explorigin··on AI Infrastructure Landscape
And yet, technology still moveS forward. Bubbles are not all devoid of substance...just over-inflated for the substance within.
explorigin··on AI Infrastructure Landscape
It does have the same feel but there's a big difference. Back then we knew crypto was all fiat. Dollar value was based on perception that could and was(is still) manipulated by whales.

AI, OTOH, can provide meaningful value in most industries. Lump them together at your own peril.

explorigin··on Tell HN: Amazon claims "Zero tolerance for fake reviews"
Same. I recently added a similar review that never got published. When I try to make another review of it, I see:

"We apologize but Amazon is not accepting reviews on this product from this account. If you would like to contact us about this decision, please email community-help@amazon.com."

explorigin··on Mistral AI launches Mixtral-Next
Depends on what you want to use it for. I use deepseek-coder v1 (1.5 is too verbose). I use it like a customized web search to quickly build one-off scripts in python.

If you're wanting something to be your hands so you don't have to type, open-source LLMs and IDE integration is not reliably there yet. Follow the AIDER discord to stay up on the latest in this area.

explorigin··on Over the edge: The use of design tactics to undermine browser choice
Meanwhile Notepad++ has been free for 20 of those.
explorigin··on Over the edge: The use of design tactics to undermine browser choice
You're painting awfully broad strokes (Edge is the best for windows) for a very personal preference (vertical tabs).
explorigin··on Cops bogged down by flood of fake AI child sex images, report says
So many commenters didn't read the article.

> The troubling case seems to illustrate how AI-generated child sex images can be linked to real criminal activity while also showing how police investigations could be bogged down by attempts to distinguish photos of real victims from AI images that could depict real or fake children.

explorigin··on DeepSeek Coder: Let the Code Write Itself
> This code repository is licensed under the MIT License. The use of DeepSeek Coder models is subject to the Model License. DeepSeek Coder supports commercial use.

Says so on https://huggingface.co/deepseek-ai/deepseek-coder-6.7b-instr...

They have their own license to prevent things like propaganda or military use.

explorigin··on Antarctic fungi survive Martian conditions on the International Space Station
Astronomically low. (I'll see myself out.)
explorigin··on Ollama releases Python and JavaScript Libraries
I run ollama on my steamdeck. It's a bit slow but can run most 7b models.
explorigin··on Ask HN: What happened to normal-sized smartphones?
Sony makes awesome smallish phones...but they're expensive. [Marques Brownlee]https://www.youtube.com/@mkbhd) regularly talks about wanting smaller phones.
explorigin··on Show HN: Coffeehouse, one-on-one voicechat with random HN users
See whisper-speech posted yesterday.
explorigin··on A new approach to local multiplayer / splitscreen perspective with raytracing
Right, TTgames has been doing this for years with their Lego games.
explorigin··on NewPipe 0.26
Newpipe has a built-in "Play in Background" feature that would be awesome while driving. There are tons of podcast-like content videos on YT that would be fine for a commute.
explorigin··on Why Is the Press Attacking Home Schoolers?
This. Public school has to be catered to the bell curve. How much of that bell curve is covered depends on the budget of the school and how flat the bell curve is based on other factors. Because of this, much of school is repetitious, boring and unnecessary. Classroom management amounts to "babysitting" according to my teacher friend.

Homeschool kids can learn in 30/min per day what public school kids take all day to learn. Then they have more time to play or develop healthy interests.

Yes, the lack "kid-tracking" creates more room for abuse and brainwashing. That problem can be answered in ways that don't require kids to sit in a windowless room for 6 hours a day.

explorigin··on 'Biocomputer' combines lab-grown brain tissue with electronic hardware
BrainPal here we come!
explorigin··on DoorDash apparently using client side source of truth
Considering what we're talking about, a negative tip might have actually charged the driver. Hope you tipped in cash more than you negative tipped. :-P
explorigin··on Innovative wireless light switch could cut house wiring costs in half
I have a wireless battery-less doorbell. You push the button and the energy of your press is enough to make a short burst of RF enough for the receiver to "hear" it. Throw a few DIN switches on the back to customize the frequency and this simple system could work to trigger anything wirelessly.

Edit: They do exist: https://www.iebelong.com/u2-us-standard-kinetic-light-switch...

explorigin··on People with autism less likely to succumb to bystander effect, research finds
ASD is very dynamic. It is not linear spectrum, think of it more like a polar graph. I would think 67 may be enough people to get an idea for one "hallmark" but certainly not all of them as a comprehension.
explorigin··on Zimaboard: The closest thing to my dream home server setup
Nothing against Zimaboard but the best part of the article (for me) is his cable organization shown in his conclusion. So pretty.
explorigin··on Ads in the OS
Jetbrains justifies the cost for me. I can easily recoup the cost in productivity over VSCode.
explorigin··on Rare Otis Pop-Out Elevators (2016) [video]
I get anxiety just watching these elevators. I'll take the stairs thanks.
explorigin··on Coffee grounds make concrete 30% stronger
Direct UV light inhibits surface mould growth. This is why you don't see it (as much) outside.
explorigin··on Modernity has made us allergic
Clearly you have never seen proper immunotherapy (which has been in practice for decades). All patients are prescribed an epi-pen prior to starting treatment. It used to be that all doses were monitored for anaphylactic reactions but that is now clinic-dependent.
explorigin··on Modernity has made us allergic
Sublingual immunotherapy is a customized treatment administered by medical doctors. What do you mean by dangerous?

(I'm not affiliated with https://www.wyndly.com/, but that could be a good place to start for those unfamiliar.)

explorigin··on Bookwyrm – A federated social network for reading books
This is a good start but it's still plagued by the artificial scarcity of digital copies by limiting "checkouts".
explorigin··on Bluesky: Building a Social Internet
> What all these technologies had in common is they allowed people to freely interact and create content, without a single intermediary.

Anyone else see the irony here?

explorigin··on Amazon CEO Asks His Hollywood Studio to Explain Its Big Spending
Like flying a banner over Bezos house? Like The Expanse fans did.
explorigin··on Amazon CEO Asks His Hollywood Studio to Explain Its Big Spending
Amazon runs advertisements with its shows now...it just does so under the channel name "FreeVee".
explorigin··on Daniel Ellsberg has died
We can only speculate but Abraham is pleading with God more for his nephew necessarily than Sodom itself.
