fc_barnes··on In Pursuit of PPE
Parent is a great example of how Republicans constantly lie:

1. Ignoring that POTUS literally told states to fend for themselves on supplies, even pretending he didn’t. Obvious lie.

2. Pretending that the seizure is part of an undeclared federal supply management effort, when it is clearly more likely that these seizures are about political revenge, favoritism, and graft.

This sort of routine lying is positive evidence that all Republicans are in fact aware that their chosen party has descended into rank criminally and that they are knowingly and actively aiding the commission of felonies, i.e. they are guilty of the crime of conspiracy.

To the extent that these Republican antics are going to kill, for the pure sake of political revenge, citizens of blue states and states with Democratic governors, members of the Republican Party should not be surprised if they end up paying a very, very high price in the future.

fc_barnes··on In Pursuit of PPE
The Republican Party is a criminal conspiracy.
fc_barnes··on Attorney General Barr Refuses to Release 9/11 Documents to Victims' Families
Minneapolis field office memo.
fc_barnes··on Trading halted as U.S. stocks plummet
Reminder that markets are human creations and not some natural phenomenon.
fc_barnes··on Apple dropped plan for encrypting backups after FBI complained
But the marketing is nonetheless deceptive. Apple’s practices are much less stringent, and their cooperation with law enforcement much greater, than their marketing and even their privacy pages suggest.

This is a crappy place to turn around and tell your customers, “should’ve read the fine print!”

fc_barnes··on A Sad Day for Rust
I hope this makes it to the top so ngate can write about it...
fc_barnes··on WARP is here
I'm confused about who sees what IP when. I'm also confused about the bandwidth limits on plus. Having essentially two products blended together, and using new technology that behaves uniquely, makes the communication lift here that much heavier.
fc_barnes··on Will America's debt doom us?
So you basically didn't read the article, or it passed right over your head if you did...
fc_barnes··on Socialist Rifle Association
I'm curious why this got flagged? It's a pretty interesting snapshot of the political dynamics around the second amendment, especially with the way other groups have been dealing with them.
fc_barnes··on Effect of High-Dose Vitamin D on Volumetric Bone Density and Bone Strength
Nobody has 0 intake, that is a useless control; nor would any IRB sign off on such a study, because it would be harmful to the subjects.
fc_barnes··on Effect of High-Dose Vitamin D on Volumetric Bone Density and Bone Strength
Yes, it appears that too much vitamin D may decrease bone density.
fc_barnes··on Mach kernel
Is there some relationship between Mach's poor performance and the ability of macOS to remain functional in low-memory situations? Linux has been called out recently for becoming unusable when free memory is low. Using both, I can say that the Mac is hands-down a better OS for desktop use where having the system not freeze is way more important than a 70% slowdown in file transfer rate.

Why is the Mac so much better under low memory conditions than Linux? Is it the kernel, and if so, is there an inherent trade-off between low memory performance and other kinds of performance?

If there is a trade-off, would reworking the Linux kernel to function better under low memory conditions also create a way forward for a non-dbus, non-systemd, yet modern Linux?

fc_barnes··on JuliaCon 2019 Videos
I'm glad Julia is continuing to make progress. There's certainly a learning curve but that's how it goes with these powerful languages. I believe it's inherently superior to the competition, and as long as the rough spots continue to get filed down and the community remains engaged and willing to help newcomers, it will meet with ultimate success.
fc_barnes··on Cobol Still Powers the Global Economy
My understanding is that part of COBOL's longevity stems from its particular handling of fixed-point math being a specified requirement of various financial contracts. Odd to see this write-up not mention fixed-point math, actually.
fc_barnes··on Project Vesta – Mitigating climate change with green sand beaches
Well jeez. I know it's not a popular thought on HN, but climate change is a problem of such scale that it's going to need government-level funding and oversight to find and validate geoengineering solutions, and global-level funding and coordination to implement them. This third-way aspiration to a non-government solution just seems like a pipe dream.
fc_barnes··on The Spanish Prisoner: On the Future of Libra and Bitcoin
The author is painfully edgy and seems to be oblivious to the fact that the main use-case for Bitcoin, aside from transferring wealth from marks to whales, is the purchase of contraband, which Libra presumably won't allow. The article is a reasonably fun read, despite this.
fc_barnes··on Apple iCloud Experiencing Issues
I was noticing some issues with mega sync earlier, maybe these orgs are sharing infrastructure at some level... I guess I won't rage quit just yet
fc_barnes··on Jony Ive to form independent design company with Apple as client
This exactly. I don't know if it's Ive or Cook, but I'm really wondering what I'm doing to do when my older Apple devices kick the bucket.

Apple, if you're listening, bring back real keyboards and the headphone jack!

Daily reminder that goroutines don't require a context switch.
fc_barnes··on Books to Understand Economics
Thomas Sowell, like so many conservative thinkers, is a stupid person's idea of what a smart person sounds like. If that's too harsh for you, sorry, but that's what happens when angry Austrians go through the thread systematically downvoting anyone who doesn't agree with them.
fc_barnes··on Books to Understand Economics
It's a good list. Generally pretty reasonable but they threw in some Austrians at the end for "balance" or something. People usually get more then enough Austrian economics from radio and online ranting, and they get a fair amount of behavioral from pop media.

Honestly, what most people need to get basically educated in econ is 1. Some basic national-accounting type Keynesian macro, 2. Basic forex and bond pricing, 3. Enough education in marginalism to understand comparative advantage and enough education in game theory to genuinely understand the concept of a Nash equilibrium, and 4. A smattering of folks like Adam Smith and Douglass North to understand the human or sociological side of things.

fc_barnes··on People in higher social class have an exaggerated belief that they are better
You can do better than average but still overestimate yourself. And in a world where people judge by appearances, that can be a real advantage.
fc_barnes··on All Chromebooks will also be Linux laptops going forward
Will someone please enable some magic sysrq functionality on machines with reduced keyboards?

This is coming from a person who has had to open up his Chromebook and unplug the battery internally when it inevitably crapped itself from OOM and was nonresponsive to any key press.

fc_barnes··on Nassim Talebs case against Nate Silver is bad math
>I've often found Taleb's ideas to be profound and interesting

Really? Because financial crashes happen a lot more regularly than black swans. This seems like par for the course for Taleb; I've never read him in depth but he always seemed like a memer.

fc_barnes··on Warp – Mobile VPN
One thing about using VPNs on the phone is that a lot of mobile/public networks only allow port 80, which prevents the VPN from connecting. If CF makes a version of wireguard that can do port 80, that would be great.

As far as their bottom line, I guess this helps them sell services by having a documented number of people suckling the internet straight from the CF teat?

fc_barnes··on 5-MeO-DMT Associated with Improvements in Depression, Anxiety
That was probably actually an nbome (e.g. 25-c-nbome)sold as 2-ce.
fc_barnes··on 5-MeO-DMT Associated with Improvements in Depression, Anxiety
You're confusing chronic abuse with overdose. A psychedelic overdose just means you're in a chemically induced psychosis. It's easy to die in this state, but by falling off a balcony, not because you stop breathing. Some of the newfangled psychedelics coming out of China can cause serotonin syndrome, however, which can be fatal. But it's not practically possible to overdose on the traditional psychedelics.
fc_barnes··on Nobody Likes the “Idea Guy”
What if you're supposed to come up with ideas, but not given the ability to meet with developers to discuss them nor system access to pursue them on your own?
