fijiaarone··on Don't believe ChatGPT – we do not offer a "phone lookup" service
Yeah only the government can do that.
fijiaarone··on MINIX from Scratch
Linux started as a terminal emulator for Minix.

I think some things were added to Jesus’s OS that He wouldn’t have approved of.
fijiaarone··on KDE and GNOME seeks $100k to turn Flathub into a Store for the Linux desktop
Gnome used to have a polished interface for editing the positioning of top bar widgets circa 2001.

Freedom bad.

Chrome doesn’t have to be a beacon of quality for Firefox to look bad in comparison.

I don’t think open source needs a walled garden, but I think people want the walls.
fijiaarone··on Andreessen Horowitz and 'zero interest rate phenomena'
If you’re the type of guy that gets money from the fed, you’re still getting it at zero percent. If not, you won’t get it on the market for twice the official 4% interest rate either.
fijiaarone··on Four ways to build web apps
He’s talking about serverless functions for a contact form.

The problem with deploying using Docker is that you no longer have any of the advantages of Docker, unless you count a Dockerfile as an advantage. But it’s really just a non-standard way to write shell scripts to configure a system.

Deploying using Docker containers means hosting multiple nested operating systems on multiple separate hardware, and then trying to coordinate them, when you most likely actually want them living on the same machine sharing the same loop back interface (like you have during development) or on the same physical or at least logical network with a hardware firewall between them. Instead, when you deploy Docker containers to the cloud, they are on different machines (often in different data centers) connected only by a VPC with only primitive software firewalling and no way to monitor the traffic.

Docker is meant to run isolated systems together, to share resources. You get none of that benefit. But the hosting provider does, at your cost.

fijiaarone··on Self hosting in 2023
But you will get banned from your isp if they find out you are self-hosting a blog and photo album shared with family and friends.
fijiaarone··on Self hosting in 2023
Once you get into dozens of pods with multiple services with complex configuration, need to reliably orchestrate the order in which those services come up and need to use shared nothing secrets, Kubernetes starts to pay off these days, thanks to the number of handy recipes and playbooks available after searching through all the spam and marketing fluff.
fijiaarone··on Self hosting in 2023
He did mention dynamic DNS, but that’s really only ok (in the US at least) if you’re willing to to be down did a few minutes every day, and as long as you get hardly any traffic. Even with your 300 (100)mbps fiber connection, you’ll only get 5-10mbps upload, and only if you have virtually no incoming traffic. It’s (barely) ok for zoom or counterstrike, but you’ll be blocked for hosting a web server. The days of being able to self host are long gone.
fijiaarone··on Rejected emoji proposals
I thought I’d never felt dumber then after seeing that list of emojis. Then I started reading the comments.
fijiaarone··on Meta’s Push to Solve the Noisy Office
They make a point of making them space wasting round, and then still call them “cubes”.
fijiaarone··on Meta’s Push to Solve the Noisy Office
First react, now cubicles.
fijiaarone··on What is ChatGPT doing and why does it work?
Which proved ChatGPT wasn’t trained on a corpus of human language, or else it would have worse grammar, more fallacies, and way less consistency.
fijiaarone··on What is ChatGPT doing and why does it work?
I like how he says “this is how ChatGPT works” and then goes on to prove that it’s impossible.

What was demonstrated is how iPhone assist works, and why everything I tap into my phone is nonsense.

fijiaarone··on The art of the shadow: How painters have gotten it wrong for centuries
And then there is Metaverse level of inaccuracy, which we haven’t seen since the Middle Ages.
fijiaarone··on <3 Deno
The whole point of deno is that you can’t use it for general scripting without jumping through a bunch of hoops and then it isn’t portable.
fijiaarone··on <3 Deno
If only handling types wasn’t so difficult and error prone. I suppose being able to manage types with human readable text files is a benefit, theoretically.
fijiaarone··on <3 Deno
When an organization tries its best to look and act like a government agency, what do you expect?
fijiaarone··on <3 Deno
Making things harder for developers “because it’s better for them” rarely works out.
fijiaarone··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
Getting killed by running into a semi because you were weaving in and out of traffic at 90 mph and ran a red light is not really the traffic’s fault.
fijiaarone··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
Most yachts have 35-75hp diesel engines.
fijiaarone··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
Taxiing at a class b airport is stressful though.

Boeing field, next to SeaTac (but not in class b airspace) was my favorite place to land, and home field for me. Not too busy, but enough real air traffic to make good practice.

My favorite times were landing shortly after the last flight of the Concord before it went to park at the flight museum and watching it taxi off the runway from overhead.

And another time being told to extend downwind and look out the window to see a Blue Angel buzz the tower.

fijiaarone··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
The main reason someone flies a small single piston airplane anymore is to work towards their commercial rating. And practice in class B airspace is an important part of that.
fijiaarone··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
Student pilots = flying multiple trips several hours almost every day, on a tie down outside.

Compared to the doctor owner pilot who flies 1 hour to get a hamburger once or twice a year, and keeps it hangared the rest of the time.

fijiaarone··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
Those swinging yokes on the Beechcraft Bonanza were way weirder than the V tail.
fijiaarone··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
Other than a slightly nicer looking dash with a digital radio, the brand new $500,000 Cessna 172, is almost exactly the same as the 1950s-1970s era models that make up the overwhelming bulk of the fleet.
