Exactly, look at the "system" requirements for AOL Instant Messenger:

Windows 2000 or higher Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher 128MB RAM/512MB for enhanced multimedia features (TOTAL RAM in the system!!!!!) Macromedia Flash Microphone and speakers/headset for voice/audio chat

Think this is bad? Just wait until everyone adopts asm.js. So we can compile C++ code to "fast web apps" which will run in the asm virtual machine, in the javascript DOM sandbox, in the thin webbrowser client, and finally in the OS.

You can laugh, but that day is coming and I fear getting armies of college grad hipster-coders creating unreliable slow layered software until we have nothing but "Material" UI flat buttons and cursor lag when typing simple messages in a simple application. AHHHH

Ok, perhaps that was an over simplification - they are "complicated chat clients", but that still doesn't excuse the fact that massive industrial programs start instantly nowadays if they are native - think Unreal Engine, 3ds Studio Max, Blender, Sublime Text, the list goes on

It doesn't take that advanced of a programmer to know that a simple chat client like discord or slack should not take seconds (on the order of 5 to 6) to load! We are running super computers here!

Where was the Google CEO when all of this was being voted on? Where were the Google home-pages telling people to get active?
exitcode00··on Blockchain isn't about democracy and decentralisation – it's about greed
There are "fraudulent practices" in the real world exchanges - look at how LIBOR was/is rigged (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libor_scandal). And I certainly hope its "exchange value" isn't exactly the same as a government currency as that would defeat the purpose of having something different in the first place...
exitcode00··on Blockchain isn't about democracy and decentralisation – it's about greed
I suppose the stock market would be more like a "rigged casino" since the government's central banks can print money and confiscate funds (see Cyprus), but with pretty much all market leading crypto such things are impossible if you dont store you money on exchanges.
exitcode00··on Blockchain isn't about democracy and decentralisation – it's about greed
Exactly, you only need to look as far as Dash's effort in Venezuela to realize how crypto can benefit society, and if you trust governments not to turn the global stock markets into a glorified casino then look up the terms CDOs, HFT, "Dark pools", ZIRP, bail-ins, etc...

That was my revised comment - I have seen the light : )
exitcode00··on NPM and the future of JavaScript
I think its fairly well known that there are flaws in Javascript which was designed in a week and hows its used (DOM etc). The ease of its use probably lended to initial success, but the difficulty of making complex secure software has led people to reinvent the wheel it seems every 6 months.

I don't think having a polluted and bloated ecosystem like NPM is a mark of a success of quality. Just look at what happened when someone deleted their project from NPM - they broke the internet...

Javascript is a cancer. But I guess if you can't beat it, might as well learn to love the cancer?

Example?
exitcode00··on The Dark Arts of Advanced and Unsafe Rust Programming
I meant Rust is a copy of Ada in general - it does not deal with unsafe programming in the same way. Instead, you do things like instantiate generic packages/procedure like Ada.Unchecked_Deallocation and Ada.Unchecked_Conversion with the specific conversion or heap deallocation procedure you need. So you are forced to be explicit about every unsafe operation by including such procedures and calling such things - but you are not prone to accidents because you got in the habit of wrapping things in perverse "unsafe" blocks every time you meet a well-thought-out restriction of the language.
exitcode00··on The Dark Arts of Advanced and Unsafe Rust Programming
Ada does, and has better and more clear conventions for "unsafe" programming (pointer arithmetic, conversions, etc) but does it naturally without special keywords and esoteric conventions through its package system. Too bad no one will ever give it a chance due to is syntax :(

Rust is nothing but a slapdash C style copy of its semantics.

exitcode00··on Systems Languages: An Experience Report
No mention of Ada at all. Very sad and disappointing - Rust basically has a carbon copy of all of its features. It deserves a fair shake..
