fffrantz··on EasyOS kirkstone 2.0 release – lightweight Linux from the guy behind Puppy Linux
Apparently, it requires a 64-bit CPU but I wonder if really early 64-bit CPUs (e.g. 1st gen Intel Core) would work. x64 has evolved quite dramatically since its inception.
fffrantz··on Hermes: An open-source document management system
We're using it at $Work and search is an absolute nightmare. I can never find what I want with it.

SharePoint had better search than Nuxeo, for instance.

fffrantz··on Transformer stockpiles and power grids come under threat
This would not solve the issue and might even worsen it.

HVDC converter stations are absolutely massive and necessary to interconnect the HVDC line with the rest of the AC grid, making them larger targets than even the largest autotransformers (i.e. 750kV to 330kV like they seem to have in Ukraine).

fffrantz··on Transformer stockpiles and power grids come under threat
Just to give more context, transformers can be enormous (as high as a 3 storey building, weighing hundreds of tons when loaded with all their necessary oil) and as such, their shipping is an endeavor in itself.

The TSO I work at has started to switch to in-place building, where all the components are shipped to the final destination and the transformer is assembled directly in the substation.

Also, lead times are apparently really long since everything is custom made.

fffrantz··on Ask HN: Anyone using proprietary Unix at work?
Yep, still running Solaris 11 on a Sun server for SDH/SONET network management. I mean it fits the bill, since both technologies are now ancient.

I can't say bad things about the whole Sun/Solaris combo though. It's rock solid and requires practically no maintenance whatsoever.

Also, since it's completely off the internet, it's not like it could be compromised in any way.

fffrantz··on Ask HN: What is your go to idiot-filter question in interviews?
Funnily enough, coming from a telecommunications background, a semaphore will always make me think about Claude Chappe and his optical telegraph [1].

fffrantz··on Feds Seize One of the Largest Sites for Pirated Books and Articles, Z-Library
Well that's a shame. I buy a lot of paper books because I love the physical aspect of it but I can't be bothered to bring them along when travelling, especially large ones.

I usually just grab a digital copy off of z-library to put on my e-reader and that works wonders. The nice part about "pirating" books also comes from the removal of DRM, which are a pain to deal with when your e-reader doesn't have internet access.

I would be all out to buy from a store that gives you both format (paper and digital) but unfortunately that's still kinda rare.

fffrantz··on Tim Cook Shoots Down Idea of iOS Adopting RCS Messages
Well I'm sure the EU will be delighted to hear this.

As explained here [0], it will soon be mandatory for all large messaging apps to interoperable - as part of the DMA (Digital Market Act). As to how that will be done technically, nobody knows, but RCS is definitely a standard that could be used.

fffrantz··on Ask HN: Should I be panicking about jobs in Europe?
It's not only the energy crisis, it's the whole economic downturn that's hitting every sector that we should be worrying about. Energy is just a mean to an end, and it affects most European industries, making everything more expensive. We should all be prepared for a rough 12-18 months, as we've only seen the tip of the iceberg so far.
fffrantz··on Show HN: MiniMail – Disposable Email Service for Everyone
Duckduckgo [0] as well.

fffrantz··on SnappyMail – Modern, lightweight and fast web-based email client
I've been a Snappymail user for a bit. UI is definitely needing some work, but performance is great, setup is easy, and it runs on docker flawlessly. Honestly, for the quick webmail needs, it's perfect. If you want something with more features, there's always SoGO or horde.
fffrantz··on Using SNI proxying and IPv6 to share port 443 between webapps
Honestly, reverse proxying anything with Caddy has been so easy that I can’t use anything else anymore. Docker containers are utterly easy to proxy, the defaults (e.g. the php_fastcgi directive) are sane and mostly work out of the box, the documentation is great, and everything seems so well thought out that one has to wonder why we put up so long with the convolutions of Apache and Nginx.
fffrantz··on Open RAN Explained
RAN has been a stronghold of the telecom vendors forever. It’s been their bread and butter with no interoperability between manufacturers whatsoever. Openness is definitely a step in the right direction.
fffrantz··on The Pfizer vaccine will be officially called Comirnaty, for some reason
Well it’s been its name forever. My vaccine certificate from July doesn’t even mention Pfizer.
fffrantz··on Nvidia Shield TV Owners Are Pissed About the Banner Ads in Android TV
No need to sideload anything. Just remove all updates of the Android TV launcher in the settings and disable auto updates. You'll get the good ol' launcher.
fffrantz··on Windows 11, Amazon, and Uncomfortable Questions
While this is indeed worrisome, I’m not really sure Microsoft is any better than Amazon from a pure end-user point of view.

Microsoft has been a telemetry champion and has been collecting troves of personal data through Windows 10, all the while making it almost impossible for the average user to disable it (and re-enabling it with every major update).

So if Microsoft goes the same route as Amazon (resigning every app), it’s just a matter of choice between a rock and a hard place. On the other hand, even if they allow for the app developer to keep its signature, Microsoft is still probably very capable of gathering data and telemetry through their Android implementation.

Either way, and until it becomes illegal to collect data without explicit consent, I’m pretty sure we’re screwed…

fffrantz··on Maddy: Composable all-in-one mail server
I’ve been using YunoHost (https://yunohost.org/) for my VPS setup for years, including emails, and the setup is such a breeze. It takes care of everything from certs to spam detection, includes IMAP, and you can even choose you webmail interface. Maddy sure looks like a great alternative if you just want/need emails.

Edit : typo

fffrantz··on Rotting food, dead animals and chaos at postal facilities amid cutbacks
This should be a reminder that mail, while on the decline for two decades, still is an important component of our day to day lives, and that we still heavily rely on its on-time delivery and reliability. I do not want to get political, but it seems impossible to me that mail would be entirely handled by the private sector. Mail, like many utilities such as public transport or water treatment, is rarely profitable with a low-enough cost to make it affordable for everyone. It really breaks my heart to know that people may not have had enough food on their table because their paycheck or allowance was delayed in the mail.
fffrantz··on Antarctic Snow Cruiser
Horsepower are only one of the measurements for an engine. These engines have enormous amount of torque which is more important than sheer horsepower.
fffrantz··on WireGuard is in net-next
Great news. They've been hard at work for a while and it's finally come to fruition. Congrats
fffrantz··on Google suspends some business with Huawei
If this also revokes the GMS agreements, it will have a much larger impact than the updates part. A whole lot of things on Android are dependant on the GMS, such as push notifications for certain apps, cloud storage of user data, and a lot more. Let's see where the it all ends up, but this may turn to be an enormous crippling move for Android on Huawei/Honor devices.
fffrantz··on Which programming language is used for making Windows 10?
Second this. Though Microsoft has been really busy getting their C++ sorted out lately. Funnily enough, C# performance has also seen some dramatic performance increase.
fffrantz··on Paris's Rue Cremieux Has an Instagram Problem
Instagram also changes/destroy the landscape, as explained here : https://youtu.be/Itjc14Fm-gs It's incredible what people would do for likes...
fffrantz··on PHP code generated by GPT-2
"Accidentally picked up" Somehow they must have fed it with some JavaScript and some php, right ?
fffrantz··on Linux 5.0-rc1
Still regular work for me, this thing just refuses to die
fffrantz··on Ask HN: What linux desktop tools/apps boosted your productivity?
Alpine is absolutely amazing for managing the hundreds of emails I get everyday. Also, workrave helped with concentration by forcing me to do regular pauses.
fffrantz··on Bringing the Android kernel back to the mainline
That's exactly it. And even keeping to the preferred/qualified vendor list provided by the SoC vendor does not guarantee that the drivers will be in the mainline... Android's use of the kernel really is fundamentally broken
fffrantz··on Bringing the Android kernel back to the mainline
Honestly, it's extremely difficult to update the kernel since it's usually tied to the BSP the SoC vendor is providing. Also, you gotta keep in mind the difficulties associated with the lazy 3rd parties providing drivers for a single kernel version, making updates almost impossible. -- Disclosure : I work for an OEM as a system architect, and it's been one of my goals to try and get newer kernel versions running. (Suffice to say I failed so far)
fffrantz··on Raspberry Pi Model 3A+
Agreed. Ethernet is just more convenient and there's always the possibility to add a USB WiFi stick
