exhilaration··on Ford EV Customers to Gain Access to 12,000 Tesla Superchargers
Is there a guide you could point me to for identifying which of these 2016 Teslas have free supercharging?
exhilaration··on Fermented coffee’s fruity aromas [video]
Agreed! Personal suggestion: try a bag of the Allegro Sumatra Boru Batak, likely available at your local Whole Foods for not too much. It's very different from the South American and African beans most of us are used to.

exhilaration··on Fakespot Is Acquired by Mozilla
I imagine that Apple would have been bought by HP or IBM and you can guess how that would have turned out.
exhilaration··on Smuggling of silkworm eggs into the Byzantine Empire
I'm curious, is there a list somewhere of these world-changing industrial espionage incidents? Here's two more I remember off the top of my head. Not sure why the top results are the Smithsonian Magazine but here are some links:

Samuel Slater brings cotton mill technology to America in 1789: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/how-industrial-esp...

Robert Fortune learns Chinese tea production methods and brings them to British India in 1848: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/the-great-british-tea...

Someone (maybe you!) should write a book about this!

exhilaration··on SpaceX's First Starship Launch Tomorrow
You should read the previous thread https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35575298 lots of good stuff in there about visiting, especially this video https://youtu.be/aWvHrih-Juk
exhilaration··on GM plans to phase out Apple CarPlay in EVs, with Google's help
Good news for both of you: I rented a 2022 Corolla and it supported both CarPlay and Android Auto. Toyota gave in!
exhilaration··on FFmpeg 6.0
This mostly looks like they're adding support for new codecs, there's only 4 new options in there, which seems rather paltry for a dot zero version release. Should we consider ffmpeg feature complete?
exhilaration··on Shoichiro Toyoda, who turned Toyota into global automaker, has died
There was a bunch of reporting on this study like this: https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/features/phev-owners-not...

Here's the actual study (PDF): https://theicct.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/real-world-ph...

We may have talked about it on HN.

exhilaration··on Turkey’s earthquakes show the deadly extent of construction scams
I sent that to one of my Turkish friends and replied with this:

And the funny thing (not funny but ironic maybe) is it seems people didn't like that mayor and were irritated sometime because "he was always too much by the book." Now I'm sure the people of that town are grateful to have a mayor like that.

exhilaration··on “Open source” seeds loosen Big Ag’s grip on farmers
People underestimate how much agriculture is devoted solely to seed crops

Can you explain this further? I never thought about where seeds come from. Are there giant Bayer-owned fields devoted to growing seeds?

exhilaration··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
A good quarter of the country is medically barred from ever flying

Can you explain this further?

exhilaration··on Easter egg in flight path of last 747 delivery flight
Agreed, it's the best museum in the DC area.
exhilaration··on Show HN: KnifeGeek – Online Database of Pocket Knives
When I search for "Folding blade" and blade length "0-3 in", I only get 7 results from your site. A similar search on BladeHQ gets me 12,000+ results.

I think you have too few knives labeled as folding -- I don't see any Spydercos or Kershaws that come back with the folding checkbox, and only a few CRKTs. A quick fix might be to hide the folding checkbox.

exhilaration··on Netflix's New Chapter
HBO is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, likely one of their most valuable assets. I can't see them giving it up.
exhilaration··on NRC Certifies First U.S. Small Modular Reactor Design
I had to google PWR and it stands for pressurized water reactor https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pressurized_water_reactor

What are the alternatives?

exhilaration··on ‘Breakthrough’ obesity drugs that have stunned researchers
If anyone wants to try this, make sure you're NOT using what's usually passed off as cinnamon in America (Cassia), you want the real thing (Ceylon) -- and from a vendor you can trust. That amount of cassia cinnamon is likely to cause liver damage: https://www.consumerlab.com/answers/cinnamon-coumarin-liver-...
exhilaration··on Hotels turn to robots and room cleanings every 4 days to ease staffing shortages
While you are technically correct, NEARLY automatic weapons (binary triggers) are legal in most states, here's a random video for the curious: https://youtu.be/rOkAZkk__5g

And fully automatic (but illegal) weapons are easily available in the form of Glock auto sears https://www.vice.com/en/article/pkp8p8/glock-switches-auto-s... my buddy in Baltimore heard on of these being shot in his Baltimore neighborhood a few weeks back.

exhilaration··on Hetzner continues its growth in the US with a new location
Not a customer of either but it's very interesting what you're saying in the context of all comments here complaining about not being allowed to open accounts on Hetzner. Maybe their extreme vetting requirements are actually paying off.
exhilaration··on The Wyoming corner crossing case
Previously discussed (last week): https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33753467
exhilaration··on Remotely unlock/start/locate any remotely connected Honda/Nissan [resolved]
My garage is right below my kids' room so leaving the car on would definitely be dangerous. Most remote starters automatically turn after 10 minutes so I'd like to think that mitigates that particular threat. Also we have carbon monoxide detectors in every room (after one of my neighbors' HVAC exhaust got blocked by snow after a particularly bad storm).
exhilaration··on Sperm counts worldwide are plummeting faster than we thought
I've switched everything to that brand -- could you share that brand? It would save us a lot of research.
exhilaration··on Biotech firm uses tiny worms in test for pancreatic cancer
Testing experts can work on tests while treatment experts work on treatment. I would imagine that the two specialties are significantly different.
exhilaration··on Map of the Universe (Johns Hopkins University)
This is fantastic, it's much more comprehensible than the Hopkins map.
exhilaration··on A navigation app that illuminates public land within privately held property
The best part is that he couldn't even convince a local jury!
exhilaration··on EVs are the least reliable vehicle type: Consumer Reports
My 2016 Toyota Sienna came with run flat tires. No spare, no can of sealant.
exhilaration··on What Riding in a Self-Driving Tesla Tells Us About the Future of Autonomy
For those hitting the paywall: https://nyti.ms/3AiWsB7
exhilaration··on Rimac Nevera Hits 412kph to Become World’s Fastest Production Electric Car
Thank you for the explanation, my mind initially went to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Internet,_nobody_knows_...
exhilaration··on Mass of transactions leaving crypto.com wallets
My point tho is that people have a lot money laying around.

They don't. The taxi drivers, hairdressers, and hotel doormen that got caught up in crypto are going to lose a significant chunk of their life savings if these exchanges blow up. There's 2-3 trillion dollars in crypto at this point, how much of that is from unsophisticated retail investors? A quarter? Half? Nobody knows.

exhilaration··on Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes is denied a bid for new trial
prison for the rest of her life

LOL, she's looking at what, an 18 month sentence? Of which she'll serve maybe half?

exhilaration··on A Sun-like star orbiting a black hole
Brightness seems to be measured as apparent magnitude but that's denoted by m https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apparent_magnitude

I think G is Stellar Classification https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stellar_classification#Class_G which would mean this new star is the same class as our Sun.
