exhilaration··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
I think it depends on what countries the owners have connections to. Random ice cream shop I visited in Florida a few years back was staffed by young Turkish women, my wife asked they said there on J1's. Before that we were in the Florida Keys - the local mosque was full of young Uzbek men that worked in the hotels, all on J1s.
exhilaration··on In Vienna and Beijing, the first (thorium) nuclear clocks begin to tick
This is actually very rare for the New York Times - they're the only major publication that regularly links to the original sources.

exhilaration··on Gemini 3.8 text-to-speech
Browser extension? Try these: http://www.paper2audio.com/ https://freevoicereader.com/ https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/sza-text-to-speech/... https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/flow-tts/hknidankih...

I found all these on this subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TextToSpeech/

I've also see comments like "Microsoft Edge's read-aloud feature is amazing for TTS" but I haven't tried it myself.

Personally I use Kokoro with a python front-end on my Macbook, I linked to it in this comment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49818923 it outputs MP3, so I just copy those to my phone and listen as audiobooks.

exhilaration··on Gemini 3.8 text-to-speech
You might find this interesting, it seems to be exactly what you need to make an audio drama: https://github.com/Finrandojin/alexandria-audiobook

Also the Qwen3-TTS demo is cool, you can describe the voice you want: https://huggingface.co/spaces/Qwen/Qwen3-TTS

I came across both on this subreddit, it's very active: https://www.reddit.com/r/TextToSpeech/

I'm personally using this locally: https://github.com/mateogon/pdf-narrator (it's a Python frontend for Kokoro) on my M1 Macbook Air (from 2020, with 8GB RAM) and it's incredible. I make my own audiobooks now - for free!

My favorite voice is am_michael and here's a sample: https://voicerankings.com/voice/kokoro-82M/male/am_michael/s...

exhilaration··on WeatherNext 3
The Google daily and hourly forecasts aren't great, but the weather map forecast is excellent. Where does that come from? What's generating the predicted movement of the storm clouds?

exhilaration··on Icy Moons Are Ocean Worlds
Great read, other than Europa I wasn't aware of these other candidate ocean moons.
exhilaration··on Finder is so frustrating and has been since day one
How do I fix search on OSX? I can never find anything, even when I do the name contains search.
exhilaration··on Shutting down our public encrypted DNS
FYI I don't see YouTube ads on Android + Firefox mobile + uBlock Origin
exhilaration··on A Small Telescope That Surprised Me
So like others in this thread, I bought a used telescope, a 8" Dobsonian in my case, and it's absolutely massive, like 5 feet tall. Totally different than this SeeStar. And I don't see things like the photos in this article through my telescope. Those nebulas? No way.

So I have to ask - am I getting a more "genuine" viewing experiencing? Are stacking and perhaps AI enhancements reflecting the real night sky? Or is SeeStar/iPhone/Pixel output drifting more towards generative art?

exhilaration··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
Check this out: https://github.com/sammwyy/bleeding

BLEeding is a tool that allows you to jam Bluetooth (BR/EDR) and BLE devices. It can be used to spam DeAuth requests or L2CAP ping requests. It supports Linux, macOS, Windows and Raspberry PI.

exhilaration··on Risk of transmission of amyloid β pathology via transfused blood products
Agreed, this is just dumb and really really hard. Much easier to genetically modify animals like pigs or cows to make compatible blood.
exhilaration··on Pressed Penny Machine Map
No, a lot of the newer machines don't even ask you to put in a penny, they'll provide you one. I bet enough will be stockpiled to last indefinitely.
exhilaration··on Online clinics and influencers are promoting Cialis as a longevity drug
Very interesting. Since you've spent some time thinking about it, what's your hypothesis of the connection between high blood pressure and dementia? Any interesting links you could share?

Maybe high blood pressure causing more pressure in the blood vessels of the brain, leading to a lifetime or decades of cumulative damage?

exhilaration··on Semaglutide linked to lower predicted dementia risk
For a lot of people, the alternative to GLP-1's is dying of a heart attack in their 50s, or taking decades off their lives by developing type 2 diabetes, or any number of complications from weight-related diseases.
exhilaration··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
I'm confused, I work at a big giant Fortune 500, we all get GitHub Copilot subscriptionsn - we can switch between OpenAI and Anthropic models with just a click in Visual Studio. There's no stickiness at all. They just made us go through a training after the price hikes about how to choose between models for the best cost/benefit ratio.

exhilaration··on As downtown Seattle offices empty, city facing years of 'zombie' towers
There was a great episode of the Planet Money podcast a few weeks back that talked about boarding houses https://www.npr.org/2026/06/10/nx-s1-5851902/housing-afforda... they're apparently illegal in most places
exhilaration··on Immich 3.0
Oh wow, it recreates the Google Photos albums? That's the first time I've heard of a tool doing that. I've spent a ton of time organizing my Google Photos albums, that's a big reason I stay with it.
exhilaration··on GitHub Is Down
Our Big Giant Enterprise wants to move all our repos from ADO to GitHub for all the nifty AI features, but I'm told the frequent downtime is a major issue so we're slow-walking the migration.
exhilaration··on CT scans of BYD car parts
FYI my local library in suburban Pennsylvania has a 3D printer for public use. Check yours.
exhilaration··on A 10 year old Xeon is all you need
Prices from OpenAI and Anthropic have really jumped in the past month. I work for a big giant company and our Github co-pilot costs increased as of today, June 1st. Our internal estimates are that our bill will double or triple. How much are we willing to pay? I don't know, but nobody wants to be "left behind".

I think there's actually a big market opportunity here. Somebody, like Dell or HP, should start selling turnkey on-prem LLM servers.

exhilaration··on I turned a $80 RK3562 Android tablet into a Debian Linux workstation
I'm curious, how much to replace the battery? I bought my kid a used 2015 MacBook Air like 5 years ago and it needs a new battery, otherwise it's totally fine.
exhilaration··on Microsoft's "fix" for Windows 11
Funny you mention iOS - my MegaCorp-issued iPhone has Microsoft entune for device management and Active Directory membership, Microsoft Authenticator for single sign-on, and really high quality versions of Microsoft office apps - Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel. Microsoft is all-in when comes to iOS.

Over Peak I had to update a shared Excel file on SharePoint each night - because as we all know, Excel is the finest multi-user database in existence. I had no problems doing that from my iPhone.

exhilaration··on First in-utero stem cell therapy for fetal spina bifida repair is safe: study
Does that matter though? My impression is that most people don't see doctors anymore. Every urgent care visit I've had in the past few years has been with a physicians assistant or nurse. Same for our pediatrician, I can't remember the last time we saw her instead of one of the nurses.

I actually have a routine visit with a specialist at one of the top hospital systems in the country in 2 days, and I see in the portal I'm seeing a "CRNP, MSN", not a doctor.

They're behind, Toyota announced in 2017 that they would begin solid state battery production in 2022: https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1111717_2022-toyota-ele...

I would take solid state battery announcements with a large grain of salt.

exhilaration··on Modern cars are spying on you. Here's what you can do about it
Disabling the hardware can be really hard, my 2025 Toyota Sienna is always connected. You can't just pull a fuse or rip out an antenna, I have to take the entire dashboard apart to reach the Data Communication Module (DCM) module. If anyone's curious what that looks like, it's a little bit easier on the Toyota Tacoma, here are some pictures of the process: https://www.tacoma4g.com/forum/threads/disabling-dcm-telemat...

It's complex enough that I haven't done it yet in my Sienna, but I plan to!
