internet creature, slop detractor

faefox··on An update on Wayback Machine access
Yes, anything that potentially costs Elon Musk money is objectively a good thing. :)
faefox··on An update on Wayback Machine access
Yeah, who does the Internet Archive think it is, (insert literally any AI company here)?
faefox··on The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
This couldn't be further from the truth. The indie web was exciting because it was the product of distinct human voices. LLMs only speak in one voice (with subtle differences between the major models but similar "tells"). This is why so many people have such an immediate and visceral negative reaction to AI slop. It is distinctly lacking the human spark and it is uncanny and off-putting in that way.
faefox··on Omarchy Histerya
What I always find interesting is how folks like DHH love to cloak themselves in righteousness saying they're making a place away from "those people" where everyone can feel welcome "regardless of their beliefs." Beliefs like what, DHH? Why not just come out and say what you mean if it's nothing to be ashamed of?
faefox··on Adults over 65 will outnumber children by 2029
Or maybe societies could instead make the prospect of having children less onerous? It's not an uncommon story in America that a couple will choose to stay unmarried when having children so that the mother can qualify for benefits like childcare (which, if you haven't had children yourself, is staggeringly expensive when it's available at all).

To think that the solution here is to penalize women even more is insane.

faefox··on U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio reaches 123%
AI industry profits have and will continue to be privatized while the enormous costs of job displacement (to name just one of many negative externalities) will be gleefully socialized. We've seen this film before.
faefox··on Advertise in ChatGPT
Praying that this means the bubble is finally (inevitably) beginning to burst.
faefox··on Briar is in maintenance mode
Give that a try and let us all know how it goes. :)
faefox··on TypeScript 7
Fine, the Hank Green.
faefox··on Moving away from Tailwind, and learning to structure my CSS
Tailwind is just CSS so there's no lock-in to speak of and no migration necessary. If you had a specific instance where Tailwind wasn't a good fit you can just hand-write as needed.

Sure, if you wanted to stop using Tailwind altogether you would have a lot of rewriting to do but I'm not sure how that's uniquely different or worse than, say, migrating a project from React to Angular.

faefox··on Screenshots of Old Desktop OSes
The BeOS aesthetic has aged so well. I'll always wonder what might've been had they not been deliberately smothered in the crib (or at the very least if Apple had chosen to acquire them).
faefox··on US inflation jumps to 3.8% as energy costs surge from Iran war
You can save a lot of time and just say you're voting for the current regime because that's exactly what "throwing your ballot in the trash" accomplishes.
faefox··on EFF is leaving X
You can tell conservative opinions are censored and suppressed by the way they're constantly shoved down our throats every hour of every day.
faefox··on Škoda DuoBell: A bicycle bell that penetrates noise-cancelling headphones
Running with ANC headphones on is like driving with your eyes closed. Safety is a two-way street and it's everyone's responsibility to maintain a basic level of situational awareness.
faefox··on An AI agent published a hit piece on me
Really starting to feel like I'll need to look for an offramp from this industry in the next couple of years if not sooner. I have nothing in common with the folks who would happily become (and are happily becoming) AI slop farmers.
faefox··on Bitcoin tumbles below $70k, wiping out gains since Trump 2024 win
It's a speculative instrument useful for enabling criminal activity and not much else.
faefox··on Anthropic is Down
No big deal for people who know how to do their job.
faefox··on Tesla Full Self Driving subscription to rise alongside its capabilities
You just know Elon could announce that product, call it "GoldX" and sell millions overnight. He never seems to run out of greater fools.
faefox··on Tesla fined for repeatedly failing to help UK police over driving offences
They're sort of damned if they do and damned if they don't, aren't they? If they make traffic stops for speeding people will moan about how they're just trying to meet quotas or ask why they aren't going after "real criminals."

People just want to drive irresponsibly and they will invent any reason to justify why they're the victim, actually.

faefox··on eBay explicitly bans AI "buy for me" agents in user agreement update
Why not share your own thoughts rather than this LLM slop? Or maybe this is just a bot account. Either way, disappointing to see on HN.
faefox··on Scott Adams has died
I wouldn't expect to hear back. GP is either a troll or a cultist or both.
faefox··on Scott Adams has died
Maybe you could share some of his well-reasoned positions with us, then? :)
faefox··on Scott Adams has died
Social media is a poison and Mr. Adams drank deep from the well. It's a shame.
faefox··on Public Sans – A strong, neutral typeface
God, I was so hopeful that you were joking but I guess I should know better by now.
faefox··on AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D sells for more than 9800X3D, enthusiasts flock to AM4 DDR4
It may seem cute but economies only do this when they are very stressed.
faefox··on I'm Kenyan. I don't write like ChatGPT, ChatGPT writes like me
Ironic, given Sam Altman's entire fortune and business model is predicated on the infantilization of humanity.
faefox··on Framework Raises DDR5 Memory Prices by 50% for DIY Laptops
Late-stage capitalism in action. We have companies that are so insanely rich (despite losing equally insane amounts of money) that they can single-handedly corner worldwide markets for critical components in a brazen attempt to hurt the competition, and nobody will do a single thing about it.
faefox··on When UPS charged me a $684 tariff on $355 of vintage computer parts
This is your daily reminder that tariffs are a tax on American consumers and are NOT paid by the country the tariffs are imposed on, no matter how desperately the current administration might try to convince you otherwise.
faefox··on Grammarly rebrands to 'Superhuman,' launches a new AI assistant
A great tool if you want your own unique voice to blend seamlessly into the tidal wave of LLM-generated mush flooding the internet.
faefox··on PSF has withdrawn $1.5M proposal to US Government grant program
God, it is so humiliating to be an American these days. :(
