evanjrowley··on DIY NAS: 2026 Edition
I would have chosen the i3-n305 version of that motherboard because it has In-Band ECC (IBECC) support - great for ZFS. IBECC is very underrated feature that doesn't get talked about enough. It may be available for the N150/N355, but I have never seen a confirmation.
evanjrowley··on Is there a difference between GNU and BSD Coreutils?
The one example I'm familiar with is sed and it's in-place edit option (-i). It's available in the GNU coreutils option, but not in the BSD coreutils. You can work around the lack of -i by directing sed's output back to the file.
evanjrowley··on Launching the Julia Security Working Group

GeneralMetadata.jl: JLL and Artifact Component analysis
I am glad Julia is exploring this route.

The Go ecosystem has achieved something amazing here with govulncheck[0] and I would love to see more programming languages introduce such capabilties. For those who are unaware, govulncheck provides a software component analysis (SCA) and dynamic/static applilcation security test (DAST/SAST) capability. It's directly supported by the Go project and so far I have not found this in any other ecosystem at a comparable level of integration.

Govulncheck reports known vulnerabilities that affect Go code. It uses static analysis of source code or a binary's symbol table to narrow down reports to only those that could affect the application.

By default, govulncheck makes requests to the Go vulnerability database at https://vuln.go.dev. Requests to the vulnerability database contain only module paths with vulnerabilities already known to the database, not code or other properties of your program. See https://vuln.go.dev/privacy.html for more. Use the -db flag to specify a different database, which must implement the specification at https://go.dev/security/vuln/database.
Unlike Go, Julia is an interpreted language, so their approach to this challenge will be different and worth learning from.

evanjrowley··on A Practical Introduction to Containers with Docker
I've also deployed Joplin with docker compose. I'm very pleased with that note taking app. Right now, my Joplin sync server is down due to a power outage, and I can still continue writing encrypted notes.

You can achieve something similar using Immersed https://immersed.com/

I'm excited to see how this space will evolve with the upcoming Steam Frame and it's foveated streaming feature.

evanjrowley··on Dark Mode Sucks
I learned a bit about that historical context from this long-form video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKJFC5UfmoY
evanjrowley··on Dark Mode Sucks
Indeed! I also recognize that it would be even better if more apps and websites supported this.
evanjrowley··on Dark Mode Sucks
Without taking an extreme or absolutist stance on this issue, I generally agree with the author here. Dark mode should be reserved for after sunset and before sunrise.

The eyes are adapted to see daylight levels of light during daytime. If your ambient lighting and screen don't match this, then you're not using your body in the way it's evolved to function. What we need more of are screens with anti-glare and a wide range of brightness levels.

What might have a worse impact on your eyesight is the effects of Myopia, which is being exacerbated by basically every portable device with a screen. Anyone who has the technological literacy to enable dark mode (and advocate for it) is likely someone who gets above-average screen time and is therefore someone at a higher risk of myopia.

evanjrowley··on Android and iPhone users can now share files, starting with the Pixel 10
The answer to your 2nd question might be Google's custom silicon: https://blog.google/products/pixel/tensor-g5-pixel-10/

The answer to your first question may simply be they want to sell more Pixel 10 phones.

The investment into custom silicon is more likely to pay off when new and exiting features are exclusive to the newer platform.

Is shipping with zero CVEs a marketing gimmick or was Red Hat knowingly shipping vulnerable software prior to this?
evanjrowley··on Red Alert 2 in web browser
1. The source code for Red Alert 2 is rumored to be lost a very long time ago[0], so the fact that the Chrono Divide team was able to achieve this is quite amazing.

2. The Mental Omega mod project[1] is going strong, so RA2 is still worth playing today. Hopefully it will work in this browser-based version.

evanjrowley··on Adventures in upgrading Proxmox
I can't speak for the author, but they said they have a Coral TPU passed into the LXC & container, which I also have on my Proxmox setup for Frigate NVR.

Depending on your hardware platform, there could be valid reasons why you wouldn't want to run Frigate NVR in a VM. Frigate NVR it works best when it can leverage the GPU for video transcoding and TPU for object detection. If you pass the GPU to the VM, then the Proxmox host no longer has video output (without a secondary GPU).

Unless you have an Intel Arc iGPU, Intel Arc B50/B60, or fancy server GPU, you won't have SR-IOV on your system, and that means you have to pass the entire GPU into the VM. This is a non-starter for systems where there is no extra PCIe slot for a graphics card, such as the many power-efficient Intel N100 systems that do a good job running Frigate.

The reason why you'd put Docker into LXC is that's the best supported way to get docker engine working on Proxmox without a VM. You'd want to do it on Proxmox because it brings other benefits like a familiar interface, clustering, Proxmox Backup Server, and a great community. You'd want to run Frigate NVR within Docker because it is the best supported way to run it.

At least, this was the case in Proxmox 8. I haven't checked what advancements in Proxmox 9 may have changed this.

evanjrowley··on Adventures in upgrading Proxmox
I ran into the same issue over the weekend. The end-goal for my Proxmox setup is basically the same deployment you have. It's good to see the issue was addressed quickly by the community.

Literally watching this now. 1G of RAM is impressive for a tiny device like that. I wonder how it's processing power and thermals perform under various loads including hardware crypto.

This is a question that comes up during the hiring process at my company. For a candidate to get past the initial screening, the only acceptable answer is a very long answer.
evanjrowley··on Zelenskiy says Ukraine will obtain 100 Rafale warplanes from France
I wonder if they considered SAAB's Gripen[0].

Thailand recently ordered some[1] as tensions with Cambodia have reached concerning levels[2].

Both Thailand and Ukraine need to project the image of themselves being the victim of opression. In the context of the Ukraine War, the purchase of a founding NATO member's aircraft carries a political risk. Until recently, Sweden carried a historical reputation for neutrality[3] that might have benefited Ukraine here - unless Ukraine really is a NATO/Russian proxy battleground.

evanjrowley··on You will own nothing and be (un)happy
The video game industry is plagued by this problem. With live-service games becoming commonplace, there has also been a recent trend of games being released in an incomplete state. The shocking part is that multi-million dollar "AAA" game studios are engaging in this behavior. There's also a strong "own nothing" component to the issue.

Yes, unfortunately it is.

Probably has to do with a decade of hobbyist keyboard culture centered around separate small-batch group buys where specialized switches, keycaps, and boards and maybe even stabilizers.
