Say hi? I don't bite :) but will very probably take a few billion years to get back to you: com.gmail@asmqb7

See https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=i336_ for old comments. Unsure if accidentally-locked accounts can be recovered; made new account regardless.

exikyut··on They make USB-C cables with displays now
You might be able to get partway there by setting up thunderbolt networking between two endpoints. The caveat is that USB 4.x is still new enough it may require a significant time sink to get working at ~40Gbps et al, so your testing wouldn't be able to scale that high. But you can go to 10Gbps without too much effort: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39003469

USB is quite the rabbithole, with a lot of functionality often hidden: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39470381 - my takeaway from this is that "the PHY in the controller is 99% of the SERDES you wish you had, you just have to figure out how to make it cooperate"

The chipsets found attached to ARM devices and SoCs etc may be easier to poke around at, but they are likely to either be expensive or just USB 3.0. :)

Then there are devices like the FNB58 and the Power-Z KM003C that interrogate the controller chip in the cable and tell what charging protocols the cable supports, and also measure practical charging voltage and current (and you can acid test chargers using USB charger dummy loads). These devices don't test the cable's speed though. (On that note, https://old.reddit.com/r/UsbCHardware/comments/1b5wgc6/how_t... - that subreddit may also be interesting)

Very very technically, if RDP is enabled and working, this could be fixed by rdesktop-ing to the machine from a Linux box and using xdotool to experiment with typing raw keyboard scancodes through the RDP session in the hope you figure out the encoding of the Copilot key.

exikyut··on Crash-only software: More than meets the eye (2006)
How does this work in terms of UI?

Obviously if there are windows on the screen that clearly doesn't make sense.

Does this just apply to applications that are technically running but don't have any windows open?

Kinda makes sense I guess.

Would be even cooler if the feature screenshotted minimized windows and also worked in that case, but noone's doing that already, so uptake would likely not be too high.

exikyut··on Ask HN: What is the most useless project you have worked on?
Browsers don't have a bookmark API that lets you rewrite the contents of bookmarklets et al.

How did it rewrite itself?

Also, are you referring to something like a Jupyter notebook?

exikyut··on Ask HN: What is the most useless project you have worked on?
I would second the recommendation to move off Heroku. They're essentially the smallest scale version of vendor lock-in out there nowadays, especially considering they're no longer free.

An open-sourced codedump will survive best if people (which effectively means "average technically-minded MTG player" in this case) can run it wherever they're most comfortable - which will almost certainly be something that smells like a VPS. Mayyybe a container.

I'm not in the US, so that sprawl sounds like my only option if I wanted to see what was available.

Where should I start looking? If there's enough high quality content, it might be worth it to download entire websites and index everything to classify and surface things.

As of right now Signal is back up for me!

Coming from Australia, HN is timing out, and Google is throwing QUIC_PROTOOCOL_ERRORs. And that's after rebooting my phone to kick the 4G connection as best as I can, so I think the problems aren't quite last-mile.

Given the other comment about AT&T and FB, something's happened in Nebraska (figuratively) per https://xkcd.com/2347/, or, idk...?

At least HN is loading consistently now.

exikyut··on Almost every infrastructure decision I endorse or regret
Because like every service-oriented offering, each platform differentiates as hard as it can to lock you in to their way of doing things.

Things largely look the same on the surface; this takes the most effect at the implementation-detail level, where adjusting and countercorrecting down the track is fiddly and uses an adrenally-draining level of attention span - right when you're at the point where you're scaling and you no longer have the time to deal with implementation detail level stuff.

You're on <platform> and you're doing things their way and pivoting the architecture will only be prioritised if the alternative would be bankruptcy.

You're probably already aware there are some hilarious drivers for I think VirtualBox that let ~Win3.1 achieve practically infinite VGA resolution.

And then you have your choice of networking via eg SLIP or (more sanely lol) a program that can mount VHDs offline.

Do you dual-boot Linux or Windows at all?

I'm guessing you put up with one of them (or something made by Apple) at work...?
