fatihdonmez··on Arabic, a great language, has a low profile
They can complain whatever they want to but here are the facts. Turks brutally were murdered almost 70-80 years to turned to be a muslim and start believing arab god to survive. Turks adopted all the arabic culture/traditions as part of islam. Turks used arabic alphabet along with the bunch of arabic words. Even nowadays current government is pushing more islamic/arabic values to turkish people as part of islamization process.
fatihdonmez··on Arabic, a great language, has a low profile
Of course it worked, now we can easily understand other turkic people from Kygrzystan, Uzbekistan, Uyghur, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan. It’s one of the most important and critical reform, Ataturk did.
fatihdonmez··on Arabic, a great language, has a low profile
I'm turkish and because of hidden arabic imperialism and assimilation rooted deep in islam, I refuse to use even arabic words which are common in turkish.

there's also opportunity cost which you're missing. Average VC can invest limited number of startups. Instead of buffer They could invest some other startup which eventually exit with 100x

fatihdonmez··on Signs that a startup is focused on stuff that doesn’t matter
I'm interested actually as an engineer who do some side gigs and lives in Bangkok currently. Where is this shared office and how much do you pay for it?

fatihdonmez··on Facebook to Change News Feed to Focus on Friends and Family
Facebook did the same with buy more like and promote posts features.

I have written a blog post about it two years ago.

That's why I don't get into their bandwagon as customer anymore.

fatihdonmez··on Samsung Acquires Joyent
China is definitely way better than Japan. Maybe imitation of all western products year over year could help them to have more western way of working style and etc but still culture is workaholic, robot like obeying, not criticising at all.
fatihdonmez··on Samsung Acquires Joyent
Then you should see the japanese way of working, it's also quite fun! I believe this is common in most of asia. I have worked in China and it's not quite different at all from what you're saying.
fatihdonmez··on PayPal halts operations in Turkey
Despite the what effort? It was obvious this is coming. Turkish financial system has lots of regulations after 2001 economic crisis. Paypal should get the banking licence to operate. This includes physical servers located in Turkey, accessing data by authorities, taxing on transaction and etc.

Paypal didn't apply any of these items. Maybe Turkish market is not big enough for them to invest on these regulations.

I have started a fintech startup in Turkey (similar to Stripe) but before we launch, regulation changed and to run a payment gateway, you should have at least 5M TRY invested in the business. So yes regulation exists and bad for startups and small businesses but for business like Paypal it's not about "effort".

fatihdonmez··on Rent-a-Foreigner in China
As a foreigner in Nanjing, I always get similar reactions from people. Especially night clubs are very friendly, free drinks, priority for vip and etc.

fatihdonmez··on We need a simple ad free youtube alternative
it's solution but consider it as opportunity for new startups. I'm considering it as a problem with current sites.
fatihdonmez··on We need a simple ad free youtube alternative
Of course I know the difficulties but I'm considering it as an entrepreneur. Yeap challenge is big but risk/reward ratio. It can be opportunity for new comers. Just brain storming man.
fatihdonmez··on What is happening in İstanbul?
Yeah you're absolutely right. While I'm in protest, my father in another city talkin about provocateurs about us without knowing I'm part of it (btw not a provocateur). So there is two side of coin. About media blackout, there's no official claims but all media company are heavily in business with government so they can do it without any official requests. Which they did it because media during protests only broadcast cartoon movies and other stupid stuff. Here is the biggest mobile network of Turkey Turkcell -> http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-981808

And here is the social media outage during the hottest time of protests -> http://techcrunch.com/2013/06/01/as-anti-government-protests...

fatihdonmez··on What is happening in İstanbul?
It started as a civilian resistance for excessive police force. Unique and special part of this movement was political distribution of people in it. Erdogan's party rule 3'rd times the government. At this point they changed from independent, democrat, liberal party to totaliter one. So people in the movement is consist of multiple former Akp (Erdogan's party) supporter, too. That's why it should be important for Erdogan. But instead he's arguing that most of them provoked by other forces so ignoring. But now, 3'rd day of activity, it changed from civilian movement to anarchist, provokative anti-governmental and mostly illegal movements. That's why now people should calm down. Because initial point of movement succeed it's purpose. Park is safe (court decision), police is off the Taksim Square.

ps: i'm talkin as person who was in activity actually and hurted by police brutality. #direngeziparki

fatihdonmez··on Facebook buys Parse
I'm the one early adapters of Facebook in Turkey since 2006. I was 19 at that time and studying in college. I was trying to push my friends to sign up because it looked like i was the only one in facebook town, alone. Since then i have chance to watch evolution of facebook while I and my friends are growing up. Now I'm 26 and i have bunch of people in my friends (400+) including 50< and 15> years old relatives. I can say that now I'm feeling alone again, despite the crowded feed(bunch of sponsored stories and meme). I can say that I don't have friends to push them to sign up anymore. Summary it's time to move on for all of us even facebook. In this perspective It makes sense to buy b2b company.
fatihdonmez··on Physicists To Test If Universe Is A Computer Simulation
Actually it's what most religions said about universe. It was all programmed at the beginning. All of our actions and their future possible results are known by god. The problem is how we can develop awareness about it, if we doesn't have enough perception by default. Religions say that just believe without questioning, we have reasons, we create the signs for you to believe. I don't know, but as an engineer it does look like god is the head engineer.
fatihdonmez··on Disconnected
lived in china for six months and almost disconnected, i can say that was awesome experience. it has been 3 years since then and i noticed with your post, i need it too. coding is challenge and fun but if you put a startup pressure on it with high entrepreneurship spirit without any monetization, it gives you nothing but consume your life. anyway have fun, I'll give a break at the end of 2013.

they're also vahabi which is very extremist part of islamic nation so it's not quite suprising actually. As you see if an islamic country which has a solid relationship with western countries(money, petrol, strategic position in middle east), event they have monarchy, even they're degenerated, they don't need to be forced by USA, EU to have a democracy which others, Iraq, Syria already are having. God bless America
