faust201··on PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock
totally...

Funnily what I found was to install 1.1.1.1 from cloudflare. Enable that. PipePipe works perfectly.

faust201··on F-Droid 2.0
when you use adb - no need to wait for 24hours. Just use android studio or adb install
faust201··on Linux support is coming to Snapdragon X2 series
Are you sure? Snapdragon laptops have worst sales in Windows world. Or are you a MS ARM guy?
faust201··on Linux support is coming to Snapdragon X2 Series
A lot of people do see the graphs. But reality is - unless they cooperate with lkml and merge it there is no point. Ubuntu has the only beta ISO for it - works not very good for the Lenovo. Qualcomm does not provide any support. Then people won't buy.
faust201··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
> I hope people remember this when advocating for chromium. Just because it is open source doesn't mean they don't control it. We need to start the long process of hard forking now or turn to alternatives like Firefox as a new foundation.

This is correct but rarely in practiced.

During firefox DRM/HTML5 issue, I know many people from Free software foundation Europe absolutely telling in their blogs, talks etc please stop Mozilla from implementing this DRM or that... but finally when I spoke to these in private they told --- ya, whatever - I need to see this series in netflix etc- so I have another device with chrome etc to watch it. (Indeed Firefox did implement it)

This behavior is the reason average Joe gives up...

faust201··on I don't like passkeys
My actual experience is people with passkey are fine. No more account take over. Mote over they like frictionless login.

Yes there are few that used bitwarden and lost everything as their sync using syncthing failed.

faust201··on I don't like passkeys
Or they have a laptop or tablet - even the cheapest one that has logged into Google or Apple. That way they can recover.
faust201··on I don't like passkeys
this is ridiculous. I don't even have a bubble device. Run lineageos in a decent 2020 device moto G32 for €100.

Yes, you can afford to host everything locally. Not everyone can.

faust201··on I don't like passkeys
You are exaggerating. If the loss or lockdown is so bad then many would have stopped using any of icloud or google equivalent. People are able to depend on it. People are able to repair and use phones even when it falls into abyss.
faust201··on I don't like passkeys
At the same time, I know so many people believing DIY raspberrypi based NAS and losing lots of data (thankfully they had cloud backups).

Not everyone has access to server grade hardware.

faust201··on I don't like passkeys
This is a different issue. Not everyone has a data engineer - know it all as a family member.

And you need to accept it works for millions.

faust201··on I don't like passkeys
Same way. A majority generally have a old phone that was already signed in to google. Or if they remember only Apple ID and password (one very difficult password) + sms. They can login on to a new phone.

Everything is SYNCED immediately.

What if you have a ransomeware that destroy everything on the same day your house and all backups burn down. And you cant get it from immutable backups as you wrote that decryption key in paper. And the bank will not allow you to access it as the govt deported you elsewhere.

faust201··on I don't like passkeys
But a majority don't do that. For them let them use passkeys. If the possibility is once in 10 years then I am happy to do that. A majority is happy to do that.

And yes, Google or Apple - dont say you should not keep passwords in your database and sync it with dropbox. DIY.

Rest of us want convenience.

faust201··on I don't like passkeys
The point is people like this usually are arguing as they hate adopting new tech. And they hate FAANG. No way to convince them.
faust201··on I don't like passkeys
A majority have more than one phone. Or at least they can get a new SIM card and sign into the iCloud account. Then all passkeys are synced from cloud.

Yes, if you are edward snowden then not for you. For rest of us - it is useful

faust201··on I don't like passkeys
as long as you have one working device all will be OK. Either you scan the QR code shown by the website. or if you did login to Chrome with google account then desktop or laptop will just sign you -friction less. Same with iCloud account.

If you browser vendor has implemented passkey then all good.

Most things are built for the majority users. Most don't change. Most don't debate browser wars in hn. Life is like that.

For Wii etc. You just scan the QR code shown in the TV interface. all just works.

Yes, if you want 100% privacy and will do only your own dovecot server then it is not for you.

faust201··on I don't like passkeys
Then that family member does not worry like you do worry. The main point is assuming one can have a proper security for Google account - everything else becomes easy.

The fearmongering of losing google account should stop. Yes, some people lose it. There are a larger proportion losing/getting pwned by repeat use. For the majority - just pressing the fingerprint to access an account (like amazon/eBay) via passkey is great.

Fairly technical co-workers - I used to suggest them to buy USB security key few years ago. Now that same fairly technical some how has at least 2 devices with them - so they just skipped the USB security key need - and just use Google (in Android) or iPhone in Apple ecosystem. Everything just works.

Yes, there will be a poor soul that may lost everything with only one device.

faust201··on UPI: Anatomy of a Payment Transaction
Agree to your point. But the hawker in street in India wants to get paid or he or she cannot eat next day. And if majority say they will use UPI/online payments - they accept.

Do you live there? Every other shop will avoid paying you change including govt offices. While that should be resolved properly they did this workaround using online? Not perfect.

> We've seen basically every country in the world make promises and break them.

I sincerely hope you change the world.

faust201··on UPI: Anatomy of a Payment Transaction
KYC and centralisation means govt will promise your money is there. These are essential for dev country or 3rd world. Even with so much kyc often there are fraud. This has minimised fraud.

If you are looking for RMS style freedom etc then look elsewhere. This is not Iceland or Nordic.

One another overlooked issue is India was the largest printer of currency. Until UPI etc modernisation - lots of torn currency - usually caused arguments/inconveniences among population. Also often shopkeepers or transport agencies did not return proper money change upon payment.

Irrespective of privacy, now it take few seconds to pay. Just works. Even without NFC. No worry about return change.

faust201··on Spain Orders Blacklist of Palantir from Public and Private Companies
Are you sure? It is sometimes close to 30°C in summer in Fue. BTW, did you forget sealevel rises, dust from Sahara, what is you have many days of > 40km/h winds. all those are climate change.
faust201··on European digital ID wallets rely on safety services of Google and Apple
Isnt the aim to remove dependency on Google/Apple? EU should have forced Google and Apple to allow people to use NFC pay without having Google or Apple accounts.

If you talk about using NFC card. Yes, that is available.

Nothing is difficult. Even cash is possible.

faust201··on European digital ID wallets rely on safety services of Google and Apple
Many useful features like verified by visa or Google Pay or Apple pay is not available.

If you are that anal then using railway does not need app. You can use a mobile browser or desktop. I have seen people show QR code from their computer too. For D-Ticket one can buy from one of the local transport associations - with Chip Card (I am using that).

faust201··on European digital ID wallets rely on safety services of Google and Apple
Ideally they should have also told all German banks distribute or offer non-App based accounts or 2FA? But they did not.

Also people are dependent on Play or App store. DB does not offer the app for direct download.

faust201··on Googlebook
this does not mean anything logical. Billions use android. Some will be affected due to any company or ID etc.

Pretty sure you can visit your local apple store and see many people asking for shattered screen or lost iphone. They did lose their accounts.

Moreover even if you use macbook - if you lose google or apple ID situation is same. (for the majority) appstore is important. See your comment https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48111545#48123885 you are happy to give everything to iCloud but don't like Google?

I can also store all my data in hetzner cloud. Use chromebook only as a hardware. If Google account is blocked then use Guest session. No account needed. Your turn?

faust201··on Googlebook
Reddit r/k12sysadmin disagrees. Sure, as always there will some that will switch to Apple. Why not. Some even have MS.
faust201··on Googlebook
So whats next. Apple will force corners... Glass. Microsoft will push copilot. Firefox will push AI.

Are you waiting for w3m or curl?

faust201··on Google Cloud Fraud Defence is just WEI repackaged
So many in hn already downvoted you. That says the SV nature and opinions in tech sector.

They do.

faust201··on Hold on to Your Hardware
It was awful especially if you use open source OS like Linux. It slowed the computer, fans full speed. Wtf are you smoking?
