filomeno··on Solaris to Linux Migration 2017
Of course it is valuable, and being myself a Linux user, I'm glad somebody did the effort to get all those tools available for us.

However, I feel sad seeing the best tech from Sun going down the drain despite being open source.

filomeno··on Solaris to Linux Migration 2017
That's true, although he was right about the Linux counterparts. Reading this migration guide, at least to me, it seems that all Linux replacements for things like dtrace, ZFS, SMF, zones... are just subpar.
filomeno··on Age of Empires: Definitive Edition Beta
Well, they say they now love Linux, so I expect a Linux version soon
filomeno··on Qt Creator 4.3.0 released
Yes, you can have vim inside your Qt Creator text editors, and it feels like using vim in a terminal. Isn't it great?
filomeno··on Swift is like Kotlin
> Those services that were banned are either the most outrageous war propaganda outlets

That's what most totalitarian states say when they limit the access to the information.

> Imagine half of all Ukrainians communicating via a social network that is fully controlled by the enemy

Oh, yeah, I see now. You were being sarcastic, isn't it?

What does the name of an individual have to do with that of an island?

Wayland: I think it's the name of some America place. Should afghans, syrians, viets, [put whatever country the US invaded] stick to X11 because of this?

filomeno··on Intel AMT Checker for Linux
Yep, that's what I thought, too :-D

I tried to find some "Github" link in mjg59.dreamwidth.org pointing to github.com/mjg59, but I don't think there is any.

Definitely, you don't feel comfortable cloning and building a git repo to run it as root :P

filomeno··on Ubuntu, SUSE Linux, and Fedora Are All Coming to the Windows Store
Are we submitting this story every day?

filomeno··on Escalation of Privilege Advisory
From my understanding, this exploit can work regardless of the operating system. I mean, if this Intel hardware can get network packets without the operating system being aware, then not having those modules loaded won't help.
filomeno··on “Users will only be able to view patents via HTTP. HTTPS will no longer work”
Of course it is. What's the alternative? Writing all the websites, and the web servers hosting them, along with the operating systems, with hand-written assembly or something like that?
filomeno··on Mice treated with a protein from umbilical cord plasma showed improved memory
Well, this is really not news. I knew about this for the first time in a documentary called "Monkey Shines", from 1988 ;-)
filomeno··on What’s New in Bash/WSL and Windows Console
Well, I always thought Ubuntu was "Linux for human beings". It seems it's now "Bash for Windows users".

I don't think this business model will last much longer, though ;-)

filomeno··on What’s New in Bash/WSL and Windows Console
They want you not to install Linux, but keep using Windows. That way, apart from using their OS, you may end up using the rest of Microsoft software: Edge, Office, Outlook, OneDrive, etc. That wouldn't happen if you used Ubuntu.

What I don't understand is why Canonical thought that shrinking their user base would be good for their business.

filomeno··on The Document Foundation on City of Munich’s discussion on returning to Microsoft
> some documents she received wasn't readable, then they couldn't read some document she sent them...

I like that! I send you a document you can't open: your fault. You send me a document I can't open: your fault too.

filomeno··on Happy 15th Birthday .NET
I don't really care if it can or cannot be. I just said it's not, at this time. Nobody knows what will happen in 20 or 50 years. As simple as that.
filomeno··on Happy 15th Birthday .NET
No, it's not. .net is more than .net core, and it's not 100% open, nor cross-platform.
filomeno··on The JVM is not that heavy
> Microsoft seem to have learned a lot from Java in designing their new .NET Core CLR

Of course they did. It's not a secret they designed it as a Java clone when the justice ruled they couldn't embrace the original one.

However, they missed something: cross-platformness. So essentially you get a windows only Java platform. That's why not everybody finds it impressive nor are looking forward to commit to using it everywhere (they wouldn't be able, though)
