feider··on Replika app is Russian spyware (in Finnish)
I don’t think so. Sure, there has been rumours but this story delivers solid proof for the first time. Also this has not got any real media coverage.
feider··on Replika app is Russian spyware (in Finnish)
A finnish journalist uncovers that Replika AI assistant is made by company of Russian emigrant who has close ties to Putin. The company is a front that appears as US entity, but is actually operated from Moscow.
feider··on Mickey, Disney, and the public domain: A 95-year love triangle
You don’t seem to be bothered by the ramifications of this. Really short sighted thinking.
feider··on What is 5D chess?
What is your opinion on how into the chess one needs to be to get a similar kind of experience out of the 5D chess? Asking as a casual hobby player.
feider··on Which epidemiologist do you believe?
Regarding point 2 - it is more likely that mutations would actually cause sars-cov-2 to be less pathogenic. Futher if you judge merits of approach solely by looking at death counts you miss the bigger picture: what is the total cost of the approach when you include economy and other indirect impacts, eg. mental issues caused by more severe isolation.
feider··on Practical Typography
Funny that even if this site does typography well, it miserably fails in accessibility as parts of text have way too low contrast against background. Still great content and I will definitely dig in.
feider··on Show HN: A Set of Dice That Follows the Gambler's Fallacy
Thinking fast & slow by D.Kahneman mentioned this same story
feider··on Ask HN: How to become a vegan?
I'm genuinely interested in this topic. I'm not saying that vegan diet is the best diet out there, but what I've read so far it really seems to be a much healthier alternative than the "western default".

Some interesting studies about vegan diet and it's impact on health:

http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/89/5/1627S.full http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1038/oby.2007.270/full http://www.bmj.com/content/293/6560/1468 http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/1097-0142(1989080...

All these studies contain findings that support the idea of vegan diet being one of the healthiest option: vegans tend to have lower BMI, blood pressure and reduced (prostate) cancer rate.

feider··on Ask HN: How to become a vegan?
Thanks for the tip! Looks just like a thing I need atm.

Wtf. 1st in the HN? Is this a joke I don't get?

feider··on Penny Auctions
I would argue that it depends on how predictable the output is for a given system that determines if it is a gamble or not. A simple rule system with numerous agents can produce output that is really hard to predict.
feider··on Why We Moved from Amazon Web Services to Google Cloud Platform
It's ridiculous to blame agile for "delivering shit" (I'm not a huge agile fan neither) - after all it always comes down to the people involved not the methodology/process applied.

A though experiment: do you blame democracy, because Trump is now a nominee? If you have lousy people, choice of process does not really matter.

feider··on Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn for $26B
", this is a great purchase."

You cant really say it's a great purchase without mentioning the price, which you didn't. I haven't done any deep analysis but my gut feeling says that 26.2B for stopping Linkedin spam is not worth it.

feider··on Hints of an unexpected new particle could be confirmed within days
"New particle is not included in the Standard Model--because there hasn't been any experimental evidence for one.."

What?! That statement is absurd - reminds me the story of how geocentric model was "adjusted" when new measurements came along. That just leads to overfitting a model. The property of a sound theory is that it can predict future data; it does not just rationalize on data already acquired.

feider··on Google Is Closing Google Compare, Its Financial Services Comparison Service
I hope Google encourages spin-offs to be launched from these closing services. Haven't used Google Compare as it's not available in my region, but it seems like a solid concept.
feider··on Gravitational waves detected by LIGO
Thanks, that pretty much explained what I was after.
feider··on Gravitational waves detected by LIGO
"This is why it’s been crucial to have two similar detectors separated by nearly 2,000 miles - one in Washington State, the other in Louisiana - and to seek events that show up in both detectors, thereby ruling out effects caused by local seismic events, passing trucks, and so forth."

Sounds like a good old survival bias ;) Seriously though, what is confidence interval in LIGO?

feider··on The Rent-Seeking Is Too Damn High
"Planning on building anything innovative around a .au domain registration"

Can anyone give an example involving innovation around specific domain registration?

feider··on Emacs vs. WebStorm for Node.js Development
Well, it is just slow: bigger the code base / longer it runs, the more clearer this becomes. I used Atom for ~6 months, until I had enough and switched to sublimetext about 4 months ago.
feider··on Emacs vs. WebStorm for Node.js Development
Sure, but the right metric with emacs is how feasible something is, not whether it's possible.
feider··on Emacs vs. WebStorm for Node.js Development
Using Atom is just pure pain, though the pain goes away fast once you stop using it.
feider··on Emacs vs. WebStorm for Node.js Development
You are not alone. (I hope this knowledge soothes your pain)
feider··on How Mickey Mouse Evades the Public Domain
" to reach these people and to convince them to vote for your candidate, you have to spend tons of money"

I recall reading from freakonomics that (according to them) inverse is actually true: candidates do not do better because they have bigger budgets, but they're likely to receive more financial support if they are more likely to get elected. Truth probably lies somewhere in between, but stating that "democracy is fundamentally broken" is just too naive.

feider··on How and Why I Taught My Toddler to Read (2010)
Yes, this touches the point that is overlooked. We are eager to assume that the cost of acquiring a (reading) skill is static and low, involving only time. The way I see this is that for toddlers the added value by hour declines rapidly, so instead of investing more time to teach my child to read properly, I prefer to teach/explore other things such as story telling, cutting shapes with scissors, etc.
feider··on How and Why I Taught My Toddler to Read (2010)
Really, more skills the better? I have 3yr old son and I've been reading to him / teaching him to read only as much as he can concentrate while enjoying it. It is really easy to be too pushy and have a child lost interest. The skills does not matter nearly as much as the learning experiences. I rather hope that he grows an interest in learning itself than teach him read under 4 of age and possible hating the experience.
feider··on The C standard formalized in Coq
Thank you, that paper seems to be surprisingly easy to read (being an academic paper that is).
feider··on The C standard formalized in Coq
I understood that. Sorry if my question was bit unclear. What I wanted to know was _specifically_ what these bugs are / what causes them / what is practical impact (i.e. probability of application crashing or other serious event due to use of GCC etc)
feider··on The C standard formalized in Coq
From CompCert site: "What sets CompCert C apart from any other production compiler, is that it is formally verified, using machine-assisted mathematical proofs, to be exempt from miscompilation issues."

I'm not very into C language - what are these miscompilation issues? What is the practical impact that CompCert C brings?

feider··on I Turned Off JavaScript for a Week
Why? I really don't understand how this is the solution. Ok, so a lot of sites use JS in a wrong way or too much of it, but I think the root problem cant be fixed by forcing a technology solution.
