feelix··on Scientists engineer mice genomes to lengthen their lifespans by 30 percent
What I don't understand, is that with ageing billionaires everywhere, why isn't anti-aging the most funded thing in the world? Or is it?

feelix··on The New Intel: How Nvidia Went from Powering Video Games to Revolutionizing AI
In general neural nets today are so slow (due being computational resource hungry, in clock cycles, memory, and memory bandwidth) that even 4 of the fastest GPU's money can buy stacked together still take days or weeks to train a production quality model.

Trying to peg this onto one of their CPU's will have a result much like they have had in pegging the graphics processing stuff onto their CPU's. That is, very meagre results that is fitting for only the lowest resource intensive things that a consumer may want to do.

30MB to hold a model in is almost nothing. Even 12GB is insufficient to train something like imagenet.

But in the same vein as their iGPU implementation, it may be just enough to satisfy the requirements of the average consumer, and still be able to make a large dent in Nvidia's market share.

feelix··on Why the MacBook Pro Is Limited to 16GB of RAM
So you think they should have included DDR4 RAM? (that'd be their only option to support >16GB).

DDR4 has a bunch of really huge caveats, as outlined in the article. Did you read it?

feelix··on iPhones send call history to Apple, security firm says
But does it get deleted, or marked as deleted?
feelix··on Trump, our next president, promised to block AT&T/Time Warner merger
I'm not even pro trump, it's just an observation of overt bias.
feelix··on Trump, our next president, promised to block AT&T/Time Warner merger
Anything not-pro-clinton gets downvoted without explanation on any social media platform I've seen, including HN (which is supposed to be less biased, more objective, and superior to the other networks).
feelix··on Silicon Valley Investor Peter Thiel Wins Bet on Trump
The thing that bothers me both about Brexit and Trump is that the mainstream narrative is that it's about closed borders, racism, misogyny, etc.

There is no evidence to suggest that the largest proportion of the voters for these things were motivated by that. One side loses, then they scream racist/bigot at the other side and then because it's the mainstream media those labels stick around. That does not help anyone and does indeed only widen the divide.

feelix··on Stuck between a rock and a hard placem: An explanation of Apple’s new MBP
That comes with this CPU [1] which is not appropriate for the MBP

feelix··on Google Brain's Magenta: Multi-Style Image Transfer with Code
Simply put, it's because apps like Prisma have demonstrated that there are 100's of millions of people that want this. So developers are following the market demand.
feelix··on Stuck between a rock and a hard place: Apple's new MBP
And how is their battery life?
feelix··on Return of the Mac (2005)
To add to that, the FFA caps the maximum battery size to 100 watt-hours, which is probably the main reason why it's limited to 16GB. I posted it here yesterday: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12841293
feelix··on Who's to Blame for the 16 GB RAM Limit on the New MacBook Pros: Apple or Intel?
If you RTA you'll see that it's a forced compromise between battery life and FFA restrictions
feelix··on Stuck between a rock and a hard place: Apple's new MBP
Yes, but Apple use LPDDR* ("LP" for the low power variant of RAM)
feelix··on Who's to Blame for the 16 GB RAM Limit on the New MacBook Pros: Apple or Intel?
I would say that, strangely enough, the Federal Aviation Administration is to blame for the 16GB RAM limit. I posted an explanation why here hours ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12841293
feelix··on Supercharging Style Transfer
Plug for my mostly ignored version, that runs on Mac & Windows. It processes high res images unlike Prisma, and runs entirely locally. And can process videos of arbitrary length & resolution. http://macdaddy.io/Style/
feelix··on Supercharging Style Transfer
Don't forget everyone that is not Prisma that does the same thing, sometimes better.

Here's mine. It runs on Mac & Windows, runs locally on all its styles unlike Prisma, runs HD images, and can process unlimited video: http://macdaddy.io/Style/

> 2)What about a hard boot? Is the power key now a soft key as well? Non-removable battery and a soft reboot key do not make a good mix

Are you seriously implying that you think that Apple would make a laptop whereby if it kernel panics and you need to hard reboot, now there is no way to do that because they accidentally made the power key a soft key?

(And I'll add the power key has been a soft key for some years now already)

feelix··on As Artificial Intelligence Evolves, So Does Its Criminal Potential
YC do use machine learning on applicants to predict success already. They don't listen solely to it, but they use it as one of their ranking signals to use google terms.
feelix··on Exposing high-end poker cheating devices
Not all businesses are run optimally. Some even favor short term gains over long term profit and reputation. Particularly shady casino type businesses.
feelix··on Google Has Dropped Ban on Personally Identifiable Web Tracking
I use google and have chosen to give up a lot of my privacy to use their services.

One thing I was never willing to do though, and I had an instant emotional reaction to not doing, was allowing them access to all my email.

They can have my GPS coordinates at all times, my web search history, etc, but they can't get into the inner workings of my life and my thoughts.

So back before I had any real use for it I just registered myname@myfirstandlastname.com and used that for my email address. It felt like a natural move. It does bother me still that a lot of the people I email do use gmail, so google still ends up siphoning of a lot of the contents of my email.

I see a lot of people talking about FastMail instead of GMail, but I don't know why more geeks don't register their own domain name which has several advantages (including looking better and more professional). The one downside is that mail search sucks. I'd love to get some decent search without giving up privacy somehow.

feelix··on Stephen Hawking says AI could be humanity's greatest disaster
>it's not clear to me that overall they did not create much more than they destroyed.

Can you elaborate on this? In terms of nature, what would you think humans have created more than destroyed?

feelix··on Looking to Prototype Without Wire? Introducing the Meta Board
With all of these questions and nobody understanding it, I'm starting to doubt myself.

But my impression was that it's like a digital breadboard emulator, but in hardware. So you essentially have a digitally programmable hardware breadboard. So as one example, normally if you would need a resistor in a circuit, instead of physically putting a resistor there of the correct strength, you can do so digitally, and you dont have to physically mess around with a resistor.

feelix··on Looking to Prototype Without Wire? Introducing the Meta Board
This is a good product and could be useful for a lot of people. A lot of the comments here are saying they don't understand what the product is for, but I think it should be obvious to people (like myself) who have used breadboards before in the past.

But you can't just make a good site and expect for the "if you build it they will come" theory to play out. You need press. Post it in some forums to get started. Reach out to some sites that post electronics news and reviews and ask them if you can send them a free sample. Get on Twitter. Most of your overall job may be ahead of you.

feelix··on Wikileaks: Julian Assange's internet access 'cut'
> what would undermine the credibility of an institution of journalism

You missed out the most important thing which would undermine the credibility of an institution of journalism. And it is the the most common one which is the most heavily engaged in. And that is choosing not to report certain stories and facts, even though they are of great significance.

feelix··on Show HN: Style – Similar to Prisma for Mac/Win
For anyone that has tried the previous version, the memory issue has been fixed.

This has 30 models, and they're all a lot better than the previous 8 or so it had.

Also added a camera button for quick experiments.

feelix··on Show HN: Style – Similar to Prisma for Mac/Win
No, it has been fixed

feelix··on Apple Responds to Dash Controversy
What I dont understand is that if Apple are so vigilant in removing false reviews, and if they're so sensitive to fraudulent reviews (as I wish they would be), why is it that seemingly everywhere I look it is full of them.

Take this app for example: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/disk-drill-media-recovery/id...

(click on "All versions"). You'll see there's HUNDREDS of fake reviews, all giving it 5 stars, and in all cases it is the only review that account has ever made.

feelix··on Immunotherapy cancer drug hailed as 'game changer'
Indeed the class of immunological drugs look like they could be a game changer at some point in the future.

However the question is around the use of the term for this specific drug right now.
