ewams··on US telcos appear to be selling non-anonymized access to consumer telephone data
On their website it shows that fiserv is a customer of theirs. Fiserv provides core banking services for almost every major bank in the US which means they know your money situation and your browser habits. Pair the two together and they basically know everything about you, lets see if they sell it to advertisers too? Or have been hacked? Or rouge sys admins? Or ...
ewams··on Someone Created a Tor Hidden Service to Phish My Tor Hidden Service
We are moving towards a more centralized web, not decentralized. The technology industry, and the Internet, is consolidating. Look at the news for all the companies being purchased by facebook, google, microsoft, amazon, apple, hpe and cisco. Also look at ISPs, Timewarner and spectrum, verizon, att, etc all are consolidating. It will continue to become harder to hide, or be anonymous, as we make this path because not only will data be held by just a few players, but so will the transmission lines only be held by a few.

Quad socket 24 core would fit. Skylake has up to 28cores and 8 socket support.
ewams··on White House Looks at Replacing Social Security Numbers
Look at their first quote, the reason for all this is “What is a better way to identify consumers in our country in a very secure way?" We are labeled as consumers, not citizens. Culture issue and perception issue everywhere.
ewams··on On Disk IO, Part 3: LSM Trees
My understanding is nvme drives are SSD drives, it's just a different interface. It goes over the pcie bus instead of thru sata / sas which have to go thru another processor that introduces overhead. So they are just faster SSD drives because the connection method and communication format is different.

ewams··on Explain like I’m 5: Kerberos (2013)
My favorite when talking Kerberos back in school days - the "Ticket Granting Ticket". Which the author goes over. Love me some ticket granting tickets!

ewams··on How Bank of America Gave Away My Money
You are correct, thank you I read the last update wrong. I personally still attempt to not do business with these organizations for multiple reasons.
ewams··on How Bank of America Gave Away My Money
They have failed to pay back billions, much less $3k. Do not do business with any organization on this list: https://projects.propublica.org/bailout/list

I say both. You coming over on July 4th for our big Forth of July Celebration?

And year/month/day/hour/minute/second is best as its largest to smallest and if you name your documents / fields in this format it sorts better.

ewams··on Hackers Have Stolen Millions of Dollars in Bitcoin Using Only Phone Numbers
Don't forget number porting is recently new. The FCC started requiring carriers do it in 2003. Since the telco's were forced to do it, you think they are going to put any effort into it unless legally required to do so? They don't care.
ewams··on The first web site
Maybe I am missing something, but how is this the first web site when it has css and javascript, which were brought about in 94-95, when the page claims it was published in 1992.

In clicking around, most of the page is the "original" but not sure about the line mode part. Thoughts?

ewams··on What Could Have Entered the Public Domain on January 1, 2017
Devil's advocate: think about star wars. Did it make more in the first few years, or these past few years? How do we handle that? If anyone could produce a star wars item, think about all the artists, engineers, lawyers, authors, that currently support that industry and would then be threatened. (ie, books, movies, TV, music, video games, cards, boardgames, comics, websites, shorts, etc etc).
ewams··on Why I only work remotely
An article with sources!!! Love it.

I have been remote for about 7 years now. Was in the office for 2 weeks when I moved for new hire training, that is it. Entertained a few positions at other companies that paid about the same but wanted me to drive 10-15 miles one way (about 30-45 minutes due to rush hour). No thanks! Surprised author did not say anything about that lost productivity, not to mention I have always viewed driving to/from work as a business expense yet Big Corp doesn't agree.

Glad author talked about how some people like the office, some people are good at it, while others are best at home. Just like everything else, everyone is different.

I will view the rest of my career as successful if:

1) I don't have to go to an office everyday

2) I never have to be on-call

ewams··on Infrastructure Software is Dead
Talking technology, VMware NSX is the best SDN out there. You can do all the things the competition does but with zero programing.
ewams··on Infrastructure Software is Dead
It is really funny, I agree with this 100% but also think because of the new norm of instant gratification this person is totally wrong. I have customers that all the time state they want to move to an openstack platform but have no programmers or unwilling to hire programmers. So of course we go down that path, look at the capex and opex and their brains explode. Then we look at aws/azure/vCloud and regular internal cloud with its associated costs and they come back from their heart attacks.

If you are a services company, he is right, you should be focusing on outcomes. But, if you can't tell me in 2-3 sentences what problem you are solving and how it benefits the customer you are doing it wrong.

This is a world of businesses and businesses need to make money, usually. Everyone gets so caught up on the new hot thing or the new "revolution" or what the competition is doing without thinking of what problem they are trying to solve or what actual value they are providing. This article says they provide outcomes, sure I can provide outcomes by moving you to SAP, or VDI, or hyperconverged, but what problem is this solving?

Don't tell me it "cut costs", it rarely does and lots of people smarter than me have shown that cutting costs are not the top priority of most leadership.

Back to the point of the article. I have made a lot of money in consulting. I now sell consulting services. You know how I do it? "Yes Mr customer how are you? Cool great, I am fine thanks. So what problems does your organization have, what are your goals, and how can I help you?"

Boom. You are all welcome.

Don't talk about product or you will lose to me or someone better. Don't talk money or you lose. Don't talk fads or you lose. Talk about the business and how you will help it reach its goals, overcomes it's problems, and grow!

ewams··on Critical Update on DAO Vulnerability
The developers appear to be treating this as a dev environment - "We were starting a new team (welcome @hiddentao, @evertonfraga and @luclu) and I was pushing for weekly releases, without proper testing. Meanwhile the DAO happened, and we wanted to make a release that had support for events subscription without realizing the performance impact it would have..."

I realize this is the wallet development but they are absolutely related and shows the culture of this software is not as professional or thought out as it should be.

ewams··on University pays $20,000 to ransomware hackers
RSA has some tools to assist with decryption from a few ransomware flavors. I would assume a few of the other big security firms do as well. We did this for a hospital that got hacked. It is not 100% successful and depends on the variant but is possible.
ewams··on Dalai Lama says there are 'too many refugees in Europe'
Absolutely. https://heartiste.wordpress.com/2016/05/31/civilizational-de...
