fifnir··on Why nobody ever wins the car at the mall
Because after decades of capitalists whining about the large and bloated state and trying to cut down from every possible angle, there is probably noone left to do these jobs.

This is the market sorting itself out.

>If you need to make deliveries along the whole path from NY to Chicago to Philly, the path makes sense.

Come on man seriously? No, what makes sense if you are designing this is to make one direct connection between Ny-Philly and another NY-chicago.

> On the recurrent laryngeal nerve in mammals: A direct route to the larynx already exists through the superior laryngeal nerve. A second path provides redundancy if one is damaged (e.g. by disease or developmental defect) > The nerve innervates the deep cardiac plexus at the bottom, and the esophagus and trachea on its way to the larynx. So the path needs to be run anyway, leaving little advantage to another route.

So the main route between NY and Philly will loop through Chicago. We will build a secondary direct route between NY and philly, but it'll only allow access to certain suburbs not the entire city [1].

This route will connect NY and Chicago on its way there, and NY and philly on the way back. I certainly don't see any advantage to any other route. not even if I were omnipotent and omniscient could I do that.

>during development the recurrent [....] own is better design than if it were not.

During the building of the NY-Philly-throughChicago route, we will be bringing life and jobs to the local communities, so this is of course GOOD DESIGN.

ps.

[1] According to wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superior_laryngeal_nerve "All intrinsic laryngeal muscles except the cricothyroids are innervated by the recurrent laryngeal nerve." so I don't know what you're talking about in (1)

> The counter-argument to many "design flaws" is, as a sibling comment mentioned, they may be "artifacts of the complexity of reality," [...]

I've been trying to answer to this for about 5 minutes and I don't know where to start to untangle this...

The "artifacts of the complexity of reality" is exactly science's position, you can't take that and use it as a counter argument against it. The argument is that while artifacts are to be expected with evolution, they cannot and should not be expected from an omniscient and omnipotent designer.

fifnir··on Mysterious ‘Jumping Gene’ That Appears 500k Times in Human DNA
So more or less you are hitting all the points from this bit: https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Laryngeal_nerve#But_it_is_desi...

so I'll answer from there myself:

Make no mistake, as an explanation this achieves as much as saying "because the Flying Spaghetti Monster wanted a laugh". It does leave a few curiosities about the supposed intelligence of the designer, however, which are unanswered by this non-explanation. It effectively makes the larynx an afterthought in the design process; as if it was only a by-product of the nerve's existence rather than an aim, despite communication and language being so important to humans. But the designer, given omnipotent powers to yield creatures as She sees fit, doesn't think to merely alter the branching points of the nerves instead? This is a very counter-intuitive approach design at the very least.

You are equating your kids' reaction to your code to scientists who have spent their whole life doing science on a topic.

Why does everyone have such strong opinions about biology in particular, there's never doubts about what the physicists say but everyone's an evolutionary biologists

I have a really hard time believing this 70%

I appreciate that we all live in a bit of an echo chamber since we choose our friends, but I don't know anyone who is not okay with the "two names" solution

What more could anyone else want? That they call themselves Skopje? We are the only ones to clal them that while E V E R Y O N E else just calls them "Macedonia" and wonders "what the hell is wrong with you greeks".

fifnir··on Ask HN: Is 'search' a solved problem?
I think search is not only not solved, but a failed concept overall.

It's too hard to find relevant information from the gazillions of pages based only on a few words.

I think search needs to be replaced by some kind of indexing/ontology/knowledge organization system, and then maybe only be applied in the "last mile" of a person's 'search' for relevant information

How is it entitlement?

This is an american company, so default language is in english. Which I went to the trouble of learning in order to "join the rest of the world", out of my tiny homecountry.

They have their content available in spanish as well, which is great, but I don't speak it (I do actually but I am so sick of it being forced on me)

All I want is the courtesy of letting me choose the language that I want them to talk to me with.

Imagine if someone irl would only speak to you in spanish cause you're latino-looking

fifnir··on Notorious Kindle Unlimited abuser has been booted from the bookstore
I'm sorry for the out-of-topic rant:

I got the "we care about your prinvacy" note, in spanish.

What do I have to do to convince the internet that I don't speak fucking spanish? Yes my ip is in spain because I live here.

Is it really so hard for developers in 2018 to realize that IP does not mean language preference?

<edit> And also, stop spoiling spaniards with providing everything translated, this country needs to learn some english

Hi, are you saying this with a some linguistic expertise ?

As a Greek without much background in linguistics etc I noticed a some pretty strong mistakes (to my ear) and since the original is pretty understandable to me I assume (potentially mistakenly) that the pronunciation can't have changed THAT much.

She pronounces ai as 'aee' but ai definitely an 'ɛ' sound (as in head: /hɛd/) in modern greek

She then pronounces 'meden' as mɛdɛn when it should be midɛn (η is an ee sound, at least in modern geek)

and she puts a strongish h in holos (ὅλως) which again seems like a person without any greek knowledge reading the latin alphabet version of the word and assuming how it's pronounced...

she says zɛn instead of zeen/zin

So again, as a modern greek with no particular knowledge of how ancient pronunciation worked, this was pretty bad to my ears..

If you know more than me please correct me, it would be great to know

fifnir··on Ask HN: Are you working on interesting technical problems?
Well there's some noise like in everything else in life, but I don't think there's any empty studies (okay there's even a few cases of lying which is sad beyond words but thankfully they are very few i think).

Why does this noise bother you? Besides, keep in mind that the grant-chasing doesn't happen because of greed, it happens because people want to continue doing science and that's the only way to maintain an active lab.

I could shit on the state of academic publishing for days, but at the end of the day, there is an overall positive direction in this 'academic endeavor': the creation of knowledge.

I find this direction much lighter on my consciousness than "generate value for the shareholders"

fifnir··on Ask HN: Are you working on interesting technical problems?
How about doing some academic work?

With the explosion of NGsequencing there's no shortage of data or data-magician positions, and there's many challenges with social impact

Is it that people don't second guess everything a philosopher says ?
fifnir··on The Very First Animal Appeared Amid an Explosion of DNA
I think there's a 'balancing game' between "I need my DNA to be as compact as possible" (no waste of energy, faster to duplicate, less chance for errors) and "I need space in my DNA to allow new things to evolve".

In zebrafish and mouse, the more "developmental" a gene is, the more SPACE it seems to have around it. More space means more regulation and more potential for new regulation.
