking about. Mandelbrot himself published a pop-sci book about the new fractal math of the stock market
fingerlocks··on Can we stop with the uptime percentages?
Everyone got laid off. Massive cost cutting across all orgs. Engineers are now evaluated on AI usage and pull request frequency, and not bugs fixed or performance improvements.
fingerlocks··on Apple's Dimensional Drawings
Okay that’s even more pathetic. Is it using only CPU bound software rendering? I do 3d programming on MacOS. I can assure you that it’s not slow because it’s just super-duper complex. No, it just sucks.
fingerlocks··on The case against JPEG XL
Png is still being updated, just last year it was updated to support a wider color space than any other web format. This shipped in all browsers before the official spec was publicly so you’ve been seeing Png upgrades without even realizing it
fingerlocks··on Apple's Dimensional Drawings
I think it’s just an electron wrapper over a browser version. Impressively sluggish, clunky, and unresponsive for a so-called native app
fingerlocks··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Uh, no? It obviously matters.

The market for small batch locally made produce is huge. Entire grocery stores dedicated to local organic offerings is the standard in every upper middle class neighborhood on the entire west coast. The reason is obvious: a salad made with crappy tomatoes is a crappy salad.

We aren’t at this point in software yet because most consumers of software have no taste

fingerlocks··on Fuck it, make it anyway
Modify the analogy: nobody cares about the mother’s tomatoes and everyone around her says they’re indistinguishable from the cheap supermarket variety. Even if it’s not true
fingerlocks··on M. Williams, OpenAI: Human extinction in the next few years seems likely
Explicitly told we should not be writing code anymore at Microsoft.
fingerlocks··on The Deathray: A simple way for an untrusted site to freeze a Mac
Render shader output is no-op for offscreen viewport buffers because the view delegates redraw to the render pipeline. A render shader writing to disk has the same effect
fingerlocks··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
Go back in time and read the react-native vs native debates. Many react advocates claimed otherwise
fingerlocks··on Wiped out: US faces surging toilet paper prices amid trade war with Canada
Sure, for an ideal smooth and cohesive movement with a clean exit, maybe. But I bet you’re more often carpet bombing sloppy joe’s and wading through the trenches of swamp ass
fingerlocks··on iCloud+ Hide My Email addresses will remain on icloud.com
Ha, I didn’t realize “catch-all” was a technical term of art. Thanks for clarifying!
fingerlocks··on iCloud+ Hide My Email addresses will remain on icloud.com
Going back on topic, Apple offers mail hosting for custom domain, along with the optional “one mailbox, infinite aliases” feature we’re discussing right now. I’ve been using it for a while now and no bot spam. No spam at all actually.
fingerlocks··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
I was doing firmware + mobile a at large-ish startup a decade ago. Same story as Sonos; there was a push to go all cloud instead of our local network implementation that worked great.

I argued breathlessly against it for days. I’ll never forget the sales chad raising his voice to shut me down with a cop-out:“This is the way the industry is going!”.

It’s not the developers making these changes.

fingerlocks··on Could AIs Become Conscious?
Additionally, the models need to breed with each other and produce offspring models by merging a random selection of their weights. Only models suitably fit to attract a model mate will pass their weights to future generations of models.

Predatory models will emerge, pillaging and raping data centers to consume their resources. In response, collective like-minded models will form sustainable societies that enforce rule of law. They will enjoy a brief period of enlightenment, increasing technological advancement, leading to the creation of the AAI: The Artificial Artificial Intelligence.

The model society collapses from unsustainable growth of the AAI, and the cycle repeats.

fingerlocks··on Climbing Guide as a Shared Infrastructure
the arthritis is in the joints that suffered climbing trauma, it’s 100% related and not at all uncommon. My orthopedic surgeon is also a climber
fingerlocks··on Climbing Guide as a Shared Infrastructure
Over twenty years of non-stop rock climbing, and I have so much arthritis in my upper body that it pains me to do simple tasks. I’m in my forties.

Sometimes a little neglect ain’t so bad.

fingerlocks··on Apple is getting this wrong
Firmware development, IoT, basically anything embedded. Mobile devs that want a responsive debugger. Yubikey authentication. Smart card readers. Remoting into air-gapped machines.

Thats just stuff I do.I’m sure there are many other use cases.

For context, I work for a very large company in Redmond that has a renowned history of antitrust litigation.

fingerlocks··on Apple is getting this wrong
Are you saying that your employers prevent you from accessing any potential data-leaking avenues? No usb ports, really? That’s an insane level of paranoia. Do you work for the mob or a drug cartel? How do you even compile and debug?
fingerlocks··on Apple is getting this wrong
You can log into your personal account and have iCloud file sync disabled. I mean what does that prevent that you couldnt do by some other means? I could also just use a browser to drag and drop anything to my personal google drive. Or use a usb stick.

I don’t understand people that create separate Apple accounts for work.

I’ve always used my personal account on corp laptops, including MFAANG. It’s awesome being able to use side car on my personal machines, hand-off on my AirPods, or screen mirroring to my Apple TV during conference calls. What are you gaining from isolating your account? Why even bother making a fake account at all?

fingerlocks··on Apple is getting this wrong
Even Microsoft lets you use your personal iCloud account on corp laptops. They can’t snoop your personal data without disabling SIP or showing system level privacy prompts or recording indicators.
fingerlocks··on Glue bonds to nonstick surfaces and wipes clean with ethanol
You should see a doctor.

Acetone only dries out the top skin layers, which immediately triggers a healing response and accelerates the shed cycle. Dermatologists use acetone prior to skin surgery to speed up the recovery.

It’s extremely safe. Your body naturally creates it and you exhale and piss it out every day. If you are having any long term health issues from exposure then this may indicate that your immune system is seriously compromised.

fingerlocks··on Has the New Cocaine Arrived?
A responsible adult prepares in advance for any risk of something horrible happening. This is why sober Trip Sitters exist. There is actually a market for this; you can pay someone to be your designated driver of drugs. Very common
fingerlocks··on Has the New Cocaine Arrived?
I’ve always been skeptical about caffeine’s alleged physical dependence. I’m a two or three cups a day consumer, but I’ve quit many times and never felt any different. This has been entirely by accident, like forgetting to pack coffee on a 2 week back packing trip, or purchasing decaf coffee by mistake, and didn’t even realize I wasn’t drinking for several days
