evervevdww221··on "Google Stadia is not a product that exists because people want it"
one more detail regarding cloud utilization. It might not be what you think it is.

Game playing activity peaks roughly at the same time during a day, mainly in the evening. Basically you need to launch one vm per user during that time. And those vms will be idle during the day time. Sure, due to time differences, those vms can be used by other people from a different time zone. But the further the data center is, the poorer the experience will be.

$2 per hour per machine is not a made-up number, just check how much Amazon charges for a GPU vm.

Again, we were a small company, we had to use other cloud providers. I don't know why amazon or alike are so expensive. We tried colocation too, not any cheaper to be honest.

Also, when buying a computer or a console, you don't pay by usage. you pay one time to own the hardware and the remaining 5 year usage is free, plus power bills no one really cares. 5% utilization times 5 year is still some decent hours, the cost is not necessarily more than a cloud vm.

For a cloud vm, you pay by usage. The more you use, the more you pay, the overall payment is not capped. Eventually the cost will surplus that of the hardware. And I'm saying "Eventually" is actually a month.

I used to work on (the second generation) cloud gaming. It's very difficult to be profitable. Most people would think that the challenge is latency, streaming quality. But the real challenge is cost management. The cost can be easily as high as $2 per hour. At this rate, the monthly cost will buy you a decent computer or a console. It doesn't make sense.

Plus, to make cloud gaming work, you have to own everything. From the video encoding hardware, operating system, virtualization, game content, distribution channel, cloud ...

For example, we tried to hack windows to support existing windows games. It was very difficult. Windows isn't a multi-user system. There is no proper user isolation. We have to monitor the hard drive to see what files are touched by games, and try to resolve conflicts caused by different users using the same machine. It's very hacky. An easier way is just discarding the VM and refreshing the hard drive, but it will result in long loading time of several minutes, very high cost and poor experience.

And then there is the game store problem. Game publishers won't share revenue. You basically sell the games at the same price and also charge users for the cloud gaming platform for a compromised experience. doesn't make sense.

There is only one company that owns the whole stack, Microsoft. They own the OS and APIs (so that includes all the drivers), virtualization, games (XBox store), data centers (Azure).

A few years ago, YC invested in a cloud app streaming company (they kinda used the same technology we used.). I was surprised. After working on it for a few years, I would not invest if I were an investor.

Google's stadia seems to be smarter. As it tries to avoid some of the dead-ends we went to, especially trying to hack windows to make it cloud gaming friendly. Google chose to use Linux and develop games tailored for cloud gaming. I think that's a better choice, but will face content issues.

evervevdww221··on When Do We Have Empathy for the Mentally Ill?
At least in my girlfriend's case, she seemed to feel regret after the maniac episode is over.
evervevdww221··on When Do We Have Empathy for the Mentally Ill?
I had been helping my bipolar ex-girlfriend all the time, and yet she did things to hurt me and push me away.

I share the same feeling with you, although I'm still struggling if I should help her.

evervevdww221··on When Do We Have Empathy for the Mentally Ill?
My ex-grilfriend married herself in one day, after I accompanied her to a hospital for her "severe insomnia" problem, without even telling me.

Out of sadness and anger, I cut off all of our contacts. A month later, she emailed me saying her psychiatrist said she had suicidal thoughts, and she wanted to see me. I went to see her immediately out of worries. That's the first time for the past 3 years I felt that she was not normal. For example, she was extremely talkative and she jumped between different topics that don't even have any connections. I knew that she had a history of depression for 10 years. But I don't know if it was a mis-diagnosis or her depression had developed into bipolar. She said her marriage decision was made during her maniac episode. She only loved me. But she decided to stay in the wrong marriage, because she couldn't punish her husband for her wrong decision. After making sure she didn't have the suicidal thoughts, I left.

I started to read about bipolar and learnt that during its maniac episode, a patient trends to make high risky decisions that he/she would regret afterwards, including spending lots of money, and having affairs.

And then after a month, she wanted to see me again, for a farewell, because she had to leave the country. She told me she had an affair with another guy and got pregnant. Again, she said she only had loved me, but she made wrong decisions during her maniac episodes. She said I could forget about her because she had turned into a different person, not the same girlfriend I ever had. Even I had read wikipedia and even a website about bipolar infidelity, it was really hard for me to accept everything. Again, out of anger, I told her I despised her and would never trust her. This time she blocked my contacts.

I don't know how I should accept and understand her, forgive her and help her. She mentioned that she wanted to leave me, because she knew I loved her, so she can't become my burden. That deeply saddened me.

For the past a few months, I have trapped myself in a loop of thinking about everything happened and feeling being used and then all the nice time we had together. I struggled a lot, not knowing if I should pick up the phone.

evervevdww221··on Ask HN: Which types of tech jobs are best for people that can't handle stress?
quality assurance positions
evervevdww221··on Ask HN: How did you come to grips with your own mediocrity?
I cut off my social networks (Facebook ...) because of this. Am I a coward? I'm still trying to improve my situation, but I too have insomnia because of stress and anxiety, I can't focus because of them.
evervevdww221··on Ask HN: How do you solve internal software documentation at your company?

evervevdww221··on Ask HN: Why are law documents (GDPR) so difficult to understand?
Also, is hackernews complied to GDPR? I didn't seem to see a "delete account" button? As I know GDPR asks that users' data can be deleted at anytime?
evervevdww221··on Ask HN: Why are law documents (GDPR) so difficult to understand?
Can I trust those "summaries" (open interpretations)? What if I got fined by trusting them? Who to blame?
evervevdww221··on Ask HN: Why are law documents (GDPR) so difficult to understand?
What if this law will be abused as a tactic to attack business competitions? Why would that happen?

> For example, Business A has a competitor startup B who has less resources to hire security consultant. Business A hence hired person C to register the service provided by B with a weak password and hire D to breach C's account. C claims that he has been hacked, so he brings startup B to court. B goes bankrupt because it runs out of money to hire lawyers.

You use your knowledge or regulation to read and make decisions. If you don't have the required experience,

> How do I know I have required experience (what experience is required is not said in the regulation text)? I know md5 is insecure and you need salting on password. I'm self learned, garage based entrepreneur with $1000 in my bank to either buy food or hire a consultant, is that required experience?

evervevdww221··on Why Snapchat Spectacles failed
I thought it faced a certain and quick death when it was launched.

The thing is expensively useless. And the design is very cheesy.

Surprisingly, at the time, I saw many articles praising it as "the most brilliant idea", feeling like total flattery. I suspect those were from their marketing team. Guess the market isn't so easy to fool.

evervevdww221··on The Four Worst Programming Languages Today
I'm a long time c++ programmer. I can't understand why people thinks c is better than c++.

At work I deal with a large project of mixed c and c++ (few million lines of code), with legacy code written in c and newer code in c++.

My experience of dealing with those c code is very painful. 2 concrete examples:

1. people say they hate c++ but like c. but they still embrace the concept of OOP in the c code. they use c struct to fake what c++ class does (and make every member variable a public one). in C++ when you set and get a member variable, you often use a getter and a setter. this makes it easy to find out where a variable has been accessed and changed (set a break point in the setter or getter). but in c code, since all members of a struct are referenced via pointers, it's very painful to debug when and where a member is changed. I have to use memory break point. Even setting memory break point in c++ is easier, as I have the constructor function to break into, to find out where an object is allocated, but in c code, it could be everywhere, my only hope is using the grep tool.

And I'm talking about debugging and maintaining undocumented large code base written in c by other people.

2. C++ class encourages programmers to partition and organize their code more reasonably. usually a class represents a single module of functionality. and usually a class is written in a header and a cpp file. You know you should look at the header for its interface, and you know to find its cpp for implementation.

but in the c code I'm dealing with, there is no such partition. several interfaces could be groups into a single header, and the implementation of those interfaces could be scattered across several c files or mixed into a single c file. This is just painful to look at.

evervevdww221··on Volkswagen's New Camper Has a Loft Where You Can Stargaze
This is disappointing. If this RV can relieve the need for house purchasing in Bay Area, 100k price tag doesn't seem to be a problem.

It's a shame that this vehicle is named California and we can't buy it in California. America is such a great place for RV camping (vast area, low population density, plenty parking spaces and so many beautiful places to go), and VW somehow decided not to sell any of these for 14 years!

I mean, just checking the craigslist prices for those second hand vw campers from the 60s, their marketing people should be able to tell there is a strong demand for this in the US.

evervevdww221··on There Have Always Existed People Who’ve Simply Wanted to Be Alone
I have the impulse to become a hermit myself, fundamentally because I'm tired of living up to other people's ideologies: going through schools and finding a job in a cubical. getting married at the right age and then raising the right amount kids, saving for their college fund and then for retirement.

but why?

I can't help but compare with my surroundings, even I have quit Facebook for many years. I can't be myself when I'm around others, but become a money maker for things I don't need. I can't concentrate on what makes me happy.

I recall what made me happy. it was when I finally understood some papers, some equations, some code. I just want to find a quiet place to do these. I hope to become an awesome painter and a guitar player too.

I just want to have enough to survive and focus my energy on these things. I don't care if I have successful kids or fancy cars.

evervevdww221··on Ask HN: Do you think career and family is either-or?
Thank you everybody for replying to my question. I guess this question is meaningless now for me, as my girlfriend has broken up with me last night and she has decided to go with another guy, fundamentally because of my hesitation for marriage.

I analyzed her too logically, weighing too much about our differences. I didn't treat her as a teammate to solve our common problems. We didn't communicate enough.

The past few hours was the darkest time of my life. Only now I realized how much I loved her. I regret it so much.

evervevdww221··on Ask HN: Do you think career and family is either-or?
I do. I wrote this based on my personal situation and my current girl friend's (potential wife). She is capable and a very good person. But her field of study isn't as money many as an engineering field.

I believe she will contribute to the family as much as she could (even not financially ). But I can't ask more than that.

She also grew up in a richer family than mine. She seems to be used to a higher life quality. I feel some pressure about it. but I have never talked with her about it for the fear for disagreement, whereas I lean toward a Minimalism, less materialized life. "live tiny, die never.", but with a family, I guess I won't have the freedom to choose my way of life.

I explicitly said "spouse doesn't work", because I want to hear from extreme examples.

evervevdww221··on Juicero Plans to Lower Prices and Cut 25% of Staff
to be honest, the Nest smart thermostat seems to me just like this juicero thing.

I don't own one, but I heard from early buyers that thing is expensively useless.

but somehow it receives less laugh and the company is still operating.

but of course, the nest company has an ambition in smart homes and iot also, not just making thermostats.

evervevdww221··on A neural network is not a model
This article is super dry. Should have defined what model is first.

It says this model vs whatever descrimination is central to ai introductory, but doesn't say why. Why does this bother the author? Why is this important? What confusion one might have if nn is claimed as a model?

Instead, it simply says "I don't think nn is a model" and goes into hideous details about RNN's hidden states. What about a fully connected nn?

evervevdww221··on Show HN: GPU-backed Linux desktops in the cloud
This looks great. great execution! What gpu do I have? how much video memory?

I knew about paperspace the day it came out of yc.

at the time, we were working on a competing product.

but we eventually gave up on the idea. because business wise, amazon is too expensive for this kind of service, making the price not economical for end users.

I don't know too much about the technical details of paperspace, but I believe we did better at resource sharing and cost management. but it was still a tough sell, even for enterprise users.
