ewar-woowar··on Stack Overflow Isn’t Very Welcoming – It’s Time for That to Change
First time I asked question on SO I got a very curt response "this isn't a code writing service" and pretty much told to gtfo, but my question was very much asking for advice about _how to proceed as a beginner_ and I was clear about that. I was explicit in framing a coding a problem and asking for direction, not a solution to my homework.

Maybe it was the wrong site for that, but the elitist response, I think the question even got deleted by a mod along with the scathing comment, made me leave and only use SO as a reading resource. Never contributed and probably never will even though 8ish years later I have learned enough to be able to contribute.

ewar-woowar··on Proposed NYC legislation would give employees right to ignore after-work email
It's hard to ignore when it also goes to your phone. Also when the company _expect_ a reply.

I have had HR routinely email me between 9 and 11 pm on Sunday nights as a deliberate strategy to make me stressed/uncomfortable with the workplace. Some people are trash and use technology as a weapon.

ewar-woowar··on Hotel CEO celebrates higher prices in NYC after anti-Airbnb law passes
I think your missing the subtleties of British English, "can't really blame them" means that you hold them responsible but that you also see their side of things.

eBay can't check the source of a 2nd hand item to discern if it is stolen.

Surely if there were landlords renting out entire apartment buildings then the sequential addresses would show up in AirBnB's data as mystreet 1a, mystreet 1b, mystreet 1c and so on? It must have been pretty obvious to the point that a routine check against illegal activity should have carried out.

Shipping and not being able to preview any of the series makes buying everything a very expensive lottery. Who buys random series of TV shows they have never seen even a single episode of?
ewar-woowar··on Hire characters, not skill sets. My most important questions in interviews
Or "plays golf/football, comes from a similar background to us", where gender doesn't play a role, not even in the much-reported IT industry where there is a paucity of women .

As a Brit in central Europe I have come up against this, not to the same extent as someone who isn't white, or comes from a markedly different culture, but the differences in culture even between some European nations can be enough that employers do not perceive me as "one of them".

What happened to hiring people who are not like us, because that's where the challenge lies and life is better when we are forced to evaluate our own misgivings?

A lot of IT people are so similar in personality, skills, hobbies etc that they all fail in the same areas, not just succeed in those areas. My own work place could be better, and produce a better product, if everyone wasn't so like-minded, imo.

One of my favourite Twitter people to follow is Remy Sharp, he tweets all the dumb stuff he does (he's a developer btw). All the mistakes he makes are there alongside the great things he achieves from day-to-day. It's inspiring to see someone much better at development than I am using twitter to learn, err, clarify and sort.

The main difference being hat before social media you probably had direct contact with those people on your friends list, because you either worked with them or hung out with them. That direct contact allows people to filter the bragging from the reality much more easily.
