faust201··on Verizon starts requiring 365 days of paid service before it will unlock phones
People often give bs reasons like

- oh. I like night time camera from 1K pixel or iPhone

faust201··on Apple testing new App Store design that blurs the line between ads and results
> I pay Apple premium price for their phones. If they become as bad as the other, what’s the point to pay so much ?

No choice. Most Apple users usually defend by telling... they are not as bad a Google or now it is impossible to escape ecosystem.

This kind of articles is moot.

- Will the author use it daily? Forever?

- price point? Many people cannot afford that.

> Not Android with Google quietly running 47 background processes to figure out whether you’re sad enough to buy ice cream.

BS. Look at all the background processes in any device? Even stock debian or postmarket OS.

> According to research from the Electronic Frontier Foundation and multiple independent security audits. Open source operating systems like Sailfish provide significantly more transparency than closed source alternatives. You can actually see what the code is doing instead of just taking a company’s word for it.

EFF says this also:

https://ssd.eff.org/module/your-security-plan

Trying to protect all your data from everything all the time is impractical and exhausting.

In computer security, a threat is a potential event that could undermine your efforts to defend your data. You can counter the threats you face by determining what you need to protect and from whom you need to protect it. This is the process of security planning, often referred to as “threat modeling .”

Nice. IP is one thing that has ruined many things. Unless you are WIPO and Oracle Fan.

All current AI companies are closed. What benefit?

Most things from Uni are published openly.

BTW, did people in US pay royalty to China for inventing paper?

Pretty sure these marketing speak was decided half-an-year before. Sales and marketing just do their job

faust201··on The world is one bad decision away from a silicon Ice Age
The people with power and money (incl. most in HN) don't care.

Most of the rest are in state of apathy if they have enough time to think about earth.

Others are barely surviving.

I am not supporting tariffs. Just that it is sad the majority of MNC and SV is totally in the hands of US admin,

India is not as dependent on exports as the UK. The connections are stronger to the UK.

> Vietnam mandating banks only use unrooted mobile phones

Other way around. They are used to using money. Even India tried to make everything electronic. A bit successful but not totally.

Yes Playstore is important. But unless US mandates Qualcomm and mediatek, apple to brick all non US.phones this won't happen.

I am curious.

Does the flatpak Firefox allows access to all folders?

faust201··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
This is only for people that know choices.

We at out Uni provide default Ubuntu installs on laptops. Most people just live with whatever UI.

I have a feeling that many have stopped configuring, themeing etc. those only from 80s to 2000 were just spending lots of time building and creating many themes like matrix etc.

Also people are so addicted to smartphone. That is the main place for their heart.

faust201··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
May be in the US (as Apple products are cheaper and people are dependent on iMessge)

Rest will remain on pirated windows or linu.many often don't even use computer.

Yes hardware is great. Price per performance watt is also great. But UI sucks. Look at all then posts even macOS fans about new macOS release like the glass ones. I prefer ssh and running jobs in macOS.
faust201··on I Build an Idea I Love. I Need You to Tear It Apart
> You browse profiles of real people who are interested in the same topics

In face to face ... Most people want to conform to common and uncontroversial interests or they blow up.

Ideally what you say can be easily done by Reddit or FB or YouTube. Take for example, PBS Space Time. There is a community there or in reddit. There is intense discussion. If you think people would share calendars etc then that is a big ask. Maybe. Maynot be. There may be diversity accepting PBS Space Time persons and not accepting persons. That is the reason people sit infront of their own screens and type only about that. If they disagree then they can downvote and move on.

Face to face means safety, open acceptance etc.

BUT wish you all the best. It may work. People may share: https://www.reddit.com/r/quotes/comments/8605g9/people_just_...

faust201··on Sergey Brin's Unretirement
It is the news media report calling it work. For some people it is just a passion. My boss at a Uni works literally 20 hours per day (he is rich and has a lifetime job). But science is his passion. He would not call it work. Maybe Brin has ideas. he has so much money that he does not need to work but he gives his brain some work.
faust201··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
One good thing is choice. You are free to use macOS or even windows.

But this battery argument is bull shit

15 years ago it was so difficult to find charging points.

Not now. I have never ever been in a situation the I needed to be away from charging for > 6 hours. 6-10 hours is really possible.

If your working or life demands that then pity you. I have better life/work.

And again choice. You are free to use macOS or even windows.

faust201··on Microsoft kills official way to activate Windows 11/10 without internet
With all respect libre office startup times are awful in Linux. UI still needs work over. Lots of resources. Libre office works poorly if one has 4 or 8 GB RAM.

If there was a minimal footprint libre office (like online with collaboration line or next cloud it will be great but it is very unreliable)

And often people have gotten used to

- simple just open with browser - needs few resources - love or hate Android is most popular. So people are able access documents in phone

There are also companies slowing realizing the strong use of Google docs so that definitely design it more compatible with Google docs rather than libre office. And many companies have already bought into Google ecosystem.

faust201··on Changes to Android Open Source Project
This is because of legacy. And even now lots of people assemble and build PC.

My worry is one fine day Microsoft, Samsung Apple, and Google (rest of SV Media companies like Netflix etc) will join hands in bringing security and force a ChromeOS or macOS type totally- we decide everything for you.

faust201··on Self hosting my media library with Jellyfin and Wireguard on Hetzner

I have become a silent spectator.

My guess is that they are focused only on to cashcow -> enterprise, office, (and all Copilot BS). Sadly very few of IT people I know of move to Linux or macOS for this specific reason. Just like XP users tolerated the tons of systray, toolbar crap - most are tolerating AI shit. To be fair to even knowledgeable people, most are happy to live their live on Smartphone (+ maybe tablet). Most get a corporate laptop from work.

Or gamers that are already used to Windows. So inertia.

faust201··on Incremental Backups of Gmail Takeouts
