fifnir··on How Mammals Maintain Symmetry During Development
Yes it's "just releasing some chemicals", vast and complex regulatory networks of chemicals.

They then did RNAseq experiments (measures which genes are transcribed [are active]) in the two legs separately and looked for statistically significant differences (which genes are active in the injected leg but not the other one?) and found:

"enrichment of several pathways related to stress and immune responses in the left cartilage. In particular, we found several stress-related transcripts that shared a similar left–right pattern of expression within each embryo"

fifnir··on “Free College” programs vary in how they define both “free” and “college”
> In practice, lack of support means students who come from more affluent, educated backgrounds have a large advantage over first-generation college students.

I'm pretty sure poor students would prefer no support and no debt over a bit of support for huge debt.

fifnir··on Rabbit starvation
Ah thanks, I wouldn't want to inconvenience you it was just to tell her something along the lines of : "Hey did you know roe-deer would be the main source of protein for early hom(inins?)"

It's kinda sad how some not-so-old knowledge has essentially been lost already (as in, if it's ungooglable it's practically lost)..

fifnir··on Rabbit starvation
Any chance for a link? I have a friend doing research in roe deer and she might find it interesting :)

(I did try to google it but didn't manage anything)

fifnir··on Overleaf v2
I had a quick look since this would be a great time for me to jump into this; I'm starting to write my phd thesis.

Here's my problem, which from the quick look I had doesn't seem to be solved with OL2. I want to write my thesis in LaTex but the people that I need to collaborate with and ask for comments on my thesis cannot/shouldn't have to/ deal with leaving comments on the code part of LaTex (unfortunately "code" scares a lot of people). It would be much better for them to leave comments on the pdf side. Is that possible?

fifnir··on Ask HN: What buzzwords or expressions do you dislike the most?
"With Biological Ingredients"

"Organic Cotton"

fifnir··on The Nuclear Power Plant of the Future May Be Floating Near Russia
I don't think nuclear waste is as big a problem as you might think it is: https://what-if.xkcd.com/29/

And on a side note, are solar and aeolic scalable enough to support (let's say) the entire US ?

How much of the country would physically need to be covered for that? Cause I've seen claims that it's just impossible

fifnir··on Farmers in Niger are nurturing gao trees to drive environmental change in Africa

fifnir··on Farmers in Niger are nurturing gao trees to drive environmental change in Africa
Are you from the US? Let me remind you that your country (and to a lesser degree other rich countries) often intervene in these poor countries to control politics and maintain their (corrupted) interests.

https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmXoypizjW3WknFiJnKLwHCnL72vedxjQkDDP1m...

(I don't know why the exact page isn't in wikipedia anymore, but here's the same thing more or less: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_involvement_in_r... )

Do you think all these forced regimes were a force of good for the world?

Do you think they allowed for the honest and proper growth of all these countries?

Or did they cement bullshit ideologies (In my home country some people still cling on to calling any leftist opinion as "communist"), and corrupted networks of international oligarchs (much like, regrettably, Russia seems to be doing now to the US).

<edit> Oh and let's not forget the stripping and funneling of natural resources to the rich countries </edit>

Corruption is indeed a big problem in poor countries, but it has been re-enforced and maintained by international interests of rich countries again and again and again and again.

fifnir··on Periodic fasting starves cisplatin‐resistant cancers to death
Have you tried or considered a low-carb high-fat diet in the non fasting days?

Maybe keeping your insulin levels relatively low, you can reduce the effect of the insulin cycle on your appetite

fifnir··on Goodbye Python, Hello Go
Regarding multiprocessing and serializing between processes in python, and linux specifically, have you tried SharredArray?

It dumps numpy arrays in /dev/shm which can loaded by other processes by the filepath, muuuuuch nicer than passing things around

fifnir··on Why I Ripped the Same CD 300 Times
I saw an emoji-decorated reddit thread about the new release of a library I really like. I commented how maybe emojis are not appropriate for serious code releases, I was ignored.

The next release was also announced with an emoji-decorated title...

I guess I'm old already at 32

fifnir··on Behemoth, bully, thief: how the English language is taking over the planet
But at least english pays proper tribute to the languages it took from (at with greek that I'm personally familiar) by adopting specific spellings.

Words spelled with "ph" for the f sound are spelled like that because they are derived by greek words. In latin languages elephant is spelled like elefant, making tracing the history of the word much harder

What if writing wikipedia articles was treated like publishing on prestigious journals? (somehow)

fifnir··on The Octonion Math That Could Underpin Physics
A layman's quest to understand wtf this is...

>In mathematics, the octonions are a normed division algebra over the real numbers .

wtf is a normed division algebra??

>In mathematics, Hurwitz's theorem is a theorem [...] solving the Hurwitz problem for finite-dimensional unital real non-associative algebras endowed with a positive-definite quadratic form.

... right.

I have the same problem when I try to understand anything statistics related, I get hit by a barrage of unknown words and my brain just melts.

Is there any place that explains mathematical concepts in ... different ways?

fifnir··on Scientist Loses Award After Acceptance Presentation Full of Racy Photos
I can only find a re-hash/copy-pasta of the story on google and the slides are nowhere to be seen.

Isn't it reasonable to expect from journalists to try and get the pertinent thing of this story rather than repeating a "they said/ he said" story ?

Either the guy is a creep or they massively overreacted , or somewhere in the middle, but how are we to make an informed opinion of we can't see the actual thing ?

fifnir··on Ask HN: Researchers: What practical research hasn't been commercialized?

fifnir··on Why Gov.uk content should be published in HTML and not PDF
Publishing shouldn't be about displaying nicely in screen though but rather about sharing the information.

As a bioinformatician, big tables inside pdfs are essentially useless. What's the point of a few hundred rows worth of a table if you can't manipulate it with whatever tool you prefer?

Moreover, I'm writing my thesis and dealing with many pdfs from the 90s in most of which I can't just highlight and copy text so I need to type it out like a savage. Is it guaranteed that today's pdfs will be easy to handle for future people?

In my opinion publishing should be done in plain text and .tsv files and the onus of displaying it on screen should fall on the editor (isn't that their job anyway ??)
