oh, spoiler.
euroderf··on The Feeling of Power (Asimov, 1958)
In the Lynch version the mentat Thufir has a short rap where he is getting the house's defensive systems in order. Cool stuff.

very OT: lately I'm seeing "wreaked" a lot but what about "wrought".
euroderf··on New EU-wide product repair rules come into force
For "fix" substitute "assemble": there's the Ikea model.
euroderf··on A Syncthing and SQLite Gotcha
Shouldn't this return errors to the "other processes [that] had open file descriptors pointing to new" ?

When this system of classification is mapped to politics, does anything actionable emerge ?
euroderf··on Coconut oil jet fuel matches kerosene's efficiency in engine tests
Hey Alexa, change all paperclip production to coconut production.
euroderf··on Fable and the end of the free lunch
You make it sound like the DNC.
euroderf··on New EU-wide product repair rules come into force
When did it become socially acceptable to throw things out rather than repair them ? When did it become economically rational ?

Helsinki (for one) needs some real repair cafés.

euroderf··on What Happens When the Cost of Intelligence Drops 100x
You suggest that the market segment for frontier models is necessarily shrinking. But what if it's just a failure of imagination on the part of users ?

Shirt folding is piker stuff. The acid test (imho) will be to cleanse a bathroom & shower (or tub) top to bottom. Sparkling and provably sterile. Special treatment for mold on fixtures and walls, and for leftover body stuff (blood, mucus, fungus, what have you).

Just wait. An A.I. will devise a formula for a real grey goo.

euroderf··on America's Colleges Are Hurtling Toward an Enrollment Cliff
If this supply of high-value jobs still needs to meet demand, that is a pretty severe constraint on the supply.
euroderf··on The University as We Know It Is Finished
I like the emphasis on the development of the individual as a mentally co-ordinated cognitive whole.

Carbon-based lifeforms gotta give the silicon-based a run for their money.

euroderf··on Could AIs Become Conscious?
I suspect that the nervous system acts as a distributed antenna for "picking up" other antennas.
euroderf··on Could AIs Become Conscious?
I for one believe consciousness will not happen without qualia,
euroderf··on Where Human Sleep Went Wrong
Not jesting! And, point taken. But it made me wonder. It was intentional (within the limits of intentionality for an infant) and repeated.

I always liked his observation that Disneyland was created in order to make the rest of America seem real.
euroderf··on We've flown a radiation-blocking vest to the Moon and back, and it worked
I remember reading about the Belts in the early 60s (IIRC). It most definitely spooked me. How will men (erm humans) ever get thru the Belts safely ? But then they disappeared from any and all discussions of spaceflight.
euroderf··on Where Human Sleep Went Wrong
My boy when very young (just months) went thru a phase where in the middle of the night he would suddenly sit bolt upright, swivel his head to scan the room, and then conk out again. This was not caused by noises.

I found this reassuring and slightly amazing, that he is wired to do his part as a nighttime lookout.

Analysis, analyses. Basis, bases. Many more.
euroderf··on That Disgraceful, Disreputable, (Wonderful) Form of Punctuation: The Parenthesis
> Endnotes maximize disruption, the reader has to turn to the back of the book to find the end note, then return to what they were originally reading.

This is why Tufte-style margin notes are so nice. It is effortless to scan them and choice to read or skip. I wish more blogging software included it as a sort of standard styling option.

euroderf··on Tiny satellite will use the dark side of the Moon as a shield
I remember mentions of mascons during the Apollo missions. They were at the time a bit mysterious but their existence and influence were known.
euroderf··on How does IKEA come up with names for its products?
The wordless instructions are generally great, except in the occasional instance where there's a confusing panel or two.

Has anyone ever seen an academic analysis of the visual "language" used ? Or even any articles about it, serious or humorous ?
