Teenage Engineerings OP-1 is a newish small form synth, expensive but regularly seems to appear on Craigslist at a reasonable price.
evo_9··on Attention is all you have
As logic stands, you couldn't meet a man who's from the future But logic broke; as he appeared, he spoke about the future

[Pre-Chorus] "We're not going to make it," he explained how the end will come "You and me were never meant to be part of the future"

[Chorus] All we have is now All we've ever had is now All we have is now All we'll ever have is now

[Verse 2] I noticed that he had a watch and hat that looked familiar He was me, from a dimension torn free of the future

[Pre-Chorus] "We're not going to make it," he explained how the end will come "You and me were never meant to be part of the future"

[Chorus] All we have is now All we've ever had is now All we have is now All we'll ever have is now

Flaming Lips - All We Have Is Now

Interesting, a lot of cool mods including Mass Effect Trilogy. Thx for sharing this.
evo_9··on Nebula Sans
For the past day or so I’ve been baffled why this font has lingered on HN’s front page. And I read this comment several times and I kept wondering what is he talking about, it’s just a font. A very good font that I actually think is nice and my friend who is a designer is quite taken by, but still it’s a font.

Today, I finally search for nebula streaming and found the actual site his comment is referring to so here it is: https://nebula.tv/

Side note: it’s a minor nit that HN seems to have a very frequent problem with threads getting hijacked with unrelated comment threads, often the top comment(s). I wish there was a way to split the comments off with a new title that clearly explained that this is not related to the original post.

evo_9··on How to Exist
2 seconds inhale, 2 seconds hold, 6 seconds exhale for 5 minutes. I use iBreath on iOS.
evo_9··on How to Exist
Similar experience for me as well.

I switched to a five minute breathing exercise to encourage deep sleep, and that actually has been profound.

Getting 7 to 8 hours of good / deep sleep every night is quite literally one of the best things you can do for yourself.

Maybe give it go.

evo_9··on AI subscriptions are a ticking time bomb for enterprise
Every AI subscription is a ticking time bomb for the frontier provider; within a few years we will be running local models as good as today’s frontier models with almost no cost burden. The floor will fall out of the enterprise market for all the frontier companies.
evo_9··on HERMES.md in commit messages causes requests to route to extra usage billing
Nothing so far, but I'm keeping an eye on it and debating just canceling entirely.
evo_9··on HERMES.md in commit messages causes requests to route to extra usage billing
I recently had my automatic reload double charge me $100. I tried reaching out to Anthropic, but my only option (of course) was a chat agent. After going through a conversation with it, I was told someone would reach out to help with the matter. Never happened. I eventually reached out to my credit-card company and did a dispute, which they just ruled in my favor.
evo_9··on Archive of Byte magazine, starting with issue #1 in 1975
2600 magazine was another fun one to dig through:

evo_9··on How I use Obsidian (2023)
I've been using Cursor / Claude Code to open my Vault folder, or a sub-folder in the vault; since Obsidian is stored in .MD files you can chat with your LLM about whatever info is in there. I used this to review and prepare for interviews, and it was extremely effective in helping me land my new job.
evo_9··on Claude Code is being dumbed down?
Serous question - why do people stick with Clause Code over Cursor? With Cursors base subscription I have access to pretty much all the Frontier models and can pick and choose. Anthropic models haven’t been my go-to in months, Gemini and Codex produce much better results for me.
evo_9··on Thatcher Effect – Optical Illusion and Explanation
This counting bicycles illusion is also really crazy: https://optical.toys/disappearing-bicyclist/
evo_9··on STFU
My 3 and 5 year old love this, very entertaining for small children.

And I’ll most definitely use this for its intended use, great way to solve that problem. Nice job

evo_9··on Firefox will have an option to disable all AI features
I hope Zen disables this by default, or completely removes it if that’s an option.
evo_9··on The Tesla Model Y Just Scored the Worst Reliability Rating in a Decade
I’ve owned two model Ys over the past 5 years or so. Zero maintenance issues. I also had a 2020 Model 3 that I recently sold and it had 1 issue with the small secondary battery after 5 years. Tesla charged me ~$140 to come to my house and replace it.
evo_9··on Space Truckin' – The Nostromo (2012)
I always loved Alien and Blade Runner because of this shared aesthetic. It gave the sense that the doomed ship Nostromo departed Blade Runner earth.
evo_9··on Valve is about to win the console generation
One other semi-unrecognized advantage Valve has over consoles is their generous return policy. I’ve bought many games on a whim knowing if I don’t jive with it I can safely get a full refund. Contrast that with my Ps5 where my 2 year old managed to smash buttons while I was tied up on a work call and bought COD for $69 bucks… no way to refund it and I’m not a fan of shooters. Basically Fd on that one.
evo_9··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
How can I prevent Windows 10 from upgrading to 11? I have a gaming pc that's basically just for VR, and is ~5 years old. I play non-VR on my SteamDeck, so really I just want to keep my old pc gaming box running on 10 for (occasional) VR gaming at this point... also, pretty heavily invested in Steam (VR and non-VR) so I really prefer not to switch to something like Meta Quest, etc.
evo_9··on Ask HN: What Arc/Dia features should we prioritize?
Agree - plus it’s a FF fork so it allows UBlock.
evo_9··on Court records reveal Sig Sauer knew of pistol risks for years
As a Sig 320 owner, and someone that knows at least 3 other sig 320 owners, I disagree. None of us ever carry our weapon chambered. I probably know 10+ guys that own guns, including a few police officers, and I'm going to ask the officers about this because honestly, I would be surprised if they even carried their weapons chambered.
evo_9··on Court records reveal Sig Sauer knew of pistol risks for years
You forgot to mention that the gun also needs to have a bullet chambered. Not exactly how I would carry a holstered weapon, but hey, I’m 100% certain people do exactly that. Especially in a military situation so I’m not judging.
evo_9··on “No tax on tips” is an industry plant
Sure, my experience isn’t with sharing, basically. Nice.
evo_9··on “No tax on tips” is an industry plant
According to my accountant for my wife’s small business (nail and wax salon) this tax law change will have a significant positive impact on her staff. Not sure what to make of this article, it seems pretty disingenuous.
evo_9··on Ageing accelerates around age 50 ― some organs faster than others
Agree - I’m 58 and still do the same workout I did in my 30s and 40s including 3 sets of 15 to 20 pull-ups depending on the day. I also still skate (hockey) 2 -3 times a week with a bunch of retired pros (echl, nhl, etc) and typically put up a bunch of points every skate (possibly slightly more assists now but I attribute that more toward enjoying that more these days and not needing to be so flashy)
evo_9··on Bypassing Google's big anti-adblock update
Ditto - I’m on Zen browser a FF fork, it’s a clone of Arc and quite love it. No way I’m going back to chrome or any chromium browsers.
evo_9··on Perplexity launches Comet, an AI-powered web browser
You’re probably thinking of The Browser Companies Dia Browser (replaced Arc). Came out last month, same AI focus.
evo_9··on Ask HN: What are some cool or underrated tech companies based in Canada?
Sparx - they make a great high tech home skate sharpener. Me and just about every serious player I know own one:

evo_9··on LM Studio is now an MCP Host
I was using Claude 3.7 exclusively for coding, but it sure seems like it got worse suddenly about 2–3 weeks back. It went from writing pretty solid code I had to make only minor changes to, to being completely off its rails, altering files unrelated to my prompt, undoing fixes from the same conversation, reinventing db access and ignoring existing coding 'standards' established in the existing codebase. Became so untrustworthy I finally gave OpenAi O3 a try and honestly, I was pretty surprised how solid it has been. I've been using o3 since, and I find it generally does exactly what I ask, esp if you have a well established project with plenty of code for it to reference.

Just wondering if Claude 3.7 has seemed differently lately for anyone else? Was my go to for several months, and I'm no fan of OpenAI, but o3 has been rock solid.

evo_9··on Cursor 1.0
This is why I’m using Zed now, and Claude Code. I like to keep Zed pretty minimal and I’m slowly weening off of Cursor in favor of Claude Code when I need it
