fezz··on Netflix’s Media Production Suite
When Data/File based workflows started in movies (around 2004), 2-3 copies was the standard from the get go and ideally this was with MD5 checksums (currently xxhash is more common because it's alot faster). LTO backups are also generally part of the copy chains as the 3rd or 4th copy. Before that, duplication with tape was while recording wasn't as common, but it was more common to duplicate after recording. Although you'd have some amount of generation loss depending on the format, not so with recording to multiple decks with the same source video. With film it obviously wasn't possible but original negative (o-neg) was much more cautiously handled. You'd have copies made going to an interpositive for editing and dailies process. Those wouldn't an identical quality so to get a negative copy, you'd be 2 generations of loss. By the time you're seeing a print in a theater, it would be 3 generations. (one->IP->IN->print)

fezz··on Why the U.S. Patent System is SCAM [video]
The corruption runs deeper than you'd ever think. A multi-billion dollar industry you've never heard of. This is the world Patent Trolls thrive in: created for them by the U.S. Patent system.
fezz··on What's wrong with 3D printing? (and why we acquired Micronics)
The Micronics printer looked very promising. Seems like a good fit with Formlabs.

fezz··on The Psychedelic Inspiration for Hypercard
"I thought if we could encourage sharing of ideas between different areas of knowledge, perhaps more of the bigger picture would emerge, and eventually more wisdom might develop. Sort of a trickle-up theory of information leading to knowledge leading to wisdom.

This was the underlying inspiration for HyperCard..."

fezz··on Time to Get Serious about Tick-Borne Diseases
Diet can play a big factor in autoimmune disorders. proteins leaking from the gut into the bloodstream can trigger a strong immune system reaction which makes the autoimmune disorder flare up.

“Son, you got to know vi just enough so you don’t look stupid.”

Put that on a t-shirt.

fezz··on Olive: Professional open-source non-linear video editor
Editing film was very much non-linear editing to being with. The transition to tape based editing meant that you were limited to managed edits from source decks to a destination tape deck.
fezz··on A completely rebuilt, digitally-enabled Polaroid SX-70 camera
Sticking with just restoring original components isn't necessarily the most interesting result. I like that a different path was taken.

fezz··on What’s the real reason Costco employees check receipts at the exit?
They have detectives (sometimes ex-cops) roaming the store to spot shoplifting, tag swapping, etc.
fezz··on “Stress Hormone” Cortisol Linked to Early Toll on Thinking Ability
I've had my cortisol tested quite a bit (I had a pituitary tumor. Most recently they tested with a salivary cortisol test which is supposedly good now. Previously they'd do a 24hr urine test for the best results. That's in addition to a blood test for cortisol.
fezz··on Looking Glass – A new type of holographic interface
Looks like a lenticular display with some filtering and refraction to expand the perceived focal plane outwards.

It also looks like it works best with a black background.

Depends alot on the codec too. Light weight codecs like Tico/jpeg-xs and some jpeg implementations can use very little ram (~12 rows worth). Others need alot more for rate control, motion estimation, etc.

fezz··on How many photos/videos a day do mobile users capture?
More specifically would be the storage/bandwidth needed for the average mobile user to move their photos/videos to the cloud.

One statistic I found was 150 photos/month. For videos, I've not found anything yet but 10 mins/mo is a rough guestimate. Might be totally wrong...
