evancox100··on NRC Certifies First U.S. Small Modular Reactor Design
Every fact you are saying may be true, but “fossil fuels are a bigger cause of blackouts than renewables” doesn’t follow from the facts your gave, you’re just assuming it is true. That is the last thing I will say on this.
evancox100··on NRC Certifies First U.S. Small Modular Reactor Design
Sorry but it is very misleading to say that fossil fuels sources are a bigger cause of blackouts than renewables. Without dispatchable generation, like nat gas plants but also hydroelectric, the grid would black out every single night.

Yes dispatchable generation may fail to materialize at times, but renewables “fail” to provide consistent power every single day, when the sun stops shining at night or wind stops blowing. Future battery deployments may be able to smooth these out over long enough timescales, but we are nowhere near that point right now.

evancox100··on Examples of floating point problems
Example 7 really got me, can anyone explain that? I’m not sure how “modulo” operation would be implemented in hardware, if it is a native instruction or not, but one would hope it would give a result consistent with the matching divide operation.

Edit: x87 has FPREM1 which can calculate a remainder (accurately one hopes), but I can’t find an equivalent in modern SSE or AVX. So I guess you are at the mercy of your language’s library and/or compiler? Is this a library/language bug rather than a Floating Point gotcha?

evancox100··on How to draw ugly lines fast
Thanks, I had no idea what was meant by sub-pixel, starting from section 6 of your link will explain this and show the smoothed animation.

(By sub-pixel they mean more finely determining the endpoints of the lines on an arbitrary grid finer than the output pixels — NOT physical display sub-pixels.)

evancox100··on NY Governor stalls right-to-repair bill; has until Dec 28 to avoid “pocket veto”
While it is accurate that most people vote on party basis, it is straightforwardly not the case that advertising budgets dictate campaign victories, especially in the larger, more visible races.

evancox100··on Everything SBF is doing is in singular pursuit of not going to jail
Maybe those predictions simply weren't as credible as you thought?

Federal wire fraud (and conspiracy to commit the same) has a maximum sentence length of 20 years. I guess she could have gotten 80 years if all 4 convictions were ordered to be served consecutively. I don't know how common consecutive senteces are vs concurrent.

In federal prison you can only parole at a maximum the last 15% of sentence, so she well serve the majority of the time (if held up on appeal etc., etc.)

evancox100··on Optimizing compilers reload vector constants needlessly
This may be true for scalar code but it seems like the compilers still aren’t quite there with vector code.
evancox100··on ‘We kind of lost track’: how SBF blurred lines between FTX and Alameda
> If it never existed, then FTX was operating more like a bank - dollars only work because they have a paper trail and we can keep printing new ones. Try cashing out your savings, you might be able to. Now try everyone cashing out - there is no money for it.

Of course there is money in a bank run on an otherwise solvent bank. The Fed steps in and either lends the money in exchange for its pound of flesh, or takes over and makes depositors whole, up to the FDIC limits.

The fact that the Fed CAN do this, combined with bank regulations such as reserve requirements, is why it doesn’t need to do this very often.

Banks are explicit that they borrow short and lend long. It’s not that the money isn’t there, it’s just a mismatch in liquidity/duration. For FTX, the assets themselves were bad, never mind the liquidity.

You get an additional clue that there are no “kickers” on the board. Quoting from the the help:

“No random kickers on the board - The rank of each board card will alway be a part of at least one player's hand in at least one phase. Note: "part of a hand" means the significant card(s) in: Pair, Two Pair, Three of a Kind or Four of a Kind (not kickers) TLDR: You may have to guess a card's suit with no clues, but not it's rank”

Transient inflation means the $4 / gallon milk prices stick around and don’t go any higher. Going back down to $2 would be deflation.

evancox100··on 12,000 Facebook employees, 15% of its workforce, may lose jobs amid quiet layoff
I don’t get why people keep saying this, it’s like they want companies to pay employees less. No one goes around saying “Investment Banking, now that’s a bubble, no way they can keep paying their employees that much!” (Goldman Sachs revenue / employee over $1.1 million) Presumably the person commenting on HN is in fact an employee and not like Mark Zuckerberg in disguise, though I guess it would make more sense if the people saying this were startup founders angry at having to compete for talent a FAANG wage levels.

evancox100··on Google’s “million’s of search results” are not being served
It makes sense if you separate the indexing process from the result ranking/retrieval process. Building up the index it has encountered the word “dog” millions (billions?) of times, but the Google search API’s job is NOT to operate as a catalogue that will list every single web page on the internet with the word “dog”. Instead its job is to show you what it thinks are the most relevant dog results.

That said I think this could be communicated more clearly when you get to the end of the results. The fact that the results number _changes_ is an own goal that makes it seem like they have something to hide. Instead it should just say “Google Search shows a selection of the most relevant occurrences of your search term. If you didn’t find what you need, try XYZ.”
