fellellor··on President Putin has announced a partial mobilization in Russia
Bullshit. I’ve no interest or opinion on whether Trump is good for America or whatever. But he will go in harder against Russia. He was the one who warned the Germans about their increasing fuel dependency on the Russians in the first place.

As if Pakistan is waiting for the global etiquette on the usage of nuclear weapons to change so they can nuke India!!

Both countries can’t use nukes because the other has them too. India has a fast growing economy at stake and Pakistan may be an economic disaster but Pakistani elites have huge assets in the west which can be frozen.

Usage of nukes in the Indian subcontinent has easily calculable first order effects.

In Ukraine it’s entirely different. It is ridiculous to suggest that the US will welcome the destruction of the entire human race if Putin even nukes civilian centres in Ukraine. They won’t. But there are second and third order consequences of such actions which are not in favour of Russia and certainly not in favour of Putin and his friends.

No it doesn’t. It seems Putin wants to conquer Ukraine and more importantly for the west to get over it. They certainly won’t if he nukes Kiev or does some such stupid shit.

The new Cold War will be sealed and it will be game over for his regime. He wants western apathy and social disorder to continue. And he wants a disaster zone in Ukraine as his personal entry point into Europe proper.

I hope, for the sake of the rest of humanity, all Euros (including Russians) aren’t a bunch of incredulously racist man-children as you are.

Reading this would have been funnier had it not been for the behaviour we’ve seen this year.

Pattern matching is helpful but requires you to duplicate parts of the type’s specification quite often if not always.
fellellor··on Joy of Elixir (2020)
This example is not so difficult to understand.

The important thing to realise is that the dot operator is used to access functions grouped into modules (or even invoke anonymous functions) rather than invoke methods on an object. Because Elixir being a functional language, the central operation is invoking functions on data and passing the results to other functions, rather than calling methods on objects.

From this understanding you can just grok from the code that this is a program that takes a list of numbers and squares them concurrently, in the process using your computer’s parallel processing hardware. And as this is a high level language you can create concurrent workloads with minimal implementation knowledge.

Even if you come from C family of languages where the & denotes something to do with address, you’ll realise the way Elixir uses it is not far away from that, but without the added tediousness of memory management. So elixir builds upon common conventions.

Some things like Enum may confuse a Java programmer. It’s Elixir speak for enumerable data rather than a collection of constants. And of course the pipe operator is different.

It’s certainly not easy to see this and write your own code and offer suggestions. But for a mildly experienced programmer who has already adopted the mindset that code is just a bunch of instructions presented in non-linear fashion, like in a legal document, this is an approachable intro to start asking questions from. First of all one should be willing to read a couple of pages from some book on what are anonymous functions and what is the syntax like for that etc.

The task is a bit more difficult for people who tend to look at code with a more inflexible viewpoint ie junior developers.

Same goes for JavaScript. The first version is nowhere close to the beautiful, expressive and powerful masterpiece that we have today.

fellellor··on Covid “Fudge Factor” – A map of Covid data corruption and approach that worked
India has seen some huge high profile protests against the government. The government of India could not deal with these protests and had to back down and reverse their decisions. The reality is that because of various known reasons and observations we can conclude that the Indian government is weak and can’t push back on widely held public opinions.

So it is interesting that not one big popular protest happened because 5 million or more people died because of either covid, or covid containment related reasons like the decline of the economy or unavailable of other services like surgeries. Not only this, in the many important elections that have been held in India, compensation for covid related losses is not a major election issue in any one of those.

So in my opinion, this article‘s conclusion on India is hilariously off the mark. Even most of the liberal media in India which is opposed to Modi and his government and sends people out into the countryside for investigation has said that though there is evidence of economic destruction because of the lockdown and fear there is no evidence of large scale death.

Some BJP supporters will look at articles like these and claim that this is all a vast conspiracy to defame Modi and India. I don’t put much value in such claims. I think the conclusions are because of bad application of statistical reasoning. One size fits all application of some statistical tool on a global scale clearly shows the writer’s lack of understanding and their immaturity. Whatever figures they are using are clearly missing context specific to each country and this makes these results useless.

A common Muslim like yourself might say these actions are barbaric and not representative of your religion. But Islam isn’t having a reputation of being wholly arbitrary. A vast majority of Islamic scholars will and have justified the injunctions against Rushdie or any blasphemer.

And fundamentalism is a misnomer when it comes to Islam because any deviation from fundamentals is violently opposed. It’s a religion that never moved away from fundamentals. It has never had any reform that secularised and drew power away from the clergy.

You are probably a good, kind person but when this happens to Rushdie or any blasphemer it represents exactly what unreformed Islam is.

This is a blanket ban of multiple countries. It's most likely something very unspecific and probably unrelated to local regulation situation. Also fanbyte seems to be an influencer marketing platform. If they wont serve influencers in these countries anyway, it makes sense for them to block all users from there to stop messing up their metrics or targeting or whatever.

This isn't really much value to most people. If you ask me the less influencer crap that exists in this world, the better.

What is slavery if not systematically, grossly under compensating someone for their work? Modern industrialised economies have plenty of tools to simulate the effects of slavery. Although without the fun stuff like whipping and other forms of gratuitous cruelty.

In its essence slavery is an exchange of labor deal where the buying party has it way better than the selling party.

OPs fact checking gives you a good idea of the kind of “fact checking” the person in the center of this story (Zubair) used to do as well.

They hate the ruling party, who to be honest are amoral assholes like most Indian politicians and bureaucrats, so facts don’t really matter to them.

Calling TCS a sweatshop is pretty crazy. There are office politics you will run into if you are a high performer, or even working hard to rise through the ranks. Other than that it's a pretty chill place. Your mind will eventually rot with no relevant work experience though. So definitely not 996, but not a great place either.

Anyway the amount of generalisation in both the question and your quite incorrect answer is pretty funny.

fellellor··on How do poor countries get rich?
One of the reasons for small land holdings in India are succession laws in Independent India. The entire holding doesn’t go to the eldest male/child, rather it’s often divided among siblings. The division leads to all kinds of violence and shrinking holdings over generations.

Also the most profitable farms aren’t the largest ones, which are often dedicated to growing common grain like wheat and rice, and sugarcane. These crops would be bought by the government at prefixed prices. And the assured income again leads to a lot of fighting and influence mongering, and ironically much smaller takes for the average competing farmer.

Quite unexpectedly, the highest profits are made by farmers who manage to get smart financing and grow niche crops like fruits, some vegetables, flowers, organic, cash crops etc. The highes profits in India are always made by people who carefully avoid government and activist attention, assistance, benevolence, interference.
