fbn79··on Why Haskell?
We need a language with Haskell syntax, Rust memory management and Typescript toolchain/ecosystem :))
fbn79··on Show HN: Tune LLaMa3.1 on Google Cloud TPUs
Really incredible :O I was imagining numbers with two extra zeros
fbn79··on Show HN: Tune LLaMa3.1 on Google Cloud TPUs
I'm totally new to AI. If I take for example LLaMa 3.1 (small size 8B), what's the rough budget to fine tune it against for example 1GB of extra text data, in any cloud GPU service? (if compute time is not a problem, I can wait)
fbn79··on Lidl's Cloud Gambit: Europe's Shift to Sovereign Computing
From Italy there is Aruba (www.cloud.it). Not bad. But quality/price ratio worst than Hetzener I think

If you have SSH access you can use it as door to setup a simple VPN https://github.com/sshuttle/sshuttle
fbn79··on We Love Writing Software So Much, We're Willing to Do It for Free
In my opinion open source software is usually not a ready to use product. More often is a library, a framework or a product prototype that need to be tailored, installed, configured, expanded and maintained by other developers do be useful and produce value. So I see it as just an agreement between developers to share efforts on build base software tools on which grow own private business. It we want to compare it to a traditional business is like a group of farmers that agree to share for free the best of seeds each one produce. So that everyone can grow a better harvest every year. So the business is not in the seeds and seeds producing, but in what you grow from that seeds.
fbn79··on Show HN: A JavaScript UI library for imperative JSX
Why not use template literals and a css like syntax for selecting and update?

setContent(css`p[key=counter]{ content: 'The count is ${count}'}; }`);

fbn79··on SCIM: Ncurses based, Vim-like spreadsheet
The great drawback of TUI app is that are quite unusable from touch devices, or generally devices without a keyboard). If you find a way to make them usable on mobile I think they can get a great comeback
fbn79··on Linux virtual machines, with a focus on running containers
Can become an alternative to vagrant+vitualbox?
fbn79··on Enlightenmentware
In my case Cycle JS (https://cycle.js.org) was very enlightenment and pedagogic. It make me realize that software is always and only a matter of data transformation. And those pure data transformations can be keep separated and decoupled from "side effects".
fbn79··on Leaving Rust gamedev after 3 years
Honestly I have not read all the article. What language they are going to use instead of Rust?
fbn79··on German state moving 30k PCs to LibreOffice
Another article about migration to linux after 2019 https://computerhoy.com/noticias/software/barcelona-cambiara... and a Gemini sumup https://g.co/gemini/share/74fe50828fa1
fbn79··on Chicken Sexing and Knowing
The whole poultry industry is insane and "criminal". If eggs costs just 2$ and McChicken less than 2$, and company still profits you cannot expect an ethic industry.
fbn79··on Maybe Functions
I think the post is related tothe "Null vs Maybe" problem. See https://web.archive.org/web/20230329075114/https://www.nickk... already discussed here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5577364
fbn79··on Dada, an experimental new programming language
niko judging from Github commits https://github.com/dada-lang/dada/graphs/contributors
fbn79··on Ask HN: Why isn't Apple competing with Nvidia?
Compete with NVIDIA is not only a matter of build and sell GPU. If you want to compete with NVIDIA you need to develop your proprietary GPGPU platform (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CUDA) and convince thousands of developers that their software (totally based on NVIDIA API that are around since 2007) must be redesigned and reprogrammed to support you new proprietary API and Hardware.
fbn79··on Meta has sold nearly 20M Quest headsets, but retention struggles remain (2023)
"Quest 2 appears to be the vast majority". Quest 1 and 2 cannot do mixed reality, you can compare them to a smartphone without a camera, you miss a lot of use cases and engagement
fbn79··on Russian troops use Starlink licensed and imported from Dubai
I doubt iPhones are very common among russian soldiers. And Androids are probably mostly of Chinese origin (with Chinese custom OS).
fbn79··on Russian troops use Starlink licensed and imported from Dubai
Having to rely on a hostile technology that could be remote disabled in any moment is not a good indicator for good shape of army in battlefield

> I want to run Firefox on my phone

It's simple, don't buy an iPhone. If you say "But I want an iPhone because is better than any Android", than you have to think that maybe iPhone is better because of the more restrictive rules.

fbn79··on Haskell WebAssembly in the Browser
Looks cool, I'm not much into webassembly... but I see just fews lines of Haskell code produced a gzipped wasm of 448K. How does this compares to other languages?
