falsaberN1··on GNU Nano 8 comes with modern key bindings
I wouldn't complain for sure. I always loved edit.com and have such fond memories of it.

I used mcedit as terminal text editor for a while, but it was never installed anywhere but at home, so ended up defaulting to vi and nano for consistency. If nano became a bit more like edit.com that'd mean it'd be almost everywhere by default once versions catch up...one can dream.

Welp, this is big enough to make Nano my default editor. While it'll take a while to become "ubiquitous" (as in version 8.0+) it's trivial enough to build for any systems I manage.

The new mousewheel behavior is particularly nice. It's totally up to my taste with --modernbindings and --mouse.

falsaberN1··on Apple apologizes for iPad 'Crush' ad that 'missed the mark'
I always understood the whole point of political correctness was to not spew hateful words about anyone and that should be the standard.

Criticism is one thing, but the poster felt the need to "educate" all of us about how an entire country's opinion is invalid because "it's not an utopia". Nobody brought that up, and disregarding an entire culture's opinion of an advertisement campaign because weebs have unrealistic expectations, in a discussion with a valid and informative point about said culture, is tastelessly petty. And why belittle liberal arts majors anyway?

falsaberN1··on Apple apologizes for iPad 'Crush' ad that 'missed the mark'
I'm honestly shocked. This is not okay, specially when the parent post is not even praising that country in any exaggerated way, just stating a fact.

There are no acceptable targets when it comes to culture.

falsaberN1··on Insects and other animals have consciousness
Yes, because there's no option to negotiate, placate or convince the mosquito to leave. The bites can cause allergic reactions, and even just a nasty itchy bite lasts a quarter of their lifetime. I get nasty reactions when they bite my hands that last for longer than the mosquito lives as an adult!

And it can be even worse, in some areas of the world a mosquito bite can indirectly kill you. I think it's pretty much the only situation where it's justified. Unless we can invent a better solution at least.

And then the production models show up.
falsaberN1··on Are Japanese anime robots isometric or allometric?
My favorite mecha film is Ratatouille.

Or Boss Borot vs Anti-Spiral.
falsaberN1··on Are Japanese anime robots isometric or allometric?
I watched Shinkalion purely out of desperation and was pleasantly surprised despite being a show for kids and having "terrible graphics".

And yeah there's not much mainstream, but you always get some Mazinger spinoff, some Gundam and other "minor" stuff. The genre is definitely not popular but it's alive.

Super Robot Taisen is also still ongoing, and while it's not a show (although it's been adapted a few times) it's a good way to find stuff that might have escaped your radar. And the originals can help quench the thirst for new cool robots with flashy moves. Lately they have been adding "never animated" stuff like Mazinger ZERO, GaoGaiGar Vs. Betterman and Getter Devolution which is nice too.

I'm still not going to feel bad when squashing mosquitos.

Spiders are friends though. And bugs like moths just get evicted if they are a nuisance. I feel bad about killing those.

But screw mosquitos. Well I guess I could let the males live, but I have no way to know.

falsaberN1··on Google ordered to identify who watched certain YouTube videos
Huh. I guess it's obvious I don't use TikTok (I'm past 30, I have no business going there) but I had no idea it had actual political content.
falsaberN1··on Google ordered to identify who watched certain YouTube videos
TikTok has a narrative? I thought it was all about cooking recipes that may or may not destroy you if you make them as instructed.
falsaberN1··on What does Alan Kay think about LLMs?
Try looking at things from my angle: A few errors in an image can be not much of a big deal (with modern tools, the mistakes are within human margin of error on average), but errors in delivery of textual data such as facts, dates or code can be far more severe and subtle. There are ways to work around or reduce the shortcomings of image generation, and the quirks you mention have drop-in solutions for local installs, but you can't quite fix wrong facts in text automatically, or the context going off-rails. It can be much harder to catch than a hand missing a finger, too.

It's also worth mentioning you can run a heavily customized Stable Diffusion setup at home with fairly modest hardware with satisfactory results if you know what you are doing, but anything you can run at home for LLMs in the same hardware is dog slow and actually kind of terrible.

falsaberN1··on What does Alan Kay think about LLMs?
Transparency won't help a lot from a technical standpoint (seems more like a solution to a legal issue than a technical one). I can't trust LLMs because they just...recombine text by probabilities and aren't deterministic. I get incorrect information every time I ask them a thing, and it's incorrect in different ways every time. The only things they seem to get consistently correct are very widespread facts that are much faster and trivial to google.

I still find it funny we managed to get image generation working so much better than text.

falsaberN1··on How big is YouTube?
Funny, for me it's the opposite, I hardly ever set foot outside of my subcriptions page except for searching, which is how I find new channels to add to subs.
falsaberN1··on Open source rules engine for Magic: The Gathering
Not quite, there was another developer that quietly made a lot of work in the time he was around, after Grimm just vanished shortly after those posts, and basically left the entire thing in an usable state for later. Unfortunately he left after a series of personal tragedies that rendered him unable to function for a while.

That guy never gets any credit which is rather sad. I really don't know how he still has a will to live after all that has happened to him.

falsaberN1··on Why the Human Brain Perceives Small Numbers Better
Huh. Interesting. I thought it was one of those things like how we ended up with base 10 numbers because we have 5x2 fingers and that kinda stuff, but interesting to know I was off.
falsaberN1··on Why the Human Brain Perceives Small Numbers Better
Is it really four? Could have sworn it was five, since you got a "middle" to help managing the group or subgroup. At least I immediately bunch things in groups of five, so I always thought it was the correct one.

Couldn't agree more. There's this odd notion that you can't be involved into anything you don't directly profit from, and while that might be a great mindset for business, it's not quite "in touch".

Value is relative. Some people value attention, showing off, the nice feeling of helping others, contributing to a community, stuff like "I made this tool to help with a task I struggled with, maybe it can help others too, I'll put it in Github" or simply having a good time. People's time is their own, and they'll use it however they want.

I'd rather have random ads have a chance to show me something I want that targeted ads showing me something I already stopped wanting. EDIT: I'd add, I never get ads for stuff like food, which are the ads that work for me on TV ("That looks good, I might try that") but online I only get ads for tech products, usually ones I don't need (because I do my homework and found something better) or I already use. Let's not get into products not available for purchase in my country...
falsaberN1··on EU data regulator bans personalised advertising on Facebook and Instagram
You assume people stealing your private details for using it against you, are going to use it unaltered and in context. With enough bad faith and some manipulation, or just a bit of a twist, anything can be weaponized against you.

If private data is stored, there's already a chance of it getting out. You may get lucky, you may not, but for someone that hates you enough, any random detail can be a weapon. Even stuff that doesn't depend on your actions, like religion, country of origin or even medical details. People you associate with, even at a superficial level, can make you guilty by association. And let's not get into stuff like porn habits...

Political manipulation can be made real easy if they got dirt on you, too.

falsaberN1··on EU data regulator bans personalised advertising on Facebook and Instagram
Problem is that they show you the notebook after you have purchased one. The car after you bought one. Medical services after you get back from the hospital.

Your ability to discover relevant products from targeted advertisement is flawed to begin with.

falsaberN1··on The slow death of authenticity in an attention economy
You obtain "literally dead" privileges if you are a ghost, too, of course.

OMG A GOAST SO SPOOKY

falsaberN1··on The slow death of authenticity in an attention economy
Hm well you may be right there, I admit I was mostly thinking about person-to-person engagement than twitter timelines.
falsaberN1··on The slow death of authenticity in an attention economy
Yes. Definitely.

If I say "I literally broke my arm" after I actually broke my arm, that use is completely correct. But you cannot be literally dead and still type a message, unless it's an automated message that you ordered someone/something to send AFTER you died.

falsaberN1··on The slow death of authenticity in an attention economy
You call them naive like if it was a bad thing. I for one welcome the naive ones, they don't feel like they are transparently trying to take advantage.
falsaberN1··on The slow death of authenticity in an attention economy
I'd say it even magnifies it to borderline cartoonish extremes. Twitter in particular is the loneliest place on Earth.
falsaberN1··on The slow death of authenticity in an attention economy
I don't know about you, but if I go out with someone for dinner and that someone is constantly on Twitter with their phone, I consider that terribly rude.
