fahhem··on ‘I witnessed war crimes’ in Gaza – former worker at GHF aid site [video]
> how else would Gazans eat?

UNRWA, WFP, etc. You know, the ones with decades of experience in Gaza and other war zones with sites, warehouses, and all the other infrastructure necessary to support a population under siege.

fahhem··on Using Bazel to build a new Rust project
In my previous position, we accomplished this using a "dev docker" (which I covered generally in a previous post: https://blog.fahhem.com/2023/12/dev-onboarding-then-now/) that's based around a specific version of Ubuntu (20.04) so the glibc is tied to that.

In another project, I used a hermetic C++ toolchain (you can use gcc with https://github.com/f0rmiga/gcc-toolchain/ or clang/llvm with https://github.com/bazel-contrib/toolchains_llvm) that pulled in its own (locked) version of glibc and lld, etc.

fahhem··on Why curl closes PRs on GitHub
Is the issue just that the commit messages aren't considered important in Github's UI? There's a few tools that do this better, notable Reviewable.io makes the commit message(s) into a virtual file that can be commented on.

Disclosure: I used to work at Reviewable

fahhem··on CADmium: A local-first CAD program built for the browser
The claim that onshape runs in a gpu-enabled AWS instance and 'streams the result' to your browser seems far-fetched. I haven't investigated, but I don't have the best internet connection and onshape isn't laggy like anything else built like that. It's possible the core solvers run elsewhere, but the UI and other interactions are definitely all rendered locally.

Just this week I went on a trip and forgot how I set the battery to not charge 100%. Now I know it was in the BIOS and that I will be able to change it without a restart soon.

Anyone know if there's any GUI or CLI tools for these parameters or should I stick to echo/cat?

fahhem··on VideoLAN unable to update VLC on Android
It seems another design could have been used, that would likely have been more work but wouldn't rely on getting private signing keys.

For instance, the OS could have a carve out for these shims that allows a Google-signed app to overwrite an app, but without access to its local data. Then that overriding app could delete itself when the original is re-downloaded.

I can't tell if this was created before or after all the Examples shown? It feels like people 'invented' this, then this website wrote down the implicit standard everyone already converged on.
fahhem··on Dev onboarding, then and now
What would you recommend onboarding to a new project entail? Studying thousands of lines of code before doing anything? Should they study containerd or just the docker CLI?
fahhem··on Dev onboarding, then and now
You're right, though I didn't mean just the editing latency. For web projects, the latency is now between me and some dev server in the cloud vs localhost, and for CLI as well. For GUIs or anything that interacts with my OS (such as "applets") or my hardware devices now I have to download the program to test it.

For web projects, I understand that latency should be considered, but I've learned what's important there and don't want to build/compile/minify my projects in development so I'm wasting time downloading the same MB's of JS over and over when only a few bytes changed so I'm not getting cache hits.

fahhem··on Dev onboarding, then and now
Yes, it is, but I don't think there's a productive world in which new engineers don't onboard by running commands blindly based on a doc somewhere. I just want a world where those commands reliably work with very few host dependencies. With devpod, I think we're close (only 1 dep that's statically built and docker engine)
fahhem··on Dev onboarding, then and now
Ah, I never considered running it remotely. I'm not onboard the 'dev in the cloud' train, mainly because of round trip latency
fahhem··on Dev onboarding, then and now
Which command do I not understand? Devpod.sh is open source, and while I'm not a master of Go personally I can tell it's basically running docker commands for me. Should I not run docker itself without reading the source code too?
fahhem··on Dev onboarding, then and now
Looking at my ssh config, devpod injected a Host and that's it there's nothing extra in the container. Instead, there's a ProxyCommand that runs devpod, which probably ends up in a docker exec somewhere. That's why you're having trouble with newline and larger terminals, I used to as well because the terminal escape codes for resizing weren't getting through to the shell inside the container.

In the past, I had to resize the terminal once manually after execing in, but I think either docker or bash or something in the chain got an update in the past few years that fixed it to automatically work

fahhem··on Dev onboarding, then and now
I avoid IDE specific workflows, that's why I'm using devpod. As a result, I can 'ssh' into the container from anywhere, or docker exec, and build automation just gets a 'docker exec' shoved in front of every command
fahhem··on Dev onboarding, then and now
Haha, yeah, but I've been using them for years and it's only now getting easier than writing really long scripts over and over again
fahhem··on Dev onboarding, then and now
Seems like you got bit by VS Code, which is why I avoided that dep too. Try devpod.sh, it's independent, has a cli that's working great for me, and you can 'ssh' into the container from your terminal so you don't need VS Code's terminal
fahhem··on Dev onboarding, then and now
Author here. I'll try to clarify in the post, but I'm not locked into VS Code, I'm using devpod.sh which is independent of VS Code.
fahhem··on 'Like we were lesser humans': Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture
This is a common talking point, but Israel never once offered a real two state solution. All offers had a "poison pill" that they knew would get rejected, but they offered it for this exact talking point, to say they offered peace.

If you look up the actual offers and the negotiations around them, you'll see none of them even abided by international law, so they would have been illegal anyway.

fahhem··on 'Like we were lesser humans': Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture
There is no evidence to that claim. One baby was killed on Oct 7th, which is horrible, but it was not in an oven, not in a pregnant woman, nor beheaded.

fahhem··on The pro-Israel information war
It's well-known in these areas that these sales are done through ships in the Mediterranean. The same US warship that captured the Somalis last week (initially they claimed to have caught Yemenis) could be focusing on those ships that take off from Turkish ports instead (or, really, in addition)
fahhem··on The pro-Israel information war
That report is based on policing the likes and shares in social media accounts of teachers, not on what they taught the children or what they themselves did or wrote.

Imagine that was done here (in the US), those teachers might get a talking to, but nobody would buy that they're teaching hate unless students or observers say something.

If someone were to scrub your social media accounts, would they find 0 likes or shares of 'hateful content'? Depending on who you follow, that could be anything from sharing videos of the IDF's attacks, Hamas' attacks, Likud's charter, or even some dude that edited their viral post to inject something positive about Mein Kampf
