failuser··on A World Split Apart (1978)
What do you mean people were not allowed to have material things? Joining the party and becoming a part of nomenklatura so you can get western stuff and a Volga was a dream of Soviet citizens. Getting anything, often even food in USSR required a personal connection (blat).
failuser··on DOJ sues realpage for algorithmic pricing scheme that harms renters
You’ll need a construction cooperative. IDK if those can compete with large construction companies due to the economy of scale. The construction cooperatives were a staple of late Soviet and post-Soviet Russia, but were essentially outlawed later to make way for large construction business and mortgages-backed construction.
failuser··on SurrealEngine: Open-source reimplementation of Unreal Engine with playable UT99
You need to find a reason why it would be better than the original or UT2004.
failuser··on PyScript: An open source platform for Python in the browser
Just one more abstraction layer will fix it.
failuser··on Apple's requirements are about to hit creators and fans on Patreon
How much time do we have till Apple blocks addresses of services that provide web apps instead of iOS apps or just crippling web apps altogether even more than they are now?
failuser··on Europe is in danger of regulating its tech market out of existence
I thought that tech companies working in Europe take advantage of Irish/Dutch laws and skip taxes almost entirely. Is that outdated?
failuser··on When the CIA turned writers into operatives
Oil export just prolonged the agony. Soviets could not reform without touching the institutions and could not survive without keeping the institutions intact. Gorbachev was not geriatric, but he was not a right caliber for that job, Soviet system did not produce those.
failuser··on Supreme Court rules ex-presidents have immunity for official acts
Decade? You are optimistic.
failuser··on Supreme Court rules ex-presidents have immunity for official acts
He did not ignore the Supreme Court, he got a court decision and modified the orders according to it.
failuser··on Supreme Court overturns 40-year-old "Chevron deference" doctrine
I can’t help but to read this as “we need a life-long dictator so we will not have to deal with the results of the elections”
failuser··on Sleep deprivation disrupts memory
11PM to 6AM is very different from 1AM to 5AM. Parents of little children who need you to wake up multiple times per night have it worse, IMO. And they often report memory problems and overall mental decline.
failuser··on Land value tax in online games and virtual worlds (2022)
Yes, that sawmill incident was with 16-year-old, but there are more at other industries. E.g. WI regulations were relaxed to allow 14-years-old work 40 hour weeks as well part of the year. If there is not enough pushback fatalities are a matter of time.
failuser··on Sleep deprivation disrupts memory
Why? Do you experience memory issues? If you can do that for years and not go insane or break down you must be built different. I know people like that and envy them, but this is not typical.
failuser··on Land value tax in online games and virtual worlds (2022)
You need to fight for keeping any accomplishments you’ve got. US rolled back many child labor regulations, so we have 14 years old killed by sawmills again. It’s not like the US banned children from mines because it was economically more profitable.
failuser··on AMD CEO Lisa Su reminisces about designing the PS3's infamous Cell processor
It took a decade and it’s still not 100% accurate. By now PS5 is powerful enough, but Sony would rather sell you a remaster or remake.
failuser··on Spam, junk, slop? The latest wave of AI behind the 'zombie internet'
Does google index discord or telegram? I have not seen those in the results.
failuser··on AMD CEO Lisa Su reminisces about designing the PS3's infamous Cell processor
You forget that it was normal before. PS2 had many separate chips you need to program and balance throughout and latencies to make the most of hardware. PS2 was able to achieve 60 fps in many impressive games. Console hardware was very specific, the original Xbox being just an Intel PC was an exception.
failuser··on Spam, junk, slop? The latest wave of AI behind the 'zombie internet'
I wonder if there is a need for wall-piercing search now. That might be against user agreement, but when that had stopped anyone motivated?
failuser··on Boeing's starliner docks at ISS after five thrusters unexpectedly shut off
Boeing used to mean quality. Now it means cutting corners for the sake of stock price and dividends.
failuser··on What if they gave an Industrial Revolution and nobody came? (2023)
Has anyone actually changed positions on global warming since 2008? The same people who called it a communist hoax back then call it a communist hoax now.
failuser··on Microsoft closes several large Bethesda affiliated game studios
How many As does Psychonauts have?
failuser··on Microsoft closes several large Bethesda affiliated game studios
Redfall was the only outright bad one. And it was pretty obvious the specification for the game was bad already.
failuser··on Balaji Srinivasan calls for tech to "exit democracy" and seize local governments
You don’t need to imagine. Just look at some other countries. Look at Russia, for example, it’s even the worst one.

Americans are so spoiled by their state, it can be better, but it can be so much worse.

failuser··on TSMC expects customers to pay more for chips fabbed overseas
Imagine if China starts with blowing up TSMC with long-range weapons. How will the West react if Taiwan no longer has that leverage? Before Russia actually invaded Ukraine I was more optimistic about this.
failuser··on TSMC expects customers to pay more for chips fabbed overseas
Russia did not stop after 3 days, didn’t it? And there is no indication it will stop any time soon. Russia is also old and broke, but it had enough to keep going. And Russia needs to spend a much higher percentage of the GDP on war than China. I’m pretty sure China can take Taiwan if it wants to, I just hope the estimated price will be too high for them to actually pull the trigger.
failuser··on Justice Department to file antitrust suit against Live Nation
Take losses, unseat the current monopolist, take their place.
failuser··on Justice Department to file antitrust suit against Live Nation
I’m talking about someone like a big venture capital fund or a big bank. Or someone like Saudis. That’s a lucrative field. Ironically, any company doing this will want to take the place of monopoly, not increase competition in the long run.
failuser··on Justice Department to file antitrust suit against Live Nation
Potentially, a big player with money to burn can undercut them, but it does not look like that’s going to happen.
failuser··on Justice Department to file antitrust suit against Live Nation
Boeing is not the only airplane manufacturer in US. If you look how it operates, it runs the government’s civil aviation, not the other way around. FAA has basically trusted Boeing to self-certify everything. It looks like without government interventions the only outcome is total monopolization.

It’s really funny that anti-governmental slogans of the ideological fights of the Cold War during which US Government was way more powerful than it was not got into the brains of so many people. As someone who grew up in USSR that’s really funny to observe.

failuser··on The US rich are getting second passports, citing risk of instability
For being ephemeral those allies in the House are very effective at stopping aid to Ukraine.
