f137··on New Casio F-B100W – Upgrade to the iconic F-91W after 40 years
Great. Now, please re-release nokia 3310
f137··on World Capitals Voronoi
Suppose right before this re-bordering takes place, the countries are given the chance to change the capitals' location. Suppose further that they all do it to maximize the area after re-bordering.

I wonder how much the result will differ?

f137··on Tracing a powerful GNSS interference source over Europe
I do not see any discussion of the power required for such wide-area jamming. Even as the useful GPS signal is quite weak at the ground level, this satellite would require power in kW range, right?
f137··on So Bright the Vision by Simak (1956)
Probably one of the earliest predictions of writers being replaced by technology?
f137··on Mazda suitcase car, a portable three-wheeled vehicle that fits in the luggage
OK, but how do I load a suitcase on this thing?
f137··on Ships are sailing with fake insurance from the Norwegian Ro Marine
I'm doubly baffled by this story.

First, when I buy mandatory car insurance, police can check its validity in seconds. I'd expect international shipping to be at least at that level of strictness.

Second, how insurance can help avoid sanctions? The enforcement should look at the goods source and destination, not on who insured them, right?

Something seems to be wrong...

f137··on Trade in War
The article is a bit ambiguous. It mentions "trade via neutrals" in passing, and it is not clear if all or most of examples are trading through neutral states (whether knowingly or not).
f137··on The contrarian physics podcast subculture
This is a very good summary of the evolution of her writings and videos. Unfortunately it seems many many people still see her as the best source of scientific truth.
f137··on Optimizing my sleep around Claude usage limits
How many people would click on a "Using multiply Claude accounts to get more code" post?
f137··on Show HN: Citadel – a Calibre-compatible eBook management app
All Kindles I had (the latest is paperwhite from 2020 or so) mounted on USB as mass storage and supported pdf. They also supported epub since 2014 at least.
f137··on Casino-like apps have drained people of millions
Diner Dash was made by PlayFirst, BFG and many other game download portals were selling it (Windows PC version)
f137··on Anti-AI Hype LLM Reading List
"Anti-hype LLM reading list" - this is the actual title of the github page.

"Anti-AI Hype" seems to be a very bad editorializing. It corrupts the meaning of the title, and makes it ambiguous.

f137··on Poland’s ‘anti-vampire’ graves
Poland was right next to Romania up until 1939.
f137··on A copywriter swindled victims out of $200M by pretending to be a psychic
If you look at it and pay for it, sure it's legal, no?
f137··on Gandi.net – Pricing Update
Do you happen to know what are Grilles / Grids in the price list?
f137··on Gandi.net – Pricing Update
FWIW, "Pricing Update" is literally the subject of the email they sent today.
f137··on Understanding GPT tokenizers
I've run across a paper "Bytes is all you need" or the like a few days ago. Probably something you'd like to read
f137··on 'Oumuamua: An analysis of the debate regarding the first interstellar visitor
> Open Access in DiVA > fulltext(1312 kB) > 0 downloads

well... either their counter is broken, or nobody needs to read the article to take part in our fruitful discussion

f137··on A Tale of Two Feet
Non-native speaker being curious: do we need to use plural with fractions less than one?

Is it 1/2 foot or 1/2 feet?

f137··on How long would society last during a total grid collapse?
Your Kyiv teacher is lucky. Blackouts vary a lot between regions and even within a single town. We have a distributed team and track blackouts in daytime, 8am-8pm. A couple of people had no blackouts so far whatsoever, a few had about 40 hours off out of 60 last workweek. The median is somewhere between 25-30. It is getting worse gradually.
f137··on The erasure of women from online pregnancy literature
This article is for paying subscribers only.

It baffles me. Do people wish to pay to read stuff like that? I mean, what the point to write a polemic article and severely limit the access to it?

f137··on TikTok tracks you across the web, even if you don’t use the app
> The Arizona Department of Economic Security tells TikTok when you view > pages concerned with domestic violence or food assistance.

I mean, I understand a random site doing this sh*t, but this is a gov agency, right? What the hell any ad tracking is doing there?

f137··on Deep Learning Papers Are Kinda Bullsh-T
Collecting the data is costly. I don't believe we will see many private datasets openly released.
f137··on Ask HN: Apple Appstore blocks payouts to Ukraine?
I agree that they may have no control. However they also flatly deny any information on what may have gone wrong - and bank wires hardly ever fail silently. So they definitely have some info, but have no desire to cooperate.
f137··on Your app is not compliant with Google Play Policies: A story from hell
Until recently the limit was 35, and 50 earlier still.

Google enforces new limits on app updates, so this game was not updated recently.

f137··on Kolmogorov Complicity and the Parable of Lightning (2017)
So, you basically say he was wrong to state his opinion openly.

> I really, really wonder what would have happened if he'd sought out diverse co-authors.

I wonder too what would have happened if Jesus sought out diverse co-authors for his teachings.

f137··on AI movie posters
Indeed. The only one I've got right
