I agree with you on most points. But what to do about it? It seems that better parenting would be the place to start. Instead of sending kids to college/university when they turn 18, have them: travel, come to work with parents/friends/family, dine on the Khan Academy, start a business, get a job, have kids, volunteer, watch TV, do nothing.
This sounds vaguely familiar with what you do after college and could be better for you. In my current position there are two gents that do the same thing as me, have more experience, and get paid about 30K more, and are 15 years older than me. They never received a BS or similar level education. While I went to school for 4.5 years and spent 120K in the process. Though I feel my education from RIT was well worth it and regret none of it. It is all about how you do with what you have.
Step 2: Tell your friends and family to write their representatives.
Step 3: Search for your representative's contact information and call their office. Send them a fax. Go in personally.
Step 4: Pray.
Step 5: (If required). Join the legal movement that we will create. Follow on http://www.eff.org
Step 6: (If required). A technological solution can and will be created.
Some simple steps can be taken to protect data integrity and security:
-Don't leave the data connected to the Internet 24/7.
-Power off the storage medium when you are done with it.
-Keep it in a physically safe location when not in use.
-Encrypt the data or the volume.
-Have a backup of your backup on a different medium and if possible different location.
-Don't advertise the data.
These are activities which are easy to set up and can help insure a more pleasant digital lifestyle. You could go to more extremes but then it becomes invasive. Not worrying about it much because you find it unlikely or just don't care is bad. Not worrying about it much is what you want to do because you have taken the important but easy steps to keep yourself safe.
Though, using someone else's salary point as a reason for your salary is not really a smooth move. No two people are the same, and just because you make more or your friend makes more, doesn't mean one is better than the other.
People need to realize that there is no need for 175k history major graduates each year and that they will probably never use their degree. The same goes for many other majors, but you know what, if you love it, pursue it, right? Isn't that what entrepreneurship is all about? Just be realistic about your path.
If the cost of schooling is getting out of hand then the people paying for it should do something about it, as some already are. See University of Puerto Rico: http://www.workers.org/2010/world/upr_0520/
