fgonzag··on Windows Subsystem for Linux GUI
I was also amazed with WSL, it genuinely made me think I didn't have to leave Windows anymore. It is honestly one of the best products Microsoft has launched recently. The development tools division of Microsoft is on fire and should be commended.

The Windows division is another story though. With all the Windows 11 news I decided to give desktop Linux a spin for the nth time in 20 years. Installed Manjaro and I'm extremely impressed. Even though I have Nvidia graphics everything is buttery smooth, all my productivity tools are there, setting up my VPN was far easier than Windows, and even more amazingly most of my games work well thanks to the recent push by Valve and the steam deck.

I will probably stick with it this time, so maybe for me 2021 finally is the year of the Linux desktop.

fgonzag··on The IDE for Professional Data Scientists
It is. At least in mine (on Linux)
fgonzag··on New York Times’ Wirecutter Product-Review Site Moves Behind Paywall
TBH,I rather have a paid consumer review site than a free one. A free one is not trustworthy by definition, they'll be looking to make money off sponsorships and advertising, which IMO is directly at odds with the service being provided.
fgonzag··on Affinity 1.10
Seriously, I'd drop $100 for the effort without promises or guarantees. Just because I feel their software is amazing value and I'd love to have it on Linux.
fgonzag··on HalloApp: A private ad-free social network by ex-WhatsApp engineers
But how is the app supposed to search for contacts on the app without access? I don't see contact access as unreasonable for a messaging application.
fgonzag··on The case for banning non-competes
> If that gets refused, I instead add a clause that says any period where the non-compete is enforced will be paid at my full salary.

I believe employment NCs should be illegal, but this is the minimum standard a non compete should require to be legal. The fact that companies can essentially force you to stop working for years, without paying, is ridiculous in my opinion.

fgonzag··on Firefox 90
Were you around during the IE and ActiveX days? Because that's what happens when a single vendor gets to dictate web standards.
fgonzag··on Non Session Manager vs New Session Manager
He literally stated where you can find the information.
fgonzag··on Ohio GOP ends attempt to ban municipal broadband after protest from residents
This is the correct idea. It maximizes competition while minimizing barrier to entry. Micro IPSs become extremely affordable, and all you have to do is have each ISP pay a set fee for each customer for line maintenance and expansion.
fgonzag··on AMD Quietly Launches Recycled Xbox Series X APU as 4700S Desktop Kit
Also while we're wishing, a sub $100 modern GPU that can drive multiple 4k monitors, gaming performance be damned.

Considering the fact that most of AMD's CPUs do not include an iGPU, I don't really get why they haven't launched something like that for the workstation market.

fgonzag··on As the Pandemic Recedes, Millions of Workers Are Saying 'I Quit'
That's what I'm working towards. Build enough of a nest so that I can spend the rest of my life just contributing to open source software / passion projects.

I'm hoping I'm done by my early 40s (mid thirties ATM). I have a target amount that should afford me a relatively well off life just off interest. The moment I hit that number I'm stepping off the treadmill.

fgonzag··on Antiviral effect of high-dose ivermectin in adults with Covid-19
It's widely available as a generic drug, so no pharma company is going to conduct a large sample clinical study, which costs 10s or 100s of millions. It would have to be a publicly funded clinical trial, of which I haven't really heard of.
fgonzag··on AMD vs. Intel CPU Market Share
Server replacement rate is actually fairly high in the industry (5 years at most and usually less than 4 for tech oriented companies last time I read an industry report). The main problem is you can't buy AMD based servers. They are completely unavailable, even to hyperscalers judging from the graphs. The only reason Intel is keeping the lead is because they can actually fulfill the demand.
fgonzag··on Software maker Altium rejects $3.9B takeover bid from Autodesk
I second affinity. As someone who often resorted to pirated Photoshop because of it's very infrequent use, the first time I saw that affinity got all of the PS and Illustrator features I use for $50 combined I jumped on it. I couldn't be happier with my decision.
fgonzag··on Password Managers
I'm using it right now on Android. Works fine.
fgonzag··on .NET Open Source: What Happens When the Free Lunch Ends?
The idea was to have a virtual machine based language like java was. Originally, it was not cross platform. Today it is. I know I'm not going to convince you to give a try but C# is a very neat and capable language, and the CLR is a blazingly fast runtime.
fgonzag··on Argentina bans beef exports for 30 days in effort to reduce domestic prices
I can't fathom the mental gymnastics needed to enact this type of regulation.

You are essentially stopping the flow of foreign capital into the country on an economy with extreme inflation and unemployment rate.

People don't need beef. Trying to make an easily substituted luxury good affordable that is bringing a significant portion of all foreign capital into the country seems short sighted, to say the least.

fgonzag··on Instagram ads Facebook won't show you
Though you can't have text in the image, you could put the target filters as the post's text and use the image to grab the attention.
fgonzag··on Instagram ads Facebook won't show you
You don't need a business account but you do need a personal account (or rather a personal account can be a business acct).

The targeting is relatively specific. Think of a (general) category and it'll be available. I use it for bars and restaurants at a local level, and the granularity is quite nice vs other media (target people who like bars or restaurants, are into music, are into drinks, are into cocktails, are into concerts currently in the city or who are traveling to this city)

It really helps a small budget go a long a way, assuming the stats they give are correct.

fgonzag··on Subsidiary of Toyota to acquire Lyft’s self-driving car division
Are you in the freight industry? Because drivers are exactly what is expensive and limits growth right now. there is a humongous supply of trucking jobs, and they are paying really high rates right now (up to 70-80 cents per mile)
fgonzag··on Tesla's Autopilot 'tricked' to operate without driver
Ever heard of cruise control?
fgonzag··on Jaguar Land Rover to suspend output due to chip shortage
That's backwards. It would had prevented the shortage.

The shortage is happening because manufacturers cancelled their chip orders from their suppliers because of reduced sales forecasts due to COVID.

When the manufacturers cancelled their orders from their suppliers, the supplies cancelled the orders from the foundries, which cancelled their slots and gave them to consumer electronics which had increased demand.

When sales of new cars rose, manufacturers called their suppliers for more parts, which called the foundries to increase production only to find out their previous slots had been sold.

fgonzag··on Out of thin air: the mystery of the man who fell from the sky
Terminal velocity is reached relatively quickly, in about 7 seconds IRC. You hit the ground at the same speed falling from a not so tall sky scraper as you do from the plane.

Surviving the impact is more about position, which material you are smashing into, and if you hit any objects right before hitting the ground in order to break your fall.

fgonzag··on WhatsApp CEO on the controversy surrounding proposed German communications laws
We can only see the profile photo, which we obviously couldn't match in our worldwide facial recognition platform which automatically tags every picture of yours.
fgonzag··on Can’t use iCloud with “true” as the last name
You only need to run into one to make someone's life a PITA. Treat names as free strings, because there are a lot of names that do not conform to any notion of western normality.
fgonzag··on Clearing price for supplying power to Texas grid –$31.65
The system is complex because Texas designed it that way. This is in no way a technical problem, is it a political problem.

Just because something is complex, it doesn't mean there is no one with the required expertise. Texas chose Ayn Rand levels of deregulation with its energy market, and it will keep struggling with black swan events since those are the types which the private industry tends to chronically underinvest for, since they are the easiest to cut and turn into profit.

fgonzag··on Texas Bans Firms from Taking Natural Gas Out of State
Deregulation? It's a state owned electrical monopoly, could you explain why you think the Mexican energy market is deregulated?
fgonzag··on No Qualified Immunity for Cops Who Made Stuff Up to Justify Phone Seizure
If you force officers to carry malpractice insurance, the city only pays the base premium for a spotless record to the officers (collectively negotiated by the union most likely), anything extra is supposed to come out of their pockets. The insurance would probably disqualify gross negligence too, so police officers as a whole would have to be a lot more careful.

It is far from an ideal solution but it should help start getting the ball rolling towards a more professional and transparent police force.

fgonzag··on Terraria on Stadia cancelled after developer's Google account gets locked
I completely agree.

And if companies don't want to do it, that should be easy to regulate though. Requiring a human centric appeal process even if it has a fee, and prohibiting blanket account bans (if you get banned on gmail it doesn't affect your android and play store accounts, for example)

There are other provisions that I consider important like not being able to reuse email addresses and requiring the forwarding of email for at least 6 months after any account termination (getting banned from your email address can have disastrous consequences)

fgonzag··on Google has been testing a replacement for third-party cookies
Of course Google does not think its customers are sheep. Google thinks its users are sheep. Chrome users are not the customers.
