fcpk··on Beeg float library, a Rust port of Fabrice Bellard's libbf
uh... that title... don't search for what the hell a "Beeg" is. apparently this was just sloppy spelling for beef
fcpk··on Android Developer Verification: Threat masquerading as protection
The sad part is that this has a solution. It's called adb root. Your adb stays locked unless you unlock it, and you're not able to get root on the phone. But you can through the adb shell, meaning that when app X wants to screw your data away from you you can still copy it. There is something deeply wrong about locking filesystems even from read access. GrapheneOS should at the very least give a full read-only access to the fs through (possibly) limited adb access.

tangent question: Claude code seems to be very much loved and suggested by most major Chinese LLM using the env vars to change the server. that however means you lose a lot of anthropic tools like auto mode, running shells, monitors/crons. is there a way to get those with non anthropic plans?
fcpk··on Volkswagen blocks Home Assistant by requiring client assertion
And this is why there should be very very unpleasant for manufacturer legislation about allowing access to hardware you buy. This is a generic problem not limited to automotive industry, though they are a major offender. Locked down android auto, systems, buses, everything is proprietary and you are the whims of the manufacturers decisions

fcpk··on DynIP – Dynamic DNS with RFC 2136, IPv6, DNSSEC, and BYOD
oh absolutely, but go with the simple look. ask the LLM to make the page simple and not decorated with "material designs"
fcpk··on DynIP – Dynamic DNS with RFC 2136, IPv6, DNSSEC, and BYOD
This is great! and and amazing idea.

Just as a warning however the vibe coded website doesn't inspire confidence this isn't low quality auto generated AI slop and/or AI managed infra.

Looking into it of course this seems to not be the case, but just wanted to say, don't use generic looking theming that is default of all LLM-generating websites :)

fcpk··on A Periodic Map of Cheese
human milk is pretty delicious?
fcpk··on Claude usage limits hitting faster than expected
it's high time actual price starts to hit subscriptions rather than VC subsidized first hit is free stuff
fcpk··on Quantization from the Ground Up
that's brilliant, I wonder why we haven't seen much use of it to do very heavy quantization
fcpk··on Scientists Discover Protein That Turns Brown Fat into a Calorie-Burning Machine
quite brilliant though don't expect any easy therapies out of it yet. there is no known small fragment(ie manufacturable peptides) that bind to PLXNA1 , and the terminal fragment is about 400 amino acids, way more than what can be produced with solid peptide chemistry (100-150 amino).
fcpk··on Quantization from the Ground Up
something I have been wondering about is doing regressive layer specific quantization based on large test sets. ie reduce very specifically layers that don't improve general quality.
fcpk··on SSH has no Host header
I mean it works... but it's really ghetto. You have to handle username collisions(or enforce unique usernames). IPv4 should be non free, and that'd cover the costs...

Iran International (Persian: ایران اینترنشنال, romanized: Irān Internašnāl) is a Persian-language satellite television channel and multilingual digital news operation based in London, United Kingdom. Established in May 2017 and reportedly linked to Saudi Arabia.

from wiki

this is just a mouthpiece of the Saudis probably condoned by MI6. take it with a grain of salt.

fcpk··on Garry Tan's Claude Code Setup
and where's the result? LOC as a side a measure of success is typical for the "omg LLM are amazing and can do it all phase" but once you enter the "actually shipping products people want with human complexity and experience meltdowns" it's usually different....
fcpk··on Drosophila Fly Brain Emulation
this begs the question... how are we seeing life patterns appear from that?
fcpk··on Hardening Firefox with Anthropic's Red Team
The fact there is no mention of what were the bugs is a little odd. It'd really be nice to see if this is a "weird never happening edge case" or actual issues. LLMs have uncanny abilities to identify failure patterns that it has seen before, but they are not necessarily meaningful.
fcpk··on Why exercise isn't much help if you are trying to lose weight
this is true for weight loss while in a mostly health range. it isn't true for people with high BMIs. for them the scale is a mostly direct match to health and how they look
fcpk··on Why exercise isn't much help if you are trying to lose weight
human bodies are incredibly optimized to store energy for bad times and maintain a good balance at the ideal level. this is why the whole "calories in calories out" is technically true but mostly useless for a lot of people as the calories out is a very hard to compute variable. it also ignores entirely the negative effects of muscle loss.

there is a lot of complexity and difficulty in long term weight loss, we are fighting biology hard there. that's why glp1 agonists are having such a success, they allow to fight hormonal homeostasis with proper weapons.

I have yet to see any research showing a way to durably affect the body's set balance, which would be the revolution.

but this research all in all confirms what we know: * high intensity muscle fiber tearing exercise is much better at not affecting metabolic compensating mechanisms * cardio might be good for health and other things, it's very much neutral or possibly negative for weight loss, as cardio does not build muscle mass * pure diet changes are difficult to make sustainable for many. I have seen it first hand where a constant 300 calories deficit a day resulted in weight gain and muscle mass loss despite cardio.

fcpk··on Taiwan rejects possibility of transferring 40% of semiconductor capacity to US
why would they want to remove the main asset giving them protection.
fcpk··on New wave of GLP-1 drugs is coming–and they're stronger than Wegovy and Zepbound
retrarutride has significant more Gip activity than known drugs. it also has the glucagon receptor activity that raises heartbeat of a large amount (10bpm at typical doses). I wouldn't be surprised it has more side effects if taking long term than the "milder glp1" drugs.
fcpk··on Nova Launcher added Facebook and Google Ads tracking
same thing here. com.teslacoilsw.launcher.prime is a different version and from what I see it doesn't have the tracking ... changing launchers when you have 200+ apps neatly grouped in folders would suck.
fcpk··on What it's like to be banned from the US for fighting online hate
this is just ridiculous anti free speech. just because he assumes a point of view that is mostly disagreed with doesn't make it a target for censoring. it's not a slippery slope, it's the straight path to 1984. dangerous idiots should be allowed to speak. and regarding money there is not a single hint he received any, and he lives in a country that is pretty well policed and not corrupt.
fcpk··on Grey Market Peptides: Not for Human Consumption
it's an usual market. you need to procure very close to the source. grey market vendors from china are ideal. testing their peptides seem to always be above 99.9% purity
fcpk··on Is beef tallow making a comeback?
sadly one of the most frustrating things is that everyone groups saturated fats in one big group. there is lots of evidence that only specific types of saturated fats actually cause CVD, in particular some specific configurations of palmitic acid. the other saturated fats are not nearly as problem causing.
fcpk··on Mapping Protests in Iran
It's a Foundation with strong evidence of ties to Israel and an open agenda against (current) Iran. Don't be surprised.
fcpk··on Mapping Protests in Iran
FDD -> Founded 2001 after 9/11 as "Emet"(truth in hebrew). Foundation for improving Israel's image in North America. Focused on "militant islamism" and has as primary architect a "maximum pressure against Iran" Mark Dubowitz.

Consider the bias that this can imply. This is not to give credence to either side, just that there are very strong partisans everywhere pushing specific agendas.

fcpk··on Anti-aging injection regrows knee cartilage and prevents arthritis
Yeah, a lot of healing mechanisms are also behind many tumor/cancer factors. There's a lot of reasons behind aging phenomenons, and a lot are self protective. It's not given all of the aging is intended and can't be reversed, but a lot of it is there for biological reasons.
fcpk··on Anti-aging injection regrows knee cartilage and prevents arthritis
I have yet to see anything against regular eating of fish and fatty fish other than the "scare" of heavy metals, which only applies for wild fish.
fcpk··on TurboDiffusion: 100–200× Acceleration for Video Diffusion Models
Out of curiosity, what do you do with the footage? in a personal way I found it fun for the occasional funny situational video, or for some small background animations, but not so useful as a whole. I understand for things like making sketches from scripts and quick prototyping it's nice, but I am genuinely curious what's the use :)
