fabianhjr··on Cargo theft, led by food and beverage, is surging across the U.S.
Some even end up going big and steal from banks/investors but that is a bigger no-no. ( FTX, Theranos, WireCard, Frank, WeWork, etc )
fabianhjr··on Cargo theft, led by food and beverage, is surging across the U.S.
The same reason the media doesn't focus on the biggest theft category: wage theft.

It is easier to vilify individuals than to reduce the need for food theft (depressed wages and lack of economic opportunities for most people)

fabianhjr··on Society's Technical Debt and Software's Gutenberg Moment
I disagree on the effect, ChatGPT / CoPilot is making it cheaper to produce more lines of code as a solution instead of requiring better understood and tested abstractions.

I believe this will cause an increase on the trend of technical debt.

There are several talks/papers/blogs on lines of code being a cost/liability and not a product/asset. (this blog post seems to assume the inverse)

fabianhjr··on March 20 ChatGPT outage: Here’s what happened
Root cause analysis would likely also include the lack of threat modeling / security evaluation of their dependencies

Would likely also question the lack of resources allocated to these open source projects by companies with a lot of profits from, in part, using those open source projects.

fabianhjr··on March 20 ChatGPT outage: Here’s what happened
Open source can be fixed as if it was your own code. (And that is a strong tenant of free/open source software)

Not only do most open/free source libraries come without support agreements: they come with the broadest possible limitation of warranties. (As they should)

So the company, knowing that what they are using comes without any warranty either of quality or fitness to the use-case, have a very strong burden of due diligence / vetting.

fabianhjr··on Noncompete clauses: Companies say they need them, research shows that’s not true

And along with the GOP are working to remove those laws/restrictions.

fabianhjr··on Xiaomi has been in violation of GPL for years
Also in China and in both cases cross-border / international enforcement is so expensive it is non-existent for open source/free software.

Neither do many US-based companies.

fabianhjr··on The EU's new Cyber Resilience Act is about to tell us how to code
Article 6, Numeral 2 "In determining the level of cybersecurity risk, one or several of the following criteria shall be taken into account" seems very reasonable in scope and wouldn't include most open source/free software.
fabianhjr··on The EU's new Cyber Resilience Act is about to tell us how to code
Adoption of open source, most open source licenses already come with broad waivers so compliance would fall mostly on the adopters.
fabianhjr··on LastPass says DevOps engineer’s hacked computer led to security breach in 2022
That wouldn´t help with a malware scenario.

A Hardware Security Module would avoid exfiltration of secrets.

fabianhjr··on Keep your AI claims in check

This message is not new. Advertisers should take another look at our earlier AI guidance, which focused on fairness and equity but also said, clearly, not to overpromise what your algorithm or AI-based tool can deliver. Whatever it can or can’t do, AI is important, and so are the claims you make about it. You don’t need a machine to predict what the FTC might do when those claims are unsupported.
Really great and ominous closing paragraph.

fabianhjr··on There’s no such thing as affordable housing
By reducing instances of private equity firms buying all housing stock en masse and "maximizing profit" by squeezing every last cent their tenants could give.

Example: https://www.propublica.org/article/when-private-equity-becom...

Also Adam Smith has a lot of rants against rent seeking behavior and landlords if you want to go with that "communist" writing.

> The rent of land, therefore, considered as the price paid for the use of the land, is naturally a monopoly price. It is not at all proportioned to what the landlord may have laid out upon the improvement of the land, or to what he can afford to take; but to what the farmer can afford to give

Funnily enough, check how far back the 1/3 income for rent comes from and the context on which it is mentioned:

> The rent of an estate above ground commonly amounts to what is supposed to be a third of the gross produce; and it is generally a rent certain and independent of the occasional variations in the crop. [..] This rent “is seldom less than a fourth ... of the whole produce.”

fabianhjr··on Blizzard manager departs in protest of employee ranking system
The US government is more than happy to sabotage the rest of the world to retain just a bit longer their crumbling dominant position. (And those are closer to assasinations, coup d'etats, and economic warfare)
fabianhjr··on Blizzard manager departs in protest of employee ranking system
s/companies/worker cooperatives/

If one wants to escape a corporate hellhole no sense in starting another one.

Additionally no need to start from scratch. Just joining an existing worker cooperative would be a radical improvement over non-equity employment.

fabianhjr··on My husband was right about DVDs
For example Final Space got cancelled and while the last season was available on streaming services the physical copy hadn't been released and was also cancelled. (So it is a webrip, got pulled from streaming services)

fabianhjr··on We’ve filed a lawsuit challenging Stable Diffusion
Lord Byron (father of Ada Lovelace) defended the Luddites quite succinctly back then and it is as applicable today: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/byron-was-one-few-...

"But the police, however useless, were by no means idle: several notorious delinquents had been detected; men liable to conviction, on the clearest evidence, of the capital crime of poverty; men, who had been nefariously guilty of lawfully begetting several children, whom, thanks to the times!—they were unable to maintain. Considerable injury has been done to the proprietors of the improved frames. These machines were to them an advantage, inasmuch as they superseded the necessity of employing a number of workmen, who were left in consequence to starve. By the adoption of one species of frame in particular, one man performed the work of many, and the superfluous labourers were thrown out of employment."

..

"The rejected workmen, in the blindness of their ignorance, instead of rejoicing at these improvements in arts so beneficial to mankind, conceived themselves to be sacrificed to improvements in mechanism. In the foolishness of their hearts, they imagined that the maintenance and well doing of the industrious poor, were objects of greater consequence than the enrichment of a few individuals by any improvement in the implements of trade which threw the workmen out of employment, and rendered the labourer unworthy of his hire. And, it must be confessed, that although the adoption of the enlarged machinery, in that state of our commerce which the country once boasted, might have been beneficial to the master without being detrimental to the servant;"

..

"These men never destroyed their looms till they were become useless, worse than useless; till they were become actual impediments to their exertions in obtaining their daily bread. Can you then wonder, that in times like these, when bankruptcy, convicted fraud, and imputed felony, are found in a station not far beneath that of your Lordships, the lowest, though once most useful portion of the people, should forget their duty in their distresses, and become only less guilty than one of their representatives? But while the exalted offender can find means to baffle the law, new capital punishments must be devised, new snares of death must be spread, for the wretched mechanic who is famished into guilt. These men were willing to dig, but the spade was in other hands; they were not ashamed to beg, but there was none to relieve them. Their own means of subsistence were cut off; all other employments pre-occupied; and their excesses, however to be deplored and condemned, can hardly be the subject of surprise."

..

"The present measure will, indeed, pluck it from the sheath; yet had proper meetings been held in the earlier stages of these riots,—had the grievances of these men and their masters (for they also have had their grievances) been fairly weighed and justly examined, I do think that means might have been devised to restore these workmen to their avocations, and tranquillity to the country."

A good book on why those capitalist Platforms are hiring and investing a lot on becoming "the most perfect platform" is Nick Srnicek's Pltaform Capitalism ( https://www.wiley.com/en-us/Platform+Capitalism-p-9781509504... )

Most of their profitability comes from becoming a de facto monopoly / middle-man so they will attempt to gain as much market share as aggressively as possible. (Including sacrificing present profitability, giving away money for free rides/things, etc)

It is not a technical necessity but an economic venture capital necessity.

fabianhjr··on FTC cracks down on companies that impose harmful noncompete restrictions
Probably more via underfunding and civil servants wanting to focus on those that need it most.

fabianhjr··on Sergey Brin: Irate Call from Steve Jobs
And that is in the infamous anti-worker US; though I think you meant unenforceable (the companies wouldn't be able to use the legal system to enforce them)

In the rest of the world Steve Jobs / Apple would have been in a bigger trouble just from the start of the emails.

fabianhjr··on Wells Fargo to pay $3.7B for mistreating customers
What do you mean broken up?

It should be seized and either converted into a credit union (give ownership to the affected people) or a state run non-profit banking service. (And also implement the proposals for the postal service to offer banking services)

That would avoid both a lot of smaller wells fargos doing worse things and further financial damage to the economy, clients, and workers of splitting up a private company.

Why not pre/post electric Lada of the 1980s and associated R&D?

https://www.reckontalk.com/electro-russian-tesla-first-elect...

The biggest manufacturer of electric cars worldwide is BYD

The biggest driver of sales (trough public policy) has been China and Europe, including things like announcing bans of ICE in city centers/cities:

https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Electric_car_use_by_country

Tesla started as a luxury brand (Roadster and then luxury sedans) and the only innovation they have managed is name recognition; even the adoption they have driven in the US has been mostly trough public policy like tax incentives.

fabianhjr··on Be wary of imitating high-status people who can afford to countersignal
> repeated attempts / not giving up

Being able to afford that wouldn't be lucky, it would imply some sort of per-existing wealth or at least a solid support network.

fabianhjr··on Show HN: Web search using a ChatGPT-like model that can cite its sources
One of the four factors is market impact which in this case would likely fail.

In the words of ChatGPT:

> When determining the potential impact on the market for the original work, courts will consider whether the use of the copyrighted material is likely to harm the market for the original work. This may include whether the use of the copyrighted material would compete with the original work, such as if it is used as a substitute for the original work or if it would reduce the demand for the original work.

As such this is at least not clearly a fair use case. (And arguably quite possibly a not fair use case)
