exidy··on Medium rolls out a payment model for writers based on engagement
Seems like a recipe for clapbait.
exidy··on Sweden drops Julian Assange rape investigation
Have you not heard of Kim Dotcom? He's battling extradition to the USA despite never having set foot in the country nor registered a business there.
exidy··on Flight QF72: What happens when automation leaves pilots powerless?
Every Airbus has this already: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_control_modes#Direct_la...
exidy··on Airbus A380 – $6.1B in additional costs due to project delays
We love to focus on the minutiae of technical specification. The reality is that both the 787 and the A380 are modern passenger planes with similar cabin environmental systems. How much you enjoy flying each type is probably going to depend more on incidental factors such as what seat you're in and who is next to you, and what IFE the airline chose to install (if any) when it comes to medium and long haul flying.

Personally I am not particularly tall or wide (174 cm) so I can make myself comfortable even in the cramped conditions of discount airlines. However if you're taller or wider, you're going to be checking seatguru for which airlines give you the most legroom. In general, the Airbus product for each segment (A320 vs 737, A330/A350 vs 787) is slightly wider than the Boeing product so if you're a big bloke it might be important to you.

For me, I've flown the 787 and the A380 but I actually like the old (Qantas) A330 best, for the simple reason that I like the window seat, and the less dense 2-4-2 configuration means I only have to climb over one person when I want to stretch my legs!

exidy··on Apple admits the Mac Pro was a mess
It's improved in that the causes of failure are now better understood. Getting it working means generating some UUIDs and things. e.g. https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/an-idiots-guide-to-imessa...
exidy··on Below Deck: Filipinos make up nearly a third of all cruise ship workers
And where did you learn to do financial planning? Were you perhaps raised in an environment where you could see loans, investments, assets, mortgages, credit and debit in action? Or perhaps you even had it as a formal subject in school?

Now imagine you were raised in a bamboo shack living hand-to-mouth in a cash economy.

exidy··on Ask HN: Swift or Objective-C for new iOS app in 2017?
Swift, unless: 1) You intend to keep this app maintained but can't afford to track future Swift languages changes, or 2) You want to optimise for binary size above all other considerations. (apps written in swift bundle the swift libraries)
exidy··on How I Work from Anywhere in the World
4-5 hours total, sure, but it's actually a 17-18 hour difference if you care about weekdays vs weekend!
exidy··on How a Boeing Sales Flop Became the World's Hottest Secondhand Jetliner
Short runways yes, but gravel kits were only offered on the 737-200 series with its low-bypass turbofans. The enlarged nacelles required to retrofit high-bypass turbofans to the already low 737 design ended that possibility.
exidy··on Ask HN: How to move beyond “freelancer”?
Booko lists 7 editions, latest one published October 2013: https://booko.info/works/65280 which is also the cheapest.
exidy··on Why Asus trackpad driver sets the CPU speed at maximum during scroll
Xcode.
exidy··on New EBS (AWS) volume type: General Purpose (SSD)
Thanks, but I'll contact AWS support through our account.
exidy··on New EBS (AWS) volume type: General Purpose (SSD)
Interesting. I can create a gp2 volume through the console, but not through CloudFormation.

UPDATE_FAILED - gp2 is invalid. Valid volume types are standard and io1.
exidy··on What (else) can men do? Grow the f*** up
"Boys who like computers are taught that we DESERVE sexual attention from women. We need to get over it." - what bizarro-world did this guy grow up in? Being unattractive to to members of the opposite sex is pretty much the sine qua non of the nerd stereotype.
