feverishaaron··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2015)
mPath - http://mpath.com/careers - Palo Alto / Some Remote

mPath is a new type of productivity app for businesses. Most people don't need all of their business data on their phone – just the pieces that matter to them. With mPath, regular folks can modify the app for their needs (without coding). All of this takes between a few minutes and a few hours. We connect to existing data sources like Salesforce and Box.

Right now, we have a small but talented team. We're looking for a few more people:

1. iOS Engineer - Swift/iOS 8+/MVVM pattern

2. Startup CTO - full stack engineering leader

3. QA Automation Lead - build a testing program

4. Devops Engineer - Docker, AWS

5. Web Services Engineer - Dropwizard, Phoenix

feverishaaron··on Slack Raises $160M Series E at $2.8B Valuation
Ah, but it searches inside files and any connected system as well. So If I search for "Arc Code:500" it will show me any chats, any github pull requests and any Google docs that mention that phrase.
feverishaaron··on Slack Raises $160M Series E at $2.8B Valuation
For those that are confused about the value of Slack – It's not just about text chat. It's about comprehensive search and combatting organizational forgetfulness and knowledge drain. If we put it on Slack, it's archived "forever" and a team member a few years from now can start with a Slack search before re-inventing the wheel.

This is especially evident with the integrations. If just the relevant slice of data is fed into Slack, it's easier to digest than running a full report in another tool. And it's now part of the corporate history. So finding patterns of endemic problems becomes much easier.

feverishaaron··on Hey startup parasites: We don't have time for you
Worse, if you do present, you'll find that the "angels" who are members of these groups are often wealthy professionals with no startup or technical background (lawyers, doctors, ranchers etc).

They're often tire-kickers who will waste a lot of your time doing "diligence" and trying to negotiate absurd notes with excessive warrant gearing/premiums. As you talk with them, you'll come to find they have never put in more than $50K and have only done one or two investments.

feverishaaron··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2015)
mPath | Palo Alto | Remote possible | RESTful APIs, Sinatra, react.js, Swift, J2Objc, iOS, Android, Dropwizard, Haskell etc.

mPath is building a platform that allows regular folks to assemble native mobile apps via a drag and drop interface. We have our own data platform, but we connect to others, like Salesforce and Box.com. We're focusing on internal productivity apps for the enterprise right now.

We have a strong engineering, design and security focus.

Opportunities include:

Startup CTO (full stack experience; more doing than managing)

Web UI Engineer (Sinatra / React)

iOS Engineer (Swift, j2Objc)

Android Engineer (Java, j2Objc)

Devops (Docker / Jenkins / AWS)

Automation / QA Engineer

feverishaaron··on Meerkat is dying
I suspect Periscope's meteoric rise has to do more with being prominently featured in the "Best New Apps" section since day one. It was well after Meerkat reached peak-blogger that it appeared in that section, and even so, I don't believe it was in the #1 slot.
feverishaaron··on Stop Using LinkedIn
This reads like an Anonymous diatribe. Clear language will yield better results.
feverishaaron··on The Fatal Pinch
It was an experienced salesperson who saw an open market, paired with a repeat startup CTO.

They did their research and validated the market by finding prospective customers before raising. Which is a good model to remove risk from any venture – especially one that would take many years to build.

feverishaaron··on The Fatal Pinch
I know of a company that thought they would be in this category. They ended up raising a very large seed round (1MM+) from a VC and pre-negotiating a follow-on of equal size, should they need it. That way the expectation was set from the beginning that this company might take some time to build out their product and see traction.

It's smart, because the discount for the follow-on was pre-negotiated, so investors get perhaps a more favorable discount if the company is a run-away success, and the entrepreneurs were able to buy peace of mind, and could count on the money regardless of macro-economic forces.

mPATH - Palo Alto, San Francisco, Remote - http://mpath.com/careers.php

We're building a new way for business users to assemble 100% native mobile apps, and instantly deploy them to 1000s of their colleagues. You can build an app in about a half hour, and have people using it minutes later.

Think of it as XCode without the code.

We're in need of iOS Developers, QA Engineers and DevOps.

Stack: Everytime we consider a new feature, we try to choose the right tool for the right job. So far, most of our stack is written using Objective-C, Dropwizard, Sinatra and React.js

mPATH (http://mpath.com/careers.php) | Palo Alto | Remote Possible

mPATH makes it easy for regular people to assemble and deploy mobile apps to their colleagues. We're focused on making enterprise data accessible while on the road.

We have an immediate need for a Sr. iOS Engineer/Team Lead.

feverishaaron··on Ask HN: Big company approached our stealth startup – what to do?
Excellent advice. We lost a lot of time "working with" a large company, including building a detailed demo using part of their platform – and it ended up coming to nothing.

- Sr. iOS UI Engineer

We're building a platform that allows anyone to assemble native iOS apps. We have a small, smart team who's moving quickly to get our product in the hands of beta customers.

You'll have the opportunity to influence the direction of the product, and work on very complex engineering challenges.

======== Why mPATH? ========

I'll tell you why I work here: The founding team is amazing. Both Claus and Trae have deep enteprise experience, and an intense desire to bring a game-changing platform to the market. We've been lucky to hire some super-talented engineers and designers. Thus, our team is a great group of people to work with. It's small right now, so we're being highly selective about the people we are bringing on board.

This company is going to go places. This is my third startup, and I've never seen so much interest in a pre-launch company. Every time we demo to customers, potential partners and investors, they are amazed.

Our seed investor, Randall Kaplan (co-founder of Akamai), is also very well-connected in the enterprise market.

What is the tone of the show? Is it focused more around the deal flow aspect of the startup ecosystem, or are you going to field more general, "art of the startup" questions?
feverishaaron··on Facebook's Method for Hiring Designers
Facebook is missing something here that's key. There are a lot of "yet to be great" designers out there who aren't working to their full potential due to their employment circumstances.

I've found absolutely fantastic designers who are struggling through go-nowhere jobs in the depths of enterprise companies that don't care about design, design agencies that are structured like puppy mills, and the like. When finally given the opportunity to build their vision, they excel.

The designers who have "designed apps you admire" are just the obvious, low-hanging fruit.

Sr. iOS Engineer (full stack, but UI focused)

Sr. DevOps Engineer

Web App/UI Engineer (React.js and Sinatra, modern browsers only)

Sr. Software Engineer (Java, service architecture/generalist)

feverishaaron··on Amazon Fire TV
It would be a gateway console for little kids who want to play Angry Birds (which is basically all my 6 year old wants to do).
feverishaaron··on What every founder should know about designers
By portfolio, I mean a fancy, well-manicured site that shows static mocks. I'd rather see a real product. Coincidentally, the two people I've given offers to in the past month were the only two we interviewed who didn't have portfolio sites.
feverishaaron··on What every founder should know about designers
Much of this advice is terrible for a startup.

A client-services model isn't a good fit for a startup, due to the iterative nature of a product in search of a business model. The entire article implies a waterfall approach where a designer goes into a cave, does some work and presents it for "review".

Instead, a good "startup designer" will be an empathetic generalist (UI/IA/Front-end) with good market sense. It's important that they're comfortable skipping a lot of "design process" and rapidly iterating with engineering (their "familiarity with flat design" notwithstanding).

Also, many great designers don't have portfolios. That's because they're busy doing real work. Ask to see real work.

Despite the linked article, if you're early stage you should go unicorn hunting. It's critical to hire from the A-list for the inaugural team.

feverishaaron··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2014)
mPATH in Palo Alto or San Francisco. We're building something that hasn't been done before. This well-funded seed stage startup was started in August by two C-level Salesforce execs. Our CTO comes from Square, where he lead platform engineering.

We have an immense amount of customer traction for a stealth startup. We're looking for Ruby or Python web app engineers, product designers, Java-based service layer engineering, iOS and Android engineers.
