Haha, as a long time Apple user trying to get out, these are kind of things that makes it leaving Apple so hard!
factormeta··on AWS staff spending ‘much of their time ’optimizing customers' clouds'
Hmm, don't think that applies all the time. Herznet is way cheaper than AWS, and in most cases, I don't know why companies won't use it instead of AWS. The only reason people use it from what I know is that helps them with the next job, because everyone is using AWS. Kinda feels like ms and oracle in the 90's.
factormeta··on FCC warns Portland church to shut down pirate FM operating under its steeple
>Radio is available for use for everyone with proper licensing and certification; there's even a block of frequencies reserved for amateur use (read: ham radio).

yeah, but it is not legal to encrypt the ham radio traffic, kinda defeats the whole point of having a frequency for DIY usage.

factormeta··on PWAs in App Stores
and App Store distribution comes with quite bit money. Regular user seems to more comfortable to just download from app store type of places.
factormeta··on Unpredictable black boxes are terrible interfaces
Also keep in mind that your google query is bubbled, may be your search query is better than your colleagues because of your search history etc.

factormeta··on We need a more sophisticated debate about AI
one of the sibling thread mentioned: >- The training set is inherently biased; human knowledge and perspectives not represented in this set could be systematically wiped from public discourse.

What you are saying make sense. I find internet to be a great place to find tech stuff, not so much others. Of course this also make sense, internet very much represent a certain group of people who are tech savy, or good at publishing stuff on the web.

>Which is always a risk in that system, but not in liberal democracies. No, you just get arrested by the authorities, and later committed suicide before the trial.
factormeta··on Show HN: Open AI is not Open – A browser extension
>openAI is just a parlour trick to milk cash from corpulent tech giants clawing desperately at the next big thing that might differentiate them from competitors that they may continue to remain relevant for at least another quarter in a recession

Glad someone said it.

Isn't software industry in general that? More a fashion industry than technology?

factormeta··on Mostly adequate guide to FP (in JavaScript)
>I can’t tell you how many times I see “can’t call function toLowerCase of undefined”, etc.

Think that should be addressed by optional chaining now.

factormeta··on Web fingerprinting is worse than I thought
We need 2 classes of web. One for document based that doesn't require JS to run (secure). Insecure, all the SPA and anything that require JS to see the full content.
factormeta··on The dark defaults of Microsoft Edge
I do think the Apple user experience is better, and the hardware is much better designed. I switched from Apple to Linux several times, and really know the difference, but when it comes to privacy, Apple and MS just can't be Linux/*BSD variant (I do know it is not for everyone).
factormeta··on Libgsqlite: A SQLite extension which loads a Google Sheet as a virtual table
That is along is already great! Could be a way to slowly migrate off google spread sheets.
factormeta··on Reasons a Raspberry Pi Belongs in Your Network Lab
or get beagleboard or other open source hardware alternative. Why isn't all hardware open source (without out firmware blob)
factormeta··on Server stats say movetodon.org reached a new record of 49k users yesterday
We ought to distinguish between Mastodon not scaling with Fediverse doesn't scale. I mean Email seems to be working relatively fine. It seems to all comes down to implementation of the protocol.

While I love writing Ruby (what Mastodon seems to be mostly is build with) it's syntax and cleanliness, it always had an issue with scaling.

factormeta··on Server stats say movetodon.org reached a new record of 49k users yesterday
hmmm didn't know Tumblr was planning on doing that. Any more info on this?
factormeta··on Premium .dev domain with Google costs $850
when is the agreement up? We really ought to tell ICANN to not do that. There should be domains that can owned for every as long as we pay the fee.
