fakename··on Instructure pays ransom to Canvas hackers
I'm interested in this, too. I found a tweet[1] listing a wallet address for shinyhunters, but there's only a small transaction from last week: https://www.blockonomics.co/#/search?q=bc1q5530apqz86eywm2f8...

fakename··on Amazon reveals first color Kindle, new Kindle Scribe, and more
I've been buying the kids versions because in the past, it was the ad-free version and came with a free case, but the new kids version seems to have ads if not used in kid mode:

"Will my kid see ads while using this device? Kindle Paperwhite Kids is automatically set up for your kid to enjoy an ad-free experience. However, if you exit Amazon Kids using a passcode, sponsored screensavers will be displayed on the device's lockscreen."

fakename··on How I got scammed on Facebook Marketplace (2023)
I've had the exact same thing happen to me on ebay, FYI.

Bought an A7IV for a very good price. Seller sent a bogus tracking number. After it was delivered to not me, I got USPS to confirm it didn't match my address and got a refund from ebay. It was a pain, and I've learned to never buy from sellers without a reasonable history.

It made me very aware to how many times the best price for an item is from an account with no feedback. Ebay doesn't seem to care about these obvious scams.

fakename··on Bing thinks Hitler was in Radiohead
I've been seeing a lot of weird stuff in bing lately, like: https://imgur.com/a/oF7Y2nX
fakename··on Microsoft Loop Preview
Getting this error constantly: "We couldn't save the Loop page you've created. It will be lost as soon as you refresh. Copy anything you want to keep and paste it somewhere else. Then, please try creating the page again."
fakename··on Do heat pumps work in cold climates?
+1 to this. I had a hpwh installed for my radiant system and after paying >7k to get it up and running, I learned that this model is entirely unsuited to that setup and Rheem refuses to accept a return.

If anyone wants a barely used 120 volt hpwh in the bay area, get in touch.

fakename··on We’re discontinuing the Stablegains service
FYI, for anyone else withdrawing funds:

I requested an ACH withdrawal at 5pm pacific on 5.23 It was processed 13 hours later at 645am on 5.24 The conversion rate I received was 0.03850612745 If you view the UST value during that window, it was worth almost twice that rate on average: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/terrausd/

https://etherscan.io/tx/0x6ae021b3bd9848ade6863820092dcf2844...

Just a warning for anyone expecting to get out with even the value of your UST...

fakename··on We’re discontinuing the Stablegains service
So the options are to withdraw to USD at 5% value, or transfer the ust to another wallet to qualify for a "potential airdrop" but probably lose the 5% as ust goes to 0?
fakename··on Using a "proper" camera as a webcam
camo is great. I was doing what the OP outlines at the beginning of the pandemic with an a6000 and a $10 ebay hdmi capture card. It looked 10% better than camo for 100% more effort.
fakename··on Using a "proper" camera as a webcam
I use a flat piece of cardboard, folded with slots cut for the phone on top, and the monitor on bottom.

I just switched from an old apple cinema display to a modern monitor with small bezels, so I need to cut a new one to stop it from blocking the top of my screen.

fakename··on New MacBook Pro has first ‘DIY-friendly’ battery replacement design since 2012
It's the thing being stretched between the fingers. Like a command strip.

It's one cookie, Michael. What could it cost, $10?
fakename··on Sony cameras can now be used as webcams for Mac
these cheapo hdmi capture cards work great: https://www.ebay.com/itm/HDMI-to-USB2-0-Video-Capture-Card-1...
fakename··on Sony cameras can now be used as webcams for Mac
My camera (the a6000) isn't supported by this software, so I've been very happy with my $12 hdmi capture card, weird proprietary HDMI cable and dummy battery.
fakename··on Google announces Pixel 5, Pixel 4A 5G, and Pixel 4A

fakename··on New 13-inch MacBook Pro
"the first two models are the 8th generation processors whereas the top model (starting at $1799) is the one with the latest 10th generation processors"

I had to double-check this wasn't a typo.

fakename··on I Can No Longer Recommend Google Fi
How are you managing such low data use? I easily burned through 1gb in my first week (partly due to my podcast app downloading 400mb -> me changing the settings -> it downloading 200mb the next day -> me finding the right setting to block it from using mobile data).

I've been keeping mobile data turned off unless I explicitly need to use it. I turned it on last night to google something quickly, and it managed to use 60mb.

Can't wait to go back to mintsim after I satisfy the 4 month requirement from their cyber Monday deal.

fakename··on Whole House Fan and Evaporative Cooler
My condo has a whole house fan, which is rigged up to a wireless remote that the former owner couldn't find. I need to spend twenty minutes setting up a new remote wiring setup, but it's only punishingly hot 2-3 days a year in Oakland, and on those 2-3 days, I know that even if I prime it, the heat will be over by the time the remote arrives, so I never pull the trigger.

Tldr, this is why we need same day voter registration.

fakename··on MacBook Pro with faster performance and new features for pros
mainly interested in this news to learn if they'll start exchanging 2016/17 mbps for this new model. Does the new keyboard require dozens of tiny screws to assemble/dissemble?
fakename··on What Dockless Bikes and Scooters Are Exposing
I'm having a hard time imagining how you could park in a bike lane without blocking bicyclists. "You may park in a bicycle lane if your vehicle does not block a bicyclist and/or there is not a “No Parking” sign posted."
fakename··on Facebook, You Needy Sonofabitch
