filesystem··on Amazon reports its first unprofitable year since 2014
They don't even have to remove them. Just move them to a separate marketplace under the Amazon umbrella.
filesystem··on Ice not recommended for soft tissue injury treatment (2019)
Yes this one is comically bad. The description is even worse: "Your body knows best. Avoid unnecessary passive treatments and medical investigations and let nature play its role."

So really this is preaching anti-education. Do not seek out information about your injury.

filesystem··on Number of unemployed persons per job opening
> an Uber driver working at a loss, if you count the car depreciation

I hate to nitpick but I see this sentiment word-for-word on HN way too much. Uber drivers don't actually operate at a loss unless they only Uber for a short amount of time and they total their car during that stint. They just tend to earn less profit (often way less) than they think they are earning due to the car depreciation and other factors. But a working class person cannot afford to operate "at a loss" without noticing immediately, and a $25,000 car cannot depreciate infinitely.

filesystem··on Should we let cars use the road as a projection screen?
You're absolutely in the minority here. Perhaps you have extremely above average peripheral vision.

I grew up in a rural area and still visit quite often. Deer jump out in front of cars all the time. It is physically impossible for me, any of my family members, or anyone I've ever known in this town to be able to see the deer off the side of the wooded areas without high beams on. High beams are not going away.

filesystem··on ‘Return to the office’ rhetoric needs to end
> It's all about what's knowing what's best for you.

They were implying that separating home from work is what is best for them. Some people like to work from the office - you do not need to keep pushing WFH on everyone.

filesystem··on ‘Your Map Is Wrong’
This implies that the MP3 market was already sufficiently large or saturated by the time the iPod came on the scene, which is false. The MP3 market at the time was mostly an intersection of tech-savvy individuals and musicians. Everyone else was still using portable CD players or walkmans.
filesystem··on FCC commissioner wants TikTok removed from app stores over spying concerns
TikTok is mostly adults now.
filesystem··on Tell HN: My kid's school installed spyware and I can't remove it
On the flip side of that "minors have no rights" coin you're holding up is the fact that laptop is the parent's property since they bought the laptop for the child to use. They did a factory reset and the problem software still remains. What if the parent did a factory reset to use the laptop for themselves? There is no reason for the spyware to remain in that case. It needs to be removable.
filesystem··on 38% of remote workers work from bed
People who tilt towards extrovert thrive in an environment like this.
filesystem··on A CCTV Company Is Paying Remote Workers in India to Yell at Armed Robbers
Regular alarms are typically triggered at the point of entry / forced entry, to discourage the intruders from entering the building.

Silent alarms are triggered during a hostage situation. e.g. when a cashier / bank teller / etc. is in danger because they are being threatened with a weapon. At this stage, it is not advisable to startle the robber because it may cause them to harm the hostage.

filesystem··on Hockey goalies are too big now
I was initially a fan of the elam ending, in theory. After watching the all-start game endings, I am staunchly opposed to it. The lack of a clock removes most of the tension in the end of a close game. Thinking further, it also removes the entire concept of the last shot / buzzer beater, one of the cornerstones of excitement in competitive basketball. When a shot goes up as the clock expires in a game that is within 1 or 2 points, you have the suspense and excitement of knowing that if the shooter hits that shot, his team wins. If he misses, his team loses. With the Elam ending, there is less excitement because the consequence for missing is that the game just continues & the other team now has a chance to score and possibly win.

I could be wrong, but I don't think that a professional association / publication would have access to social security numbers.

Even if the developers take the egregious step of nerfing airplane mode, you can still "opt out" by not giving the device credentials for your WiFi network.
filesystem··on Snowflake S-1
I'm not sure how the pricing compares, but there are SaaS spark cluster offerings. Databricks is probably the biggest.
filesystem··on Amazon added a non-compete after the employee entered the U.S. on an L1B visa
I saw a comment on here a couple years ago or so that referred to this practice as "Ladder Licking". Lick the steps behind you so that nobody else can climb up the same ladder that you did.
filesystem··on Show HN: Quill – Messaging for teams that focus
So it is essentially a forum / message board? All threads and replies, no "chat"?
filesystem··on China to inject $174B of liquidity on Monday as markets reopen
I believe any advantage this may have created is likely offset by China's extremely high population density compared to Western democracies.
filesystem··on The Cornell Note-Taking System
"We all learn the same" is not the correct conclusion to draw from this report. The only thing this report claims is that all existing studies about differing learning styles are flawed and therefore not reliable.

The actual conclusion, straight from the source you linked:

"But psychological research has not found that people learn differently, at least not in the ways learning-styles proponents claim."

filesystem··on Recycling Rethink: What to Do with Trash Now China Won’t Take It
Burning trash is an environmental nightmare. https://archive.epa.gov/epawaste/nonhaz/municipal/web/html/i...
filesystem··on Recycling Rethink: What to Do with Trash Now China Won’t Take It
I don't understand how that is really that easy. I personally don't know of anywhere (at least in the US) that measures the trash output of individual homes. So all existing curbside trash pickup infrastructure would need to be overhauled to implement measurement at the time of collection. Additionally, since trash pickup is handled by municipal / city governments currently, a new system needs to be put in place to provide oversight / enforcement of measurement & fees. The startup cost here would be enormous.

Also, this doesn't even take into account apartment buildings where individuals dump their trash into trash cutes / shared bins / etc. You would essentially need to retrofit every apartment building with a collection system capable of calculating individual output, or charge all residents of each building equally.

filesystem··on Office noise bothers some people more than others
Can you provide some research that backs up your claim here? Quiet, distraction-free spaces (libraries) for studying / working have been around roughly forever. Are you suggesting that these spaces provide no tangible benefit, and the millions of people who utilize quiet spaces for concentration are somehow mentally invalid?

I commend you on the achievement of reaching a state of mental nirvana that allows you to concentrate equally in chaotic and quiet environments - very impressive. I would venture to say that the vast majority of the population will never reach this state.

filesystem··on Google are removing URLs entirely from search results?
I have tried to switch to DDG as my primary a few times now. It works great for basic searches, but I still go to google when I’m troubleshooting something and need answers fast. DDG just isn’t there yet in terms of time-to-answer.
filesystem··on Apple's list of 235 apps that are incompatible with macOS Catalina
Apple is not looking at 6 year old applications and saying “It’s been long enough, time to drop support for this app”. They are looking at the 30+ year old architecture that is 32-bit x86.
filesystem··on Ford Is Fined in China
I may misunderstand what you mean. Are you saying that you believe China will stop producing inferior (made as cheap as possible) copies of desirable goods and marking the price up? Why would they stop? They have already proven that they have no interest in acting in good faith, and in the absence of morals, this practice is obviously much more profitable than innovation.

China now has all the capital & knowledge required to become the worldwide leader in innovation. However, their entire industrial culture was built to the specifications of "making cheap copies". It will be interesting to see what the side effects of those origins will be for China in the long run.

filesystem··on Chrome extension manifest v3 proposal: comment from uBlock Origin author
The Brave Ads are opt-in, disabled by default. The idea is that they will incentivize users to enabled the proprietary ad notifications by paying those users (minuscule amounts to be fair) every time they view the ad.
filesystem··on Chrome extension manifest v3 proposal: comment from uBlock Origin author
Brave is seeking to raise a traditional series A: https://www.coindesk.com/brave-browser-to-raise-over-30-mill... (ironically you'll only really find this news on cryptocurrency news sites).

I think the mindset that crypto = stay away when looking at Brave is silly. The idea is novel, they have a working product, and IMO they really aren't "locked in" to crypto. I imagine they could pretty easily transition the ad payouts, tipping, and auto-contribution features from BAT to traditional currency. Building the platform around BAT to start just allowed them to cash in on an ICO at the peak of the craze.

filesystem··on EU votes to create gigantic biometrics database
It was consensual because the populace was bred and genetically altered to conform to their roles in society. I think that is an important distinction.
filesystem··on UK government proposes fine or block if website fails to tackle “online harms”
The law is not a waste of time. The law is clearly intended to prevent disruption in the online news / publishing space to protect the big players from competition. In that sense, this law seems like it will be extremely effective.
filesystem··on Why Evernote failed to realize its potential
This is a very strange content to post on your product's blog. What marketing advantage are you seeing from your blog, which seems to only contain this takedown article of a quasi-competitor alongside mostly clickbait posts ("These 10 tips will change your life!").
