f38zf5vdt··on New Twitter Policy May Be More Terrifying Than Mass Suspension of Journalists
Paid downvoting has interesting incentives problems. For example, it's very attractive to foreign adversaries who want to amplify their own content via exclusion, or remove content they deem contra to their interests. These are issues with downvoting in general, but tying it to cash promotes the voices the with the most money.

This is the sort of thing that Elon rails against the mass media doing.

f38zf5vdt··on New Twitter Policy May Be More Terrifying Than Mass Suspension of Journalists
I am thankful it hasn't allowed you to buy downvotes (yet).
f38zf5vdt··on New Twitter Policy May Be More Terrifying Than Mass Suspension of Journalists
This is about the new Twitter policy of letting people pay to remove content from trending and high visibility portions of the site. The feature is that if an account that paid $8 a month, it has the ability to downvote your post's visibility.
f38zf5vdt··on Twitter's rules and policies now forbid live location information sharing
Ironically, if Elon had simply put "no one is allowed to track the private jets of my friends and I on my platform" into the rules and policies it would be a lot more straightforward. I'm not sure there's a word or phrase in English for "making something worse while trying to save embarrassment", but Elon is defining it.

f38zf5vdt··on Fusion energy breakthrough by Livermore Lab
How many times have you or literally anyone you know achieved a state of the art breakthrough in the production of energy from a nuclear fusion reactor? Is this just another Monday to you?
f38zf5vdt··on EU-wide maximum limit of €10K for cash payments
At the current pace of inflation, in 20 years €10k won't even pay a month's rent for a house or decent flat. Demonetization laws with fixed monetary amounts under inflationary systems are tyrannical.
f38zf5vdt··on It’s not Tourette’s but a new type of mass sociogenic illness
Lost to follow up is not necessarily discontinuation of treatment is the issue. The person may have moved out of state or out of country, or simply have moved to be treated by a different physician. Consider also the perspective of the detransitioning person: in trying to reconcile their experience, they project that there must be more people out there like themselves and point to a known unknown to justify it.
f38zf5vdt··on It’s not Tourette’s but a new type of mass sociogenic illness
The number of individuals failing to follow up on a study or even treatment for any disease at the same medical office is high, for example it's approximately 50% for _cancer_. [1] You're welcome to extrapolate to your own taste, but it's still simply an unknown -- unlike the people you _do_ have data for.

f38zf5vdt··on It’s not Tourette’s but a new type of mass sociogenic illness
I don't see anything to support this in the literature. The overwhelming majority (94-98%) of youth who transition maintain their gender identity many years later as adults. [1][2] It's hard to imagine they would continue treatment if it was making them miserable.

The FBI is investigating after a right wing extremist appeared to take responsibility for the attack, with the intention of disrupting a local transgender event. [1]

f38zf5vdt··on America’s syringe exchanges kill drug users
There is only one hospitable planet. Observe how we have treated it.
f38zf5vdt··on America’s syringe exchanges kill drug users
There is a reason economics is called "the dismal science". Most resources on the planet are finite and their consumption is a zero-sum game. If one less drug addict means having the public resources to supply one more diabetic child with life-saving insulin, which would you choose?
f38zf5vdt··on America’s syringe exchanges kill drug users
In terms of burdening the already dysfunctional healthcare and criminal justice systems of the US, it sounds like it works great. If the junkies no longer exist and less frequently get HIV, their cost to society is less than if they were alive, disease spreading, and committing crime.
f38zf5vdt··on Ask HN: What are the implications of Hacker News alt accounts being revealed?
It's a text to text model. You train it on a sentence from the user phrased differently against their real sentence. Then you can write what you want, and the transformer alters the style to match another identity.

f38zf5vdt··on Ask HN: What are the implications of Hacker News alt accounts being revealed?
I finetuned T5, a text-to-text transformer, with a loss function based on the cosine similarity of any given text with statements made by individual HN users. It's like Dreambooth but for text. I have been posting under 40 different alt accounts that approximate the top users of this site textually and match them within an 80th percentile. AMA.

FWIW There are a number of right wing extremist Lemmy instances (https://wolfballs.com/, https://ovarit.com/, previously https://thedonald.win).

f38zf5vdt··on Teaching AI advanced mathematical reasoning
I had figured that ML would make one of the biggest splashes in maths, being that the field is applied pattern finding.
f38zf5vdt··on Musk Denies Report He Spoke with Putin Before Peace Tweets
This might be an attempt at damage and narrative control. The statements made on Twitter reflect recent RT propaganda disseminated directly from the Russian government. For Musk to have independently nailed all of these talking points as if RT was directly using his account was bizarre as an onlooker over the past week.

> In his most recent note, Bremmer said Musk had told him about two weeks earlier that he’d discussed with Putin the president’s minimum requirements for ending the war. Those conditions, which mirrored the proposals Musk put forward in his tweets on Oct. 3, included Ukraine ceding Crimea, accepting a formal state of neutrality and recognizing Russia’s annexation of Luhansk and Donetsk.

f38zf5vdt··on Elon Musk Spoke to Putin Before Tweeting Ukraine Peace Plan
IANAL but a potential violation of 18 U.S. Code §953 and maybe even Section 612(a) of FARA too? Did he not even bother consulting an attorney before attempting to barter international "peace" deals?

Edit:

18 U.S. Code §953 Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

FARA 612(a) mandates that anyone acting on the behalf of or advocating for a foreign government must register with the feds. Michael Flynn had been nailed on this one.

f38zf5vdt··on Private Prisons Are Behind the Push for Homeless Criminalization
The government doesn't tax them here. They're free, because the cost of the drugs is less than the cost of the crime prevented by just giving them out.
f38zf5vdt··on Private Prisons Are Behind the Push for Homeless Criminalization
Legal state level, illegal federal and global means that there is a high incentive for diversion to both other states and other countries. There's a difference between going to a medical facility every day to get a 1-3 day supply and a free-for-all with drugs being handed out for $5 on every corner.
f38zf5vdt··on Private Prisons Are Behind the Push for Homeless Criminalization
It's been the opposite experience for me, but where I lived doctors just give the addicts drugs that are similar to their drugs of choice. Man has to eat, addicts has to use. When you ruin the market economy around drugs by making them essentially free the criminal aspects seem to disappear.
f38zf5vdt··on A Cheap 2.5GbE PoE Unmanaged Switch
It depends on your jurisdiction. Some products fall under the Consumer Product Safety Act, others falls under different regulations. In Canada marks are required, in the US it depends on where you are and where you're installing it e.g. is it for home use or a hospital's internal network?

https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/10639/is-ul-...

If your house burns down using an uncertified product, your insurance company may not also cover the claim. Personally I prefer to run electronics that I know are tested to not burn down my house or electrocute my children when they fail.

f38zf5vdt··on A Cheap 2.5GbE PoE Unmanaged Switch
It's CE certified which is something that Chinese companies print on everything, since it's a self-certification process. UL/ETL require you to do failure mode testing and provide detailed schematics of your equipment for review, and costs quite a bit of cash to get done.
f38zf5vdt··on A Cheap 2.5GbE PoE Unmanaged Switch
It's so cheap because it comes with a power supply that doesn't have a UL or ETL certification, and as such could not be legally sold in North America. A decent quality power supply that could output 125 W would be around $50-70. You get what you pay for.
