The Ada standard library is massive and is included in the exception. There are "internal" "GNAT specific" packages which you can include in your project but there are not really any you need or would use in a general sense - there are even warnings you get at compile-time telling you that you are using something GNAT specific and are prefixed with GNAT.* instead of Ada.

No mention of Ada in 1996? How rude!
exitcode00··on Why has Plan 9 chosen statically linked binaries instead of dynamic ones? (2004)
Think of the time savings though of not having to apt-get/configure/make/google-search/repeat for 971 binaries! :P
exitcode00··on Why has Plan 9 chosen statically linked binaries instead of dynamic ones? (2004)
Doubt that, looking at my list of applications - I have 124. So, 100mb * 124 = 12.4 gb and I have half a terabyte of storage... Windows 10 requires 16 gb of storage. Heck most phones have 64 gb these days.

We need to stop living in the past - this very issue has probably contributed to the scourge of Electron crap being thrown at our faces since it doesn't suffer from dependency hell they just throw a bunch of javascript into an encapsulated instance of chrome and call it a day.

exitcode00··on Why has Plan 9 chosen statically linked binaries instead of dynamic ones? (2004)
Oh my, each app is going to be 20 mb bigger! This mattered 30 years ago, but now I would say we have a huge problem for end users with all of these "Package managers" and "dependency managers" getting tangled up because there are 5 versions of Perl needing 3 versions of Python and so on... I would be a much more happy Linux user if was able to drag and drop an exe. 100mb be damned
exitcode00··on You Can Now Run Windows 10 on the Raspberry Pi 3
Wow, I checked but apparently the Pi 3 DOES meet the Windows 10 system requirements just barely. I wonder how fast the UI and Cortana run...

exitcode00··on Free Messaging App for Slack, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram and More
No reason to get excited folks - its YAEC (yet another electron component).

Me: Wouldn't it be great if we had a light-weight native chat app that was compatible with all of the many slow-resource intensive chat programs i am chained to?

Everyone else: We have solved your problem by creating a new standard resource intensive chat program that solves none of your problems! Also it has cool animations!

exitcode00··on Scientists cut the tolerable intake of PFAs by 99.9%
Well, you'll end up with toxic drinking water with this attitude. I don't know what the right solution is, but saying you don't know enough at this point to throw out your teflon pans and avoid certain products and that you don't want to research things is lazy and ignorant.

Citizen's levying large class-actions suits and making documentaries like "The Devil We Know" are perhaps the best tools we have to stop fascist corruption.

exitcode00··on Scientists cut the tolerable intake of PFAs by 99.9%
Yes many of them are made with this junk, a lot of hygiene products have it too like "Oral-B" floss and even things like microwave popcorn bags...

The more people realize the FDA does not care about us and learn to take personal action the better.

exitcode00··on Scientists cut the tolerable intake of PFAs by 99.9%
Don't look now, but PFAs have been "replaced" with a chemical called "GenX." These companies will just shapeshift their toxic sludge every time a major suit is won. Sickening...

There are ways for us "end-users" to get a hold of LTSC. First download the demo from microsoft then go to ebay to buy a key from some shady guy for 14$. Seems to work for me :P

Very creative project! Did you experience any issues doing pseudo-low-level programming with Javascript's lack of typing system or definite integer/float data-types?
exitcode00··on Why I use old hardware
Guess what? Electron is everywhere and everything. Electron is taking over - its raining hamburgers.... RUN

Seriously though, I guarantee it would nuke old hardware into orbit. Its unfortunately not feasible IMHO due to modern software glut. More power to Drew, but many people are forced into using Skype, Slack, Discord :/

exitcode00··on Cleaning New York's harbor with one billion oysters
It's all semantics - I don't understand why people want to defend a multi-billion dollar corporation, but, lets say, that NYC didn't write off 5 billion to Amazon. Could the city have budgeted more for the failing subway and nasty harbor given that they received more in taxes? Maybe.. if they really cared for the city.

All these corporations do with their profits and tax-incentives is hoard them overseas and spend them on stock buy-backs.

exitcode00··on Cleaning New York's harbor with one billion oysters
Who cares where it comes from. Tax payers are out 5 billion does it matter how?
exitcode00··on Cleaning New York's harbor with one billion oysters
Imagine if the project was given the 5 billion tax dollars handed to Jeff Bezos instead of a measly 4.5 million... This is why the environments a disaster - not because you decide to buy an SUV

exitcode00··on Cdecl – Turns English phrases into C declarations
It is actually possible to define all of those things in a compiler standard and force them to do it certain ways or document possible "implementation permissions", but, again unicode identifiers are rare in practice because programming is designed for English speakers like it or not.

http://www.ada-auth.org/standards/2xaarm/html/AA-2-3.html

> And you still have to distinguish Color and Colour.

Still have to do that with case sensitive langs - whats the point here?

exitcode00··on Cdecl – Turns English phrases into C declarations
These are solved problems though and unicode identifiers are rare in practice...

See Normalization Form KC and Clause 21 of ISO/IEC 10646:2017.

"Normalization forms are the mechanisms allowing the selection of a unique coded representation among alternative; but equivalent coded text representations of the same text. Normalization forms for use with ISO/IEC 10646 are specified in the Unicode Standard UAX#15..." yada yada

exitcode00··on Cdecl – Turns English phrases into C declarations
Sure the current doctrine of programming says its good, but lets take a step back. First of all its counter intuitive to writing English and it damages readability so you may have naming conflicts without realizing it or the compiler being able to warn you.

Also, in addition to remembering what a function is called you have to also remember its casing which different libraries may want to be phrased differently (like C libraries versus C++ libraries).

Bypassing the very real issues it may cause in the design of your software it also may lead to silly library cruft (see Java's Color class) - how many ways can you spell blue?

https://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/api/java/awt/Color.htm...

exitcode00··on Cdecl – Turns English phrases into C declarations
Reading for both ends is maddening for seasoned devs, but in a general sense most languages are symbol salads these days for arbitrary, subjective reasons. The decisions made during the C development to squeeze the juice out of 60 character wide terminals haunt us to this day... like case sensitivity
exitcode00··on Cdecl – Turns English phrases into C declarations
> Separately, though, what do you mean by your "gimmick" comment?

Just meaning the website CDecl - its a neat tool to make C readable in English, but Ada is a real language used to make planes fly etc. Many people have contempt for it though which is why I made the joke xD

Interesting that you can note which type of memory an anonymous type comes from in Rust. I suppose its for optimization purposes? Doesn't seem that helpful from a pure typing perspective.

As an aside I doubt a layman would be able to understand that notation in Rust, whereas my girlfriend might be able to grasp or read Ada code or the output of CDecl.

exitcode00··on Cdecl – Turns English phrases into C declarations
How about just using Ada? It has the added bonus of not being a gimmick (depending on who you ask I suppose ; )

Ada: type Ret_Typ is array (1..3) of Integer; Foo : access function return not null access Ret_Typ := null;

C: int ((foo)(const void *))[3]

Cdecl: declare foo as pointer to function (pointer to const void) returning pointer to array 3 of int

ROFL, at some point there will be a javascript CPU (https://twitter.com/steipete/status/1047415826083729408) - and the entire OS will be asm.js. Then the cycle will begin anew with web browsers being built for the OS. God help us all D:
