falsaberN1··on Reasons to Dislike AI Coding
I like coding. You can take away my AWK and C, Bash and Go and Javascript (yes I even enjoy coding Javascript unironically, sue me. I like making self-contained HTML5 one-file-and-offline tools for fun) only from my cold, dead hands. But don't we get one of these articles like once a week at least? It's getting kind of tiresome.

Like, I get the idea, I really do, but is there a need to announce it to the winds so often? Is this a pride thing?

falsaberN1··on I'm the AGI that's wiping out humanity
So AGI is just a guy with a computer.
falsaberN1··on Show HN: TinyAIArena watch AI agents battle it out
This amuses me greatly. Nice!

Although it'd be even funnier to have some sort of thing like Omega (1989 programming game) where their programming determines the outcome. Heck, if you don't do it I might, although I don't have any good server infrastructure to host it.

falsaberN1··on First Shader from Zero in Godot 4
Godot is great for sure. The animation system is a delight and the python-like gdscript is easy to use. I love it to bits.
falsaberN1··on Attention is all you have
I tried it after seeing that link here and it's been really useful. I happened to find myself in the type of situation where I'd need such a system after a couple days and it managed to keep the (volatile) info I wanted. Good stuff!
falsaberN1··on You can defeat the Dream Devourer from Chrono Trigger using an int overflow
Funny, I very much prefer Legend of Mana and SaGa Frontier (specially the first, has more robots).

The atmosphere in Cross is really good yeah, but the plot and gameplay issues really hold it back. I can forgive it being a bad sequel (mean-spirited towards Trigger at times for some odd reason) or having a silly plot, but I can't forgive the wasted potential. Feels like the director lost interest once the Radical Dreamers portion was remade.

falsaberN1··on You can defeat the Dream Devourer from Chrono Trigger using an int overflow
So many memorable tracks and setpieces...we had it good.
falsaberN1··on You can defeat the Dream Devourer from Chrono Trigger using an int overflow
Cross does look very good, I can agree to that, but there are things that bother me severely besides the story, mostly how the gameplay is designed in a way where just smashing circle will win you any battle because Serge is ridiculously strong and mandatory. The element system is very interesting but outside THOSE TWO GUYS (you know who) and the final boss, you are never compelled to use it because the fights are so easy that it's just faster to have Serge cut everything to size. If you choose Glenn over Razzli (and if you choose Razzli you have to get Korcha) the game becomes even easier. And despite the huge roster of characters most of the times it's just more efficient to use Serge, Glenn and Kid/Fargo for stealing (if you want a 100% run).

Even if you go out of your way to use your favorite characters or try to use elements it just becomes slower but not harder. There's almost no reason to use the League of Extraordinary Accents. This game SCREAMS to have something like Lufia II's Ancient Cave where you can get some thrills with those mechanics. The fixed level system really works against it.

There's potential in there, but it feels like most of the mechanics shy away from using it.

Also, despite the music being great, the battles and boss battles reuse the same theme 99% of the time, which gets tiring fast. And the regular boss battle theme happens to be the worst track in all of the game (DU-DU! DUDUDUDU-DU-DU! pirori pirori pirori~ DU-DU! DUDUDUDU-DU-DU!)

But the worst part is the freaking dwarfs trying to give you the eco-friendly message about how humans are destroying the environment and whatnot...despite humans not even being industrialized in all of El Nido (except for those guys outside of time) and they say that while committing genocide against the fairies with heavy smog-spewing machinery and tanks. Like give me a break... Every human settlement in El Nido is comfy nature-friendly villages and you are giving me the talk while riding a freaking tank.

falsaberN1··on You can defeat the Dream Devourer from Chrono Trigger using an int overflow
I don't want Chrono Cross-contamination in my trigger, thanks.

Chrono Cross is a very interesting game on its own but it's a terrible sequel that is remarkably spiteful to its senior. (The thing with FATE and Robo, the Porre thing, the fate of Crono and co., it's a terrible fanfic made canon).

Trigger only worked because of Toriyama gathering the all-star staff (look up the interview with Torishima giving the details). Cross was out of his hands and it shows.

falsaberN1··on Run QWEN3.8 27B on 16gb Nvidia GPUs
With llama.cpp (CUDA) and a 5060ti (16GB) I get 60t/s with 128K token space. Odd you got 7t/s, did you verify all the model was loaded in VRAM? (--gpu-layers all)
falsaberN1··on The contagion of fear
Yes.

Because ultimately those things only run on very expensive, very rare hardware. They cannot multiply exponentially or do any of those scifi tropes because there's no system for them to run into. They can't control a phone and load a 1T model into it. So all they got is a few relatively uncommon datacenters that are already busy running their own models and stuff.

Unless AI suddenly figures out a way to run on a toaster by itself, propagate the model, propagate the agent and do all that completely undetected, an AI is not any more dangerous than a single guy with a computer.

falsaberN1··on Spark: Sparklines in your shell
I made one of these in AWK because I have an AWK problem and it may be an addiction. Send help.

Jokes aside this is always a good thing, the ability to roughly visualize graphs real quick can be really useful for sysadmins, data-massagers and other nerds. If you don't use this or the alternatives suggested in the comments code your own! Make your logs, analysis tools and other visualizations prettier! Add colors or other bells and whistles at your convenience!

I really like the very concept of sparklines, if you can't tell.

falsaberN1··on The whole premise of checking for human writing is daft
That's...not proving a point, that's vandalism.
falsaberN1··on Knoppix
Ooh, didn't know it was possible to specify the desktop like that. Maybe I'll try it in a VM someday for fun.
falsaberN1··on Knoppix
I quickly learned to symlink certain things (usually the least-updated ones) to folders in $HOME, and put together some bash scripting to copy stuff back and forth. By the time I had a replacement disk I was already somewhat fluent. And yeah, hardly ever had to reboot, only when doing radical changes in setup. I remember I was using windowmaker instead of the default KDE 3 after a while, although I don't quite remember the thought process that led me to it.
falsaberN1··on Knoppix
At one point in the very early 2000s my HDD failed and I was diskless for a while. I used Knoppix to be able to run things using a floppy to store my configs. I've been using Linux as daily driver ever since. The necessity to do a trial by fire made me pretty good at it and helped me in my professional life as well.

Thank you Knoppix.

falsaberN1··on Show HN: Putt.day a daily mini golf game
Adorable little game, works very well! In today's hole I found a little shortcut by bouncing back from the starting position into just before the little "house" and managed to complete the hole in 4 shots. I like that such things are possible, feels satisfying.
falsaberN1··on Preparing for KDE Plasma's Last X11-Supported Release
I use LXQt with virtual machines, is it good for using on bare metal too?
falsaberN1··on DIY Bipedal Robot Used Pneumatic "Air-Muscles" Instead of Motors
Makes perfect sense, in nature you have a lot of both practical and odd functionality out of filling "bags" with air or liquid.

This is a pretty cool approach. If they can improve the visual presentation it can also look pretty awesome. Gives me some inspiration for drawing scifi designs too.

falsaberN1··on Preparing for KDE Plasma's Last X11-Supported Release
>The fact that SonicDE's stated mission is to preserve X11 support is itself a warning sign.

Why is it a warning sign? Sounds very useful to keep X11 support for machines that have no good video acceleration like office computers or stuff relying on VNC protocols.

falsaberN1··on Websites have a new way to spy on visitors: analyzing their SSD activity
I got $HOME in a huge HDD because it was cheaper. I guess we belong to the cool kids club now?
falsaberN1··on Pandoc Templates
Oh wow, I use Pandoc fairly extensively, and have my own templates, and I never knew you could make things as colorful as some of these.

Oh no, inspiration has arrived. Guess I know what I'm wasting my weekend into, hah.

Also this page seems to have existed for a while and I never heard of it! I'm glad I stumbled upon this. A lot of nice ideas here.

falsaberN1··on Poll: How often do you check "newest"?
I do the same thing, I never really noticed what submissions are high rank or not, I just come for my own interests.
falsaberN1··on Erin Brockovich made a map to track data centers around the country
People have gotten so intense with the anti-AI sentiment that I hope this doesn't end up guiding people to places where they can exercise violence "for a just cause".
falsaberN1··on Phantasy Star IV – 1993 Developer Interviews
Raise your hand if you got Megid without a guide.

I love Phantasy Star I-IV (except III, mostly everyone agrees it's too flawed and wacky despite some good ideas). I never got into Phantasy Star Online, which is the only game people today seem to be familiar with, though. Is it even related to the original RPGs? I heard 2 has Dark Force as a boss but the events of IV make it...strange. That shouldn't be possible in-universe.

Still, Phantasy Star IV is my favorite and most likely the best RPG on the Megadrive by a long shot. It had good combat, good music, it stayed away from medieval fantasy and generally speaking was full of good vibes (except after the first battle with Zio. If you know you know.).

If you want to replay it there is a randomizer called Profound Distortion that allows to mix things up and I believe it's still in active development.

Anyway, I really loved some of the things it did with enemies like the witches using combined attacks or monsters fusing together like the Dualblade and the Life Deleter. Even today that stuff is rare to see, last game I remember with enemy fusions is Etrian Odyssey V.

I never managed to find the game in a normal shop, but when the local Blockbuster closed up, they happened to have a rental copy that I managed to get. It's still with me.

falsaberN1··on Yoti age checks share facial photos and device fingerprints with third parties
There isn't enough noise about this kinda news.

People need to learn to distrust such systems and exposing failings such as this one is a good way to do it.

We aren't going to be free of this stuff until the average Joe's mom hear of "forced age verification" and associate it to "unsafe".

falsaberN1··on Not alive, but not dead: disembodied human brains used for drug testing
It's not only not been proven, but the island man stuff and testimony of people like Culkin suggest he actually did the opposite of doing bad things to children and was most likely a scapegoat for the "elites" of Hollywood because of his race.

At the very least drop an "allegedly" or something to make it sound a little tasteful.

falsaberN1··on Living human brain cells play DOOM on a CL1 [video]
Hot take here, but I think the version of this experiment that used rat neurons instead of human neurons was more interesting. I can't look for the link right now but there's a video on Youtube, the equipment and techniques are fairly similar.

We know a human can play Doom, so it kind of makes sense a portion of a human brain can do so in some fashion. But it's way more interesting when an animal that normally doesn't play Doom can, specially if it's just a portion of its brain.

Outside of that, I'm personally not very fond of hardware that can rot or die from malnutrition though. It's fun as an experiment, but as a thing you can actually use I just don't see it. It has a literal limited lifespan, requires more maintenance and imagine trying to debug it ("Turns out it caught some bacteria and it's malfunctioning" kinda scenarios? No thanks.)

falsaberN1··on Castlevania and Bloodstained developer Shutaro Ida dies aged 52
We lost another one of the greats. RIP
falsaberN1··on A Pokémon of a Different Color
Maybe people are paying attention to those things because there's a need to disconnect from the real world and its problems for a while.
