failwhaleshark··on Ask HN: Have you found a good desk chair?
Do you happen to have an inversion table and a traction pulley system?
failwhaleshark··on Ask HN: Have you found a good desk chair?
For carpeted floors, good lard get a thick, extra large floor mat. Hard floor casters always.

Leaks are related to worn-out cylinders. They're easy to change. There's nothing wrong with the chair itself unless it's physically-damaged.

failwhaleshark··on Ask HN: Have you found a good desk chair?
6'5 / 240 and I have an Aeron Size B that just baaarely fits. Size C for most people > 5'9" / 175 cm.
failwhaleshark··on Ask HN: Have you found a good desk chair?
Used Aeron Size C. I suggest getting a larger one than you need. Be careful about which vendor if buying online. Try to get one from a local office interior repo reseller, which are typically located in commercial or industrial areas near airports. Test the cartridge before buying by sitting in it for an hour or so to see if it sinks.
failwhaleshark··on Why more women identify as sexually fluid than men
It's good that more people, which includes women, can live how they want now.

I'm a straight, sapio+demisexual (women are pretty, but strangers don't do anything for me), polygynous man with an absurd, irrational sporting interest in piquing interest, foreplay, and seduction, but very rarely closing the bedroom door with an unknown woman or women. I am interested in smart, fun, young (AGR), beauties who tend to be bi or pan, since that's who is also interested in me. I have no qualms about a "steady" girl(s) hitting-on other girl(s), being with other girl(s), or bringing us or me more girl(s); they can go play all they want.

Lot of people hate me for this or that, either jealousy or lifestyle judgements. Fuck them. Live life as it works best for you as long as you're honest with others.

failwhaleshark··on On Depression and Founders
How would that be controlled-for when there are shifts in unskilled and semi-skilled work around the globe, automation, local demographics changes, aging population, increasing densities of people (tending towards depression which also reduces aggression (T)), and massive income inequality increasing the economic stresses on the average person (that alone would kill T in all genders)?

> Can it be affecting the contributions of 50% of the population?

How would this be measured without a duplicate control Earth? Hypothetically: if everyone in sadder areas had as much food and money as they needed to be comfortable, I guarantee T levels would be much higher in men and women, there would be a lot more sex, a lot more happier people, and a lot more babies in 9 months.

> And what would we actually do if we did realize this?

The average person would probably do what they always do: shrug and do nothing. The plutocrats would only care if their top employees weren't performing optimally and would throw more money and/or better conditions at them.

failwhaleshark··on On Depression and Founders
Appeal to authority fallacy, among others.

Lab tests of T are a snapshot in time. T values vary dramatically over the day, but their average values are influenceable.

Feel free to go without sleep, add stress, binge drink, and eat only pizza, and then see how much T remains.

A male-born individual can choose murder their SHGB-unbound T by shunting it into cortisol or estrogen production with lifestyle choices, in addition to genetics, health, and acute conditions, if they want more inflammation, less calm, more anxiety, shorter lives, and less focus.

failwhaleshark··on America should become a nation of renters
? Red herring.

- Tiny houses are personal choices of minimalism.

- Is someone forcing "insects" down your throat?

- Beef bans? No such thing. Animal meat agriculture does need to be banned because of the pandemic, antibiotic resistance, and climate change existential risks.. risks to our continued survival. It will never happen because most people are too dumb, ignorant, and/or lack the self-control to do what's necessary for the long-term survival of the species.

- What the hell is a "climate lockdown?"

A conspiracy theory is a wild, unfounded, imaginary claim. It looks to me you appear to be espousing such nonsense and want it normalized, which is why you don't like the term "conspiracy theory."

failwhaleshark··on America should become a nation of renters
America should become a nation of even more indebted, landless, propertyless, penniless serfs ruled by rent-seeking conglomerates with piles of money.

There, I fixed it for you, Bloomberg.com.

Yes, us simple folk should transactionalize everything in life to be on-demand, at the behest and control of corporations, including love, parenting, small talk, lawnmowers, brooms, staplers, air conditioning, housing, transportation, water, and smiling. And why not oxygen? ("There is absolutely no air shortage whatsoever." Discretely opens a can of Perriair.) Let's just let the corporations own our bodies, lives, and thoughts too, while we're at it. It will all be so magically-convenient with no vulnerabilities or Kafkaesque traps at all!

failwhaleshark··on America should become a nation of renters
Yep. Make everyone into tenant farmers again. The US is almost there: no healthcare unless you work, no job unless you take on piles of debt, income inequality, suppressed wages, and increasing costs of living.

failwhaleshark··on America is turning into a lottery society
"Crumbs of bread for the plebs. They don't know how bad they've got it and let's keep it that way. Legacy is guaranteed for us, but we still have to let in a few scholarship charity cases to keep up appearances." - Plutocrats

America has always been a feudal, caste society, either overtly by location such as modern gated communities, or ubiquitously by speech, mannerisms, interests, and appearances. The other layers are that mainstream America worships certain extremes of celebrity, money, pedigree, power, race, and beauty.

failwhaleshark··on On Depression and Founders
Causing? No. I never said that. Reducing? Yes. It's important if there's an underlying condition causing low T to not lower it even further. Excessive PUFS or omega-3 leads free T to be SHBG-bound. Albumin-bound and free are the only readily, universally bioavailable forms.

If you commit suicide, you throw away all future changes to a different state.

Pedigree filtering is most often myopic elitism, especially in a business context. Anecdotally, I avoided MIT and Harvard because of Boston's snow and traffic. CalTech is Pasadena: too frick'n hot. I didn't study at all for the SAT-I and aced the math section. (The SAT should be more like the JEE.) I went to an expensive, "top 50" public university where I liked the area. Also, it was more practical and rigorous academically than most Pac10s (Pac12s now) and Ivys because they had something to prove (no grade inflation at all, they don't care if you turn in homework or not, not much market for homework and tests, and proctored exams). I also didn't do a PhD because of the economic disincentive: if I put in the work and the cost, I could do an MD, JD, or PhD CS but there is no added benefit.

Most clinical doctors have social skills and crystalized intelligence from domain expertise, but aren't typically mistakable for particle physicists.

People don't necessarily require the proper sheepskins to possess fluid, crystallized, and/or other domains of intelligence AND the skills, personality, and experience relevant to excelling at a particular STEM role.

Pedigree is mostly used for social filtering and business leadership board packing, but if someone wanted to create an elite monoculture of staff, lacking in cognitive and personality diversity, by all means, go right ahead.

PS. I. Don't even get me started about a car full of CS IITians talking about the JEE and high-placers who seem normal on the way to snow country for snowboarding and gambling.

PS. II. I bombed an Apple interview for a mid-career role by being too intelligent and too maverick compared to the group of compliant, I hate to say, yuppies. It was an interview panel of about 9 people and they were just speechless. The other time I bombed an interview for being too smart was about 10 years before that when I was 20 at the old Borders bookstore in Palo Alto. Moral of the story: it's important to play dumb where appropriate because most people are relative-intelligence insecure.

PS. III. Sorry, reader, for the rambling and discontinuous thoughts. Absurd endocrine values of unknown etiology currently... doctor appointments pending. ):

What made me instantly distrust TB was the Publisher's Clearing House-style "you had the best score on our online assessment we've ever seen." C'mon, don't blow smoke up my ass right off-the-bat. If it's that easy, then it needs to be more difficult, broader, and deeper to pre-test candidates with proficiencies in particular areas with questions that are AI-generated: algorithms, data structures, particular languages, operating systems, networking, front-/back-end technologies and tools, software engineering, customer service, team communication common-sense, professional workplace behavior, and engineering ethics.
failwhaleshark··on On Depression and Founders
In bodies with testicles, low T (from a number of possible causes) can be even worse than just depression: inability to concentrate, confusion, alertness, consciousness, memory, anxiety, social, and sleep problems. You don't want this.

Maslow's hierarchy things help: Sleep (where possible), diet, water, exercise (HIIT cardio and weightlifting), get outside, routine, defuse catastrophizing thoughts with reality, and not everything is as hard as it may seem (no mind, grasshoppa).

Avoid: alcohol, walnuts, almonds, soy, licorice root (black licorice candy), mint, certain oils (canola, corn, cottonseed, soybean, flaxseed, sunflower, safflower, palm kernel, "vegetable"), sugar/HFCS, carbs, trans-fats, and excessive omega-3.

Isn't that why most people become police officers and other authority figures? You'll just have to torture living things, wet the bed, and set fires like the rest of us. /s /s /s /s /s

failwhaleshark··on Ask HN: How to get back in employment market after working on side projects?
That is true. HR is told to filter outside of their wheelhouse. This explains A+ certifications and bullshit resumes.

In general: always be extra nice to HR. They are underpaid, under-appreciated, under-loved, put in the middle of every dispute, and told to make the impossible possible. Like IT, but with squishy meat bags.

failwhaleshark··on Ask HN: How to get back in employment market after working on side projects?
I agree. You want the excessively-serious, unpleasant ones to reject you ASAP and the fun ones to warm-up to you.

Unfortunately, I may have mistakenly signed a lease in a yuppie slum in ATX because it was the only large apartment available.

It's an "expensive" (for the area), boring, mixed-use development that gentrified an east side area, abutted right next to I-35 and neglected homeless (who's existence are now illegal thanks to hateful bandaid policies).

And, it appears to be populated mostly by Millenial kidults who live to party hard, act like they're still in high school, got their jobs by lying on their resumes, let their dogs pee and poop in the common hallways, and live like their hedonism is more important than anything or anyone else. I dislike most of them because they resemble Seinfeldian, Kafkaesque caricatures and many offer nothing more than shallow, vapid, shitty, ignorant, infantile %sshole, consumerist, ephemerality manufactured by a steady diet of mass media and screen time.

One woman walks around with one hand in the air like Peg Bundy from Married... with Children but seems like a WASP who works-out and dresses to climb up the next richest pole. She won't even acknowledge my presence with a friendly "hello."
