eyeinthepyramid··on Learning not to trust the All-In podcast
Are we supposed to deal in good faith with people who believe things for which there is no evidence? Some people also believe in a flat Earth.
eyeinthepyramid··on Proof of work is temporarily illegal in New York
Why not two committees and a head of state?
eyeinthepyramid··on Jeff Varasano's NY Pizza Recipe (2008)
Lucali also rolls the dough, which upsets some purists, but they make a great pie
eyeinthepyramid··on Show HN: Tomatotree.tv – Find your next series to watch using Rotten Tomatoes
Do you have an agreement with Rotten Tomatoes? I believe RT started blocking Justwatch when Justwatch was scraping the RT scores.
eyeinthepyramid··on An unwanted update to your Google Account
Didn't he want it to stay with Germany?
eyeinthepyramid··on Current RNA vaccines protect against worrying coronavirus variants
This article doesn't seem to address any of the strains originating in India, fwiw. My guess is that they haven't known of them long enough to understand their reaction in vaccinated people.
eyeinthepyramid··on Ask HN: Why is the Linux community struggling to implement hibernation?
you can set it up that way if you prefer, there is a resume= kernel param you can set to a separate file or device. I keep them combined tho because I hardly ever use much swap, and don't have a ton of disk, and if hibernation ever did fail, I can just close some tabs and be fine
eyeinthepyramid··on Yahoo Answers to shut down May 4, 2021
Isn't the better analogy that countries aren't people? Or are you really arguing that America is a person as opposed to a collection of people?
eyeinthepyramid··on Scots language Wikipedia is edited primarily by someone who doesn't know Scots
Part of the problem that Scots faces is that there are actually 3 Scottish languages: Scottish Gaelic, Scots, and Scottish English. Scottish Gaelic is similar to Irish, Scots is a descendant of Old English, and Scottish English is a dialect of standard British English. People often conflate Scots with Scottish English.
eyeinthepyramid··on Scots language Wikipedia is edited primarily by someone who doesn't know Scots
There is, of course, a difference between being a casual editor in Wikipedia, versus creating 1/3 of the entire encyclopedia while being illiterate.
eyeinthepyramid··on Why the US military usually punishes misconduct but police often close ranks
Hard to not mention violent crime though
eyeinthepyramid··on People think they're calling restaurants directly but Grubhub is getting a fee
From what I can tell, they connect the caller directly to the restaurant, but charge the restaurant a fee for their connection "service".
eyeinthepyramid··on Heineken WOBO: A Beer Bottle That Doubles as a Brick
Is there a source that's not literally the lobbying group for glass recyclers?
eyeinthepyramid··on Federal Reserve pledges asset purchases with no limit to support markets
The $1.5 trillion was a fund of one day fully collateralized loans, of which only ~$100 billion was actually used. There was no wealth transfer, just the fed following its mandate to keep interest rates on short-term loans within an acceptable band.

Here's the daily totals of repo loans:

eyeinthepyramid··on Why Don’t We Just Ban Targeted Advertising?
Perhaps to inform people about the goods and services that you offer that they might be interested in buying?
eyeinthepyramid··on Should Facebook, Google be liable for user posts? asks U.S. Attorney General
Are you suggesting that there should be a size requirement before a site has to pre-moderate their UGC? What metric would you use? Revenue? Taxable Income? Impressions? Volume of UGC? # of employees?

If there's a blanket repeal of liability protection for UGC, it's going to have a much larger impact on smaller forums.

eyeinthepyramid··on Should Facebook, Google be liable for user posts? asks U.S. Attorney General
If the survival of their company depended on it, they would absolutely figure out a way to pre-moderate content, and almost certainly that would include significantly more low-paid moderators.

They had something like $18 billion dollars in profit last year, you don't think they could afford to hire an army of moderators?

eyeinthepyramid··on Should Facebook, Google be liable for user posts? asks U.S. Attorney General
Will every post need to be pre-moderated to ensure that nothing objectionable is published? I wonder how this would affect sites like Hacker News and Reddit, or any forum sites really.
eyeinthepyramid··on Should Facebook, Google be liable for user posts? asks U.S. Attorney General
Won't they need to have even more low-paid workers to make sure they don't publish something that violates the law?
eyeinthepyramid··on CollegeHumor shuts down
The website is gone, it just redirects to a Youtube account. For all intents and purposes, it's shut down.
eyeinthepyramid··on BBC News launches 'dark web' Tor mirror
Dark web isn't inherently negative though, is it? It's not like they called it pedo-web.
eyeinthepyramid··on Rust 1.37.0
In case anyone else is curious, async/await isn't part of this release but should be in the next (1.38):

https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/62149

eyeinthepyramid··on Why the “Digital Ocean killed my company” incident scares the hell out of me
because that was the biggest issue in the original article, they didn't have backups of their data, so the company was dead. If they had had backups, they could have recreated the infrastructure.
eyeinthepyramid··on LeBron James school that was considered an experiment is showing promise
From the article:

"I Promise students were among those identified by the district as performing in the 10th to 25th percentile on their second-grade assessments. They were then admitted through a lottery."

eyeinthepyramid··on People who own businesses should not act like assholes
It's incredible the author was so proud of being an asshole that he wrote a blog post about it.
eyeinthepyramid··on Consumer Protection Bureau Aims to Roll Back Rules for Payday Lending
Do you think that $420/yr difference is really moving the needle on poverty?
eyeinthepyramid··on Write tests. Not too many. Mostly integration (2017)
I'm just reading the wiki, but it sounds like the equal time rule applies to any candidate who wants to buy air time, not just a major party one. Am I misreading it?

eyeinthepyramid··on Why Do Hospitals Hate Sleep So Much?
According to my doc cousin, it's to limit the number of patient handoffs between providers. Apparently error rates are around 5-10% per handoff, so the idea is that if the error rate from sleep deprivation is less than that, it's better to have sleep deprivation.
eyeinthepyramid··on Thieves boosting signal from key fobs inside homes to steal vehicles
For the 2nd factor, they should have some kind of non-electronic device which when inserted and turned, would allow the activation of the door and ignition of the car.
eyeinthepyramid··on Fed Says Millennials Are Just Like Their Parents, Only Poorer
Boomers were disdained as the "me generation" by their parents. Freaks, geeks, and long-haired hippies. It seems like the kids are always maligned by the olds, and vice versa.
