fezz··on How Secure Channels Attempted to Intimidate a Critic and Failed Spectacularly
It seemed like a good way to frame her but incompetence is a more likely reason.
fezz··on Ask HN: Are 4K monitors worth it?
Very much so if the monitor is larger than 36" and not too large. 60Hz is a must have.
fezz··on McLaren F1 Tech Applied to Other Industries
Seemingly a puff piece on McLaren...
fezz··on Why It's Safe for Founders to Be Nice
It's all to easy for nice founders to turn into full blown sociopaths. Maintaining empathy, integrity, and balance takes alot of work once things grow (or fail).
fezz··on Ashley Madison founder steps down
Dating sites like OkCupid, Match, and Tinder (yes, it's used for dating alot) have a decent balance.

Yoga, Tennis, Beach Volleyball all have a high percentage of women. And whole foods...

fezz··on Multiscale Gigapixel Camera
The quality seems to be way less than a gigapixel. It would be interesting to see a corresponding dslr gigapixel image.

The ball optic is very interesting though.

fezz··on Saving 25,000 Manuals
Old manuals are also great for showing prior art agains patent trolls.
fezz··on Capitalists, Arise: We Need to Deal With Income Inequality
It also created a larger market for hugely expensive cars and other luxury items. The 1970's had a 70% tax for the richest. In 1982, that dropped to 50% and coincidently was when the boom in excess really got started.
fezz··on Samsung unveils 2.5-inch 16TB SSD
LTO-7 is 6.4TB uncompressed. LTO-10 is 48TB.

Hopefully we'll see LTO-7 this year but probably in 2016. That puts the diff between LTO6 and LTO7 at 4 years.

Extrapolating... LTO8 in 2020 LTO9 in 2024 LTO10 in 2028

LTO-10 would have ideally come in 2020 in keeping with LTO's earlier pace of 2 years per revision which is also more in line with storage increases

fezz··on Indian immigrants are tech's new titans
This is something more common to 1st generation immigrants. Although often true for 1st gen immigrants from India...

The driving factors for taking a big risk and ditching the expected norms are similar to taking risks and rebelling. Couple that with a strong emphasis on success and business and you have something that works well in the tech industry.

fezz··on When running for exercise was for weirdos
The Tarahumara indian long distance runners ran for communication and also had a tradition of running for ceremonial and competitive aspects.
fezz··on Skipping breakfast might help you lose weight
Also look at a caloric intake / use over a larger moving window. The notion that our body functions on a daily unit of time is artificial. If you look at a larger window, managing a diet becomes easier.
fezz··on The pressure to achieve academically is a crime against learning
Learning, understanding & doing: real value for self Testing: external value for others

The latter is useless in both the real world and for the student. Tests/grades aren't the only way to show progress.

(disclaimer: dad homeschooling a kid)

fezz··on When running for exercise was for weirdos
I run barefoot all the time on the beach, at the water line when the tide is lower so it's nice and flat and you can see surface well.

I have no problems with my shins and knees since I'm running mostly mid to slightly forefoot strikes. The forefoot absorbs the shock rather than pounding the knee and hip with a direct impact. When I run with shoes on pavement, I get some knee and hip issues, especially if I don't pay attention to my foot strikes with respect to changing pavement.

fezz··on When running for exercise was for weirdos
No mention of native americans, south americans, africans, etc that were all running for a long time...
fezz··on Thunderbolt 3 Overview [pdf]
TB3 being tied into USB-C means more possibilities on the consumer side if they price it right.

TB1/2 were weak in many respects but pricing and adoption were the main ones.

fezz··on Thunderbolt 3 Overview [pdf]
The new xeon for laptops will have TB3.
fezz··on Classical music generation with recurrent neural networks
Oddly enough it has the characteristics of bad jazz, like prono music but classical.
fezz··on TrueCrypt 'decrypted' by FBI to nail doc-stealing sysadmin?
Question: how likely is it that they could reverse out a segment (using a known stolen file) that matches a section in the truecrypt image by brute force?

fezz··on Eating Spicy Food Linked to a Longer Life
If I go too hot or if I'm making a really hot hot sauce, I'll go for citrus. The acid counters down the oils and help faster. In the sauce, it balances things. Same for pineapple.
fezz··on Eating Spicy Food Linked to a Longer Life
The spicier the food, the more water you drink (maybe).

There's also the link to certain spices (like chili peppers) that are highly anti-inflammatory.

Personally, the more spicy food I eat, the more I have dessert.

fezz··on Tinder and the Dawn of the “Dating Apocalypse”
"The next best thing"

You're either someone's option right now until the next better option comes along or you yourself are doing that to someone else.

Tinder amplifies being "next best". You're never "the best" option and the best option for you becomes elusive.

It's the uncanny valley of dating.

fezz··on The Hacker News New Page Scroll of Death and Some Possible Solutions
I would just fold it it without putting it into a new box. It'll be more organic that way and you'd be able to tell if it's new by upvotes anyway.

fezz··on How I Gave Up Alternating Current
Agreed on the shifting the consumption down the line. However, the primary energy advantage of Uber-like car services is that it reduces the high cost of energy to produce a car by reducing the pool of cars through optimizing their use (meaning, instead of a majority of cars sitting around doing nothing, using a pool of cars working most of the time would mean fewer cars needed overall). If all cars end up being full time service vehicles (through self driving?), one car would hopefully be able to service 20 people and replace all those cars. If the carbon foot print of gas/electric consumption is 12% of a car's total (the rest going to manufacture), then moving to a full shared service model would be a huge gain (and loss of the auto industry)
fezz··on How I Gave Up Alternating Current
And in the big picture, the clothes have to get washed again so he's simply shifting the energy consumption onto the next users.
